City confirms no plans for Texas National Guard in Lubbock ahead of 'No Kings Day' protests
According to Democrats for Texas, the protest will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at the Tim Cole Memorial and is being organized by the Lubbock County Democratic Party, ACT, Texas Democratic Women, Texas Coalition of Black Democrats, and Democrats for Texas at Texas Tech University.

'The demonstration will serve as an opportunity for the public to express their dissatisfaction with the current administration and will focus on issues such as the overreach of DOGE, poor handling of foreign affairs, and general egregious conduct by the president,' reads a statement from the organization. 'All are welcome to attend and encouraged to bring signs to demonstrate their grievance.'
Several cities across Texas, such as Austin and San Antonio, will also see a protest in their city on Saturday, which has prompted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to activate the Texas National Guard and additional Texas Department of Public Safety personnel.
In a June 12 statement from the governor's office, Abbott said he respects everyone's Texas and U.S. constitutional right to peacefully protest; however, he will not tolerate unruly protests that damage private property or threaten people's safety.
'Today, I deployed over 2,000 Texas DPS troopers and over 5,000 Texas National Guard soldiers across the state to assist local law enforcement response to these protests and to maintain law and order,' said Abbott. 'Anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be arrested and held accountable to the full extent of the law. Don't mess with Texas — and don't mess with Texas law enforcement.'

The Avalanche-Journal reached out to both the City of Lubbock and the Lubbock Police Department to see if they were made aware that any of the announced resources are heading to Lubbock.
Both said that no state resources are being sent to Lubbock at this time.
'The City and Lubbock Police Departments are aware of planned gatherings this weekend. Though we expect them to be peaceful, we are prepared should an issue arise,' reads a statement from the city.

She spent Monday night and Tuesday on the House floor, where she set up a livestream while her Democratic colleagues outside had plainclothes officers following them to their offices and homes. Republicans issued civil arrest warrants to bring the Democrats back after they left the state Aug. 3, and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott asked the state Supreme Court to oust Wu and several other Democrats from office. The lawmakers also face a fine of $500 for every day they were absent. How officers shadowed Democratic lawmakers Democrats reported different levels of monitoring. Houston Rep. Armando Walle said he wasn't sure where his police escort was, but there was still a heightened police presence in the Capitol, so he felt he was being monitored closely. Some Democrats said the officers watching them were friendly. But Austin Rep. Sheryl Cole said in a social media post that when she went on her morning walk Tuesday, the officer following her lost her on the trail, got angry and threatened to arrest her. The Latest: Texas GOP poised to approve map gerrymandered for their advantage
The first domino in a growing national redistricting battle is likely to fall Wednesday as the Republican-controlled Texas legislature is expected to pass a new congressional map creating five new winnable seats for the GOP. The vote follows prodding by President Donald Trump to stave off a midterm defeat that would deprive his party of control of the House of Representatives. Democrats who refused round-the-clock police escorts to ensure they'd provide a quorum were confined to the House floor, where they protested on a livestream. They've vowed a blue-states payback for the Texas map, with California's legislature poised to approve a retaliatory gerrymandering for the state's voters to consider in November. Evacuating for a hurricane could expose immigrants to deportation Natural disasters have long posed singular risks for people without permanent legal status. But with the arrival of peak Atlantic hurricane season, immigrants and their advocates say Trump's militaristic immigration enforcement agenda has increased the danger. Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine's energy sector this week. One attack sparked fires at an oil depot belonging to Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR, while another damaged a gas transport facility in the central region of Poltava. Russia has regularly attacked oil depots and fuel storage facilities since the first days of the full-scale invasion it launched in February 2022. The Energy Ministry said Ukrainian energy facilities had been attacked 2,900 times since March 2025 alone.
