Wild video shows speedboat flying in the air at 200 mph during attempt to break speed record

New York Post28-04-2025
Astonishing video captures a speedboat flying into the air at more than 200mph during a doomed attempt to break a speed record — then flipping over multiple times before slamming into a Nevada lake.
The speedboat's drivers — using the pseudonyms John Wayne and Clint Eastwood — were attempting to break the record of 206mph at Saturday's 2025 Desert Storm Shootout boating event when their Skater 388 was filmed suddenly taking flight on Lake Havasu.
The boat suddenly flew straight up in the air, slamming back down into the water after flipping several times in front of horrified onlookers, now-viral video shared by Speedboat Magazine shows.

Miraculously, both drivers walked away from the crash with minor injuries.
'They came to Lake Havasu earlier in the week intending to break the record here for the desert storm shootout,' Lee said. 'That was their first pass of the day and when they went over, the radar picked them up at 200.1 mph.'
They are racers with Freedom One Racing based out of Kansas City, Missouri, and were using the names of Hollywood action heroes Wayne and Eastwood to protect their real identities.

Fellow competitor Jeff Clark told FOX10 that the 'horrendous' crash was spine chilling to watch.

5 Experts believe windy conditions may have led to the crash.

'My heart dropped when I saw that boat get airborne. It's never something you want to look at when you're out having fun as a driver for sure,' he said.
It's thought that windy conditions on the lake on Saturday may have led to the crash — but ironically may have saved the lives of those onboard.
'Best case scenario, because of the wind, when the boat cut it, it held it up there longer than had there not been such substantial wind,' Lee said.
Clark also praised the design of the boat for saving the men. 'Those guys are alive for one reason and one reason only. That boat was built not to come apart,' he said.
'I tip my hat to … the crew that built that boat because it saved that guy's life, it saved both of their lives, there's no doubt about it.'
Lake Havasu has seen 11 fatal racing crashes since 1963, according to Motorsport Memorial.
The deadliest was in 2018 when three people were killed after a crash involving a boat called the 'Lickety Split.'

ESPN will not air Spike Lee's docuseries on Colin Kaepernick, citing 'creative differences'

Director Spike Lee's multi-part documentary series for ESPN Films about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a national debate when he protested racial injustice nearly a decade ago, will not be released, the filmmaker and ESPN said. "ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences," ESPN said in a statement to Reuters on Saturday. "Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film." Lee told Reuters on Friday that the series was not going to be released. "It's not coming out. That's all I can say," Lee said on the red carpet ahead of the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation dinner, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, in Beverly Hills, California. Asked why, the Oscar-winning director declined to elaborate, citing a nondisclosure agreement. "I can't. I signed a nondisclosure. I can't talk about it." Kaepernick played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2016. He ignited a national debate in 2016 when he knelt during the U.S. national anthem to protest systemic racism and police brutality. The 37-year-old athlete has not played in the NFL since that season. Many experts believed his political activism, which triggered a movement that drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, was the key reason teams were wary of signing him. He later filed a collusion grievance against team owners, which was settled with the league in 2019. A representative for Kaepernick said the player had no comment about the docuseries on Saturday. Production on the series began in 2022, with Walt Disney-owned ESPN touting it as a "full, first-person account" of Kaepernick's journey that would feature extensive interviews with the player. In September, Puck News reported the project faced delays amid disagreements between Kaepernick and Lee over the direction of the film, and that ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro was open to allowing the filmmakers to shop it elsewhere.

Denzel Washington reveals 2 reasons it was time for a Spike Lee reunion

There's been a mix-up. HIGHEST 2 LOWEST in select theaters tomorrow, streaming September 5 on Apple TV+ It has been 19 years since actor Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee had collaborated on Inside Man in 2006. The heist thriller was the fourth project the duo worked on together -- He Got Game (1998), Malcolm X (1992) and Mo' Better Blues (1990) being the others -- and Lee was one of the handful of directors that the Oscar-winner had worked with multiple times. With Highest 2 Lowest debuting in theaters this week, the pair has reunited for a fifth time. The thrilling drama, which also stars Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, Wendell Pierce and Aubrey Joseph, is a reimagining of the Akira Kurosawa classic High And Low (1963). Record label guru David King (Washington) must weigh his personal and professional morals as he internally battles with what to do after the son of his driver (Wright) gets mistakenly taken in a botched kidnapping where King's son was the actual target. Should he still pay the ransom? What responsibility does he have in this situation? For Washington, now was the right time to reconnect with Lee for two reasons. "It was a New York script, New York story," Washington told For The Win in a recent interview. "The script came to me before Spike [Lee]. He's a New York guy. I'm a New York guy." The second reason was very simple. "Trust," Washington stated before referring to the two other directors he has also worked with a career-high five times. "I trust Antoine Fuqua. I trust Spike and obviously, Tony Scott, God rest his soul." New York City was very much at the soul of this movie, taking place predominantly in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Sweeping establishing shots show Lee's undying love for The City That Never Sleeps. There are multiple Yankee Stadium references and Yankee fans (shoutout to Nicholas Turturro), and the great pianist and Latin musician Eddie Palmieri -- who sadly passed last week -- and his Salsa Orchestra are prominently featured. "It was such a no-brainer for me to call Spike, because it's a New York story. And needless to say, I think he kind of likes New York," Washington added with a laugh. "If the story took place in Kansas City, I might have called somebody else." Despite a slow start, which the story almost necessitates with all the build up, Highest 2 Lowest thrives when the audience gets to see Washington do what he does best. He has been doing this since 1977, and it is truly still a delight just to be able to watch him on screen. Paired with Wright -- and a really fantastic A$AP Rocky -- it's a recipe for success. Highest 2 Lowest, an A24 and Apple Original Films production, is in theaters on August 15.
