Warner Bros. Gives Up on ‘Akira' Remake, But Hollywood Won't
Well, it's happened. After 20 years of shuffling creative teams and development hell, Warner Bros. finally called it and won't remake Akira.
But things aren't ending there, according to the Hollywood Reporter. WB's simply let go of the movie rights it acquired back in 2002. They've now returned to the manga's publisher, Kodansha; according to THR, several producers and talents are already 'lining up' for the chance to adapt it. No specific people were listed, ditto studios or streamers, but you can imagine all the big ones want it.
WB's been threatening to do an Akira remake directed or written by either Stephen Norrington, Garry Whitta, Jaume Collet-Serra, or others. One of the more recent names thrown out there was Taika Waititi to direct and co-write in 2017, and it was even meant to release in May 2021. But after Waititi was locked in for Thor: Love & Thunder and other projects, the remake got pulled from the release schedule. Since then, there's been no word on it.
Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw before it, Akira now has a chance at a real future on the big screen. The question now is, who'll be the one to bring it to the masses, and how will that film change the source for a new audience that probably only knows it because of the endlessly replicated slide?
While waiting to see how that shakes out, there's the in-development Akira anime series from Gundam studio Sunrise, assuming that ever leaves development hell.

Beyoncé powers through scary car malfunction during "Cowboy Carter" concert in Houston
Beyoncé powered through a scary technical malfunction at her first of two "Cowboy Carter" tour shows in her hometown of Houston on Saturday night. The 43-year-old singer was performing her song "16 Carriages" in a suspended red car when the vehicle started to tilt in the air, according to video from the scary moment shared by fans on social media. A publicist for the singer told CBS News in a statement that a "technical mishap caused the flying car, a prop Beyonce uses to circle the stadium and see her fans up close, to tilt." "She was quickly lowered and no one was injured. The show continued without incident," the statement continued. The cause of the malfunction was not immediately clear. While she hasn't directly commented on the incident, Beyoncé shared a photo on Instagram. "I love you, Houston," she captioned the post, which included several other photos from the show The "Cowboy Carter" stop in Houston comes after Beyoncé finished the international leg of her tour, which included six nights in London and three nights in Paris.

'F1' opens with $55 million, delivering Apple its biggest big-screen hit
NEW YORK (AP) — Apple has its first box-office hit. 'F1 The Movie' debuted with $55.6 million in North American theaters and $144 million globally over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, handing the tech company easily its biggest opening yet. Though Apple Original Films has had some notable successes in its six years in Hollywood — including the 2021 Oscar-winner 'CODA' — its theatrical results have been decidedly mixed. Misfires like 'Argylle' and 'Fly Me to the Moon' and big-budget awards plays like Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon' and Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' have been better at driving viewers to Apple TV+ than movie theaters. But 'F1' was Apple's first foray into summer blockbuster territory. It won a bidding war for the project from much of the production team behind the 2022 box-office smash 'Top Gun: Maverick.' Apple then partnered with Warner Bros. to distributed the film starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris and Kerry Condon. With a production budget over $200 million, 'F1' still has several laps to go to turn a profit. But for now, 'F1' is full speed ahead. ''F1 The Movie' puts the pedal to the metal in an impressive overperformance for this original summer movie that had one of the most comprehensive and exciting marketing blitzes in recent memory and it paid off big for the film,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore. Car racing movies have often struggled in theaters; crash-and-burn cases include Ron Howard's 'Rush' (2013) and Michael Mann's 'Ferrari' (2023). But 'F1' built off of the Formula 1 fandom stirred up by the popular series 'Formula 1: Drive to Survive.' And it leaned on 'Top Gun: Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to deliver another adult-oriented action thrill ride. Like they did in 'Top Gun: Maverick,' the filmmakers sought an adrenaline rush by placing IMAX cameras inside the cockpit in 'F1.' IMAX and large-format screens accounted for 55% of in its ticket sales. IMAX, whose screens are much sought-after in the summer, has carved out a three-week run for the movie. Reviews have been very good for 'F1' and audience reaction (an 'A' via CinemaScore) was even better. That suggests 'F1' could hold up well in the coming weeks despite some formidable coming competition in Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World Rebirth.' Universal's 'M3gan 2.0' had been expected to pose a greater challenge to 'F1.' Instead, the robot doll sequel didn't come close to matching the 2022 original's box-office launch. 'M3gan 2.0' collected $10.2 million in 3,112 theaters. Memes and viral videos helped propel the first 'M3gan' to a $30.4 million opening and a total haul of $180 million, all on a $12 million budget. Still, the Blumhouse Productions horror thriller could wind up profitable. The film, written and directed by Gerald Johnstone, cost a modest $25 million to make. A spinoff titled 'Soulm8te' is scheduled for release next year. M3gan 2.0' ended up in fourth place. The box-office leader of the last two weekends, 'How to Train Your Dragon,' slid to second with $19.4 million. The DreamWorks Animation live-action hit from Universal Pictures has surpassed $200 million domestically in three weeks. After a debut that marked a new low for Pixar , the studio's 'Elio' gathered up $10.7 million in sales in its second weekend. A new Miss SC teen has been crowned. Here's who won
The new Miss South Carolina's Teen is a graduate of Porter-Gaud High School in Charleston and will study psychology at Furman University in the fall. Crowned at Township Auditorium Friday night, Tess Ferm, 18, aspires to become a child life specialist. Her community service Initiative is to increase awareness of food allergies, which she has, along with her brother. 'We ate meals at home to avoid cross-contamination reactions, so I developed my love of cooking from watching my dad prepare meals,' she said in her biography for the competition. She also said she does a 'somewhat convincing Jennifer Coolidge impression.' As her talent, she sang 'Tomorrow' from 'Annie and has had leading roles in high school presentations including, Sandy in 'Grease' and Sophie in 'Mamma Mia.' She is also the founder of the Kindness Counts Club at her school. On her bucket list for the next five years are to visit a Buddhist Monastery, become a motion capture actor and to perfect walking backwards for giving college tours. She won a $12,500 college scholarship and will compete in the Miss America Teen competition. First runner up was Greer High School's Teen Lilykate Barbare, second was Columbia's Teen Logan Gabrielle Wells, third Greenville County's Teen Madison Harbin and fourth runner up was Greenwood's Teen Cleo Floyd-Johnstone. The other finalists were Clover High School's Teen Paris Dellinger, Dutch Fork's Teen Ava Sain, Newberry's Teen Gracie Arnold, Summerville's Teen Lola Gantt, Union County Fair's Teen Zahmariya Littlejohn and Upstate's Teen Katelynn Ochterbeck.
