Iran's Khamenei claims victory in first speech since Israel ceasefire

Euronews4 hours ago

Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said his country emerged victorious over Israel and 'delivered a slap to America's face' on Thursday.
The speech in a video broadcast marked Khamenei's first public comments since a US-brokered ceasefire was declared between the two countries following 12 days of conflict.
He told viewers that Washington had only intervened in the fighting because 'it felt that if it did not intervene, the (Israeli) regime would be utterly destroyed.'
Khamenei said that the US 'achieved no gains from this war."
'The Islamic Republic was victorious and, in retaliation, delivered a slap to America's face,' he said, in apparent reference to an Iranian missile attack on a US base in Qatar on Monday, which caused no casualties.

Iran-Israel: French PM Bayrou acknowledges a 'shift' to a world where 'force prevails'

The joke was easy, but fitting. "The government is leaking!" several opposition MPs said, as water dripped from the ceiling of the Assemblée Nationale following heavy rains in Paris. Prime Minister François Bayrou, speaking on the situation in the Middle East, pointed out the leak at the end of his address on Wednesday evening, June 25. A few drops landed on the prime minister's lectern, forcing a 20-minute pause while firefighters laid down absorbent mats. Aside from the storm outside, the evening at the Palais Bourbon – which stretched until 1 am – was relatively calm. It was to be expected that this debate, held on a Wednesday evening without a vote and focused on international issues, would attract only a few MPs, many of whom trickled out as the night – and the weather – wore on. Each speaker took the floor to present their own take on the global situation. Before the water started falling on his head, Bayrou opened the session with a 30-minute speech flanked by Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu and Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. The prime minister laid out the broader context of ongoing conflicts, with a cease-fire having taken effect Tuesday between Iran and Israel after 12 days of war and US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Netanyahu asks court to postpone corruption trial summons: lawyer

In a filing to the tribunal, Netanyahu's lawyer Amit Hadad said the premier's testimony should be delayed in light of "regional and global developments". "The court is respectfully requested to order the cancellation of the hearings in which the prime minister was scheduled to testify in the coming two weeks," the filing said. It said Netanyahu was "compelled to devote all his time and energy to managing national, diplomatic and security issues of the utmost importance" following a brief conflict with Iran and during ongoing fighting in Gaza where Israeli hostages are held. Trump on Wednesday described the case against Netanyahu as a "witch hunt". In a message on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the Netanyahu trial "should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero", after the end of a 12-day war with Iran. Netanyahu on Thursday thanked Trump for his "heartfelt support for me and your incredible support for Israel and the Jewish people". "I look forward to continue working with you to defeat our common enemies, liberate our hostages and quickly expand the circle of peace," Netanyahu wrote on X, sharing a copy of Trump's Truth Social post. Israel's opposition leader warned Trump against interfering in Israel's internal affairs. "We are thankful to President Trump, but... the president should not interfere in a judicial trial in an independent country," Yair Lapid said in an interview with news website Ynet. Netanyahu is Israel's longest-serving prime minister. In the trial that has been delayed many times since it began in May 2020, Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing. In a first case, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than $260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewellery and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favours. In two other cases, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favourable coverage in two Israeli media outlets.

'Trump is eager to forge peace in the Middle East,' Palestinian FM says

Speaking from Ramallah in the West Bank, the Palestinian foreign minister called for the rescheduling of a UN conference on Palestinian statehood, co-sponsored by Saudi Arabia and France, which was postponed earlier this month due to the Israel-Iran conflict. Aghabekian said she hoped the conference could take place "within the coming weeks". The top Palestinian diplomat emphasised that "the two-state solution remains the most viable solution" despite the Israeli Knesset 's overwhelming vote against it. She argued that other alternatives – a one-state solution, maintaining the status quo or an " apartheid state" – are much less viable.
