Android And iPhone SMS Attacks No Longer Need Your Phone Number

Forbes8 hours ago

Hackers are deploying SMS Blaster hardware in attacks against smartphones, police have warned.
Most malware security threats are operating system-specific, meaning it is relatively uncommon to see such a cybersecurity warning that applies equally to Android and iPhone users. Sure, it happens, as in the case of the photo-stealing malware I reported on recently. When the entire smartphone universe is wrapped up in a threat warning, however, it's more likely than not going to involve phishing and SMS text messages. With the FBI urging people not to click on SMS links, users are already on red alert. But now, police in the U.K. have warned, hackers have been found deploying something called an SMS Blaster which lets them send malicious SMS texts to any smartphone in the vicinity, without any need to know the phone numbers of the devices being attacked.
The Android And iPhone SMS Blaster Threat
Earlier this year, I wrote about a large-scale SMS attack campaign targeting both Android and iPhone users, which went into some detail about how the threat actors were employing what is known as a smartphone farm to send the malicious text messages. These operations, involving hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of mobile device emulators running in parallel on a single machine, each dedicated to a specific scam campaign, are limited by the fact that they are anchored to a location and require knowledge of the telephone numbers to send the messages to. As seems appropriate in the mobile threat sector, the threat actors themselves are now able to attack while on the move. Quite literally, in fact.
A man, arrested by the police's Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit in the U.K. and sentenced this week to a year in prison, was found to be using hardware known as an SMS Blaster from the boot of his car while driving around London. Similar incidents have been reported globally, so this is far from being a U.K. only problem.
The SMS Blaster operates as an unlawful cellphone mast by getting smartphones in the vicinity to connect to it, instead of the genuine mast, by seemingly having a stronger signal, albeit using a 2G network. Not only does this mean that the attacker does not need to know the phone numbers of the devices being targeted, but the resulting malicious SMS messages can also evade phone networks' anti-spam and security measures. The messages were nothing out of the ordinary in this case, a simple tax refund scam baiting the reader to click on a link. We know this as one of the arresting police officers received just such a message from the man as they approached him.
Android users are advised to disable 2G, while iPhone users should filter messages from unknown contacts. If you receive any kind of suspicious SMS message, you can forward it to 7726, whether you are in the U.K. or the U.S., to report it to your mobile carrier.

Elon Musk reportedly fires Tesla's top sales exec

Omead Afshar, Tesla's vice president in charge of sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe, has reportedly been fired by CEO Elon Musk, according to Forbes. It's not immediately known why Musk fired Afshar, who was one of his top lieutenants and closest confidants at the company. Afshar, Musk, and Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. Afshar's departure was first reported by Bloomberg News. Afshar was posting support for the limited rollout of Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, as recently as Tuesday. 'Absolutely historic day for Tesla,' he wrote on June 23 on X, the social media platform his former boss owns. 'Thank you, Elon, for pushing us all!' Afshar's departure comes at a time when the company's sales growth has vanished. Tesla sold fewer cars in 2024 than it did in 2023, the first annual drop since it started mass producing EVs more than a decade ago. Musk's involvement in U.S. politics has not helped, despite his recent pledge that he was leaving the Trump administration. Sales continued to struggle through the first half of 2025. The company's industry-leading profits fell 71% year-over-year in the first quarter. European sales fell nearly 28% percent year-over-year in May. Tesla will report global delivery figures for the second quarter next week, and financial results for the period in mid-July. Afshar was not a particularly public-facing executive at Tesla. He joined the company in 2017 and spent years working in the 'office of the CEO.' He took on increasing responsibilities ever since; Musk has previously credited Afshar with leading the construction of Tesla's massive factory in Austin, Texas. Not long after that, though, Afshar found himself in hot water. In 2022 he became a subject of an internal probe after he was allegedly involved in a plan to purchase special material for a glass building Musk reportedly wanted. Both the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission began investigating those purchases in 2023. Techcrunch event Save $200+ on your TechCrunch All Stage pass Build smarter. Musk elevated him to the role of vice president in late 2024 after another top executive, Tom Zhu, moved back to China. Bloomberg News also reported Thursday that Tesla's director of HR for North America, Jenna Ferrua, is no longer with the company. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams adviser Winnie Greco back in action, helping drive turnout for campaign kickoff

NEW YORK — Two controversial allies of New York Eric Mayor Adams with ties to the Chinese government helped drive turnout for his Thursday reelection campaign kickoff rally, according to sources familiar with the matter. In the days leading up to the rally, Winnie Greco, an ex-senior adviser to Adams whose homes were raided by the FBI last year, worked the phones and took other steps to get people to show up for the event, the sources said. Robin Mui, an Adams donor and CEO of Chinese language newspaper Sing Tao, worked with Greco on that effort, the sources told the Daily News. Adams campaign spokesman Todd Shapiro said they aren't formally involved in the campaign and suggested people volunteer their services for all types of events. Mui, who's a registered agent of the Chinese government, and Greco didn't immediately return calls and texts. The rally was set to be held on the steps of City Hall around noon, and Adams' team says it 's expected to draw hundreds of supporters. It marks the first major campaign event Adams has held since President Donald Trump's Department of Justice in April secured a controversial dismissal of the mayor's corruption indictment, which alleged he took bribes and illegal campaign cash from Turkish government operatives. The dismissal has led many to believe Adams is beholden to Trump's agenda, an accusation the mayor denies. Greco resigned as a City Hall adviser to Adams after FBI agents in February 2024 raided her two Bronx homes as part of an investigation that has reportedly focused at least in part on her connections to China's government. A longtime fundraiser for Adams, Greco' met regularly with Chinese government Party officials while still at City Hall. The probe into Greco has produced no charges and it's unclear whether the inquiry is continuing. Greco's involvement in Thursday's rally comes after she appeared earlier this week with Adams for a ribbon-cutting event at a hookah lounge in Queens, the first time in months she was spotted publicly with him at an official government event. Mui has been a donor to Adams' political efforts going back to his time as Brooklyn borough president. Mui was forced by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2021 to register himself and his newspaper as agents of China's government. The DOJ made that call after determining they were engaged in 'political activity' on China's behalf. Mui has maintained he isn't a Chinese agent. Still, he has filed disclosures with the DOJ, as required under federal law, detailing his work activities. Last year, The News reported Mui had failed to report to the DOJ that he met in an official capacity in 2022 with Greco and Ingrid Lewis-Martin, Adams' then-chief adviser who has since been indicted on unrelated corruption charges.

US, French authorities confirm arrest of BreachForums hackers

U.S. and French authorities have confirmed the arrests of five hackers accused of being behind several major hacks and being part of a notorious cybercrime forum. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment of British national Kai West, 25, accusing him of being 'a serial hacker' known as IntelBroker. U.S. authorities allege West is behind 'a years-long hacking scheme,' which caused more than $25 million in damages by targeting more than 40 victims, including a telecoms company, a municipal healthcare provider, and an Internet service provider. In the case of the healthcare provider, the DOJ alleges West tried to sell sensitive patient's personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, genders, health plan and employer information. Per the DOJ, West was the leader of a hacking group known as 'CyberN[——]', referring to a racist slur, which frequented 'a particular internet forum.' While the DOJ did not name the forum, the complaint includes details that reference BreachForums, which was previously shut down by a coalition of international law enforcement agencies in 2023 and 2024. The DOJ press release said West was arrested in France earlier in February and is now facing extradition to the United States. According to the complaint against West, the CyberN[——] group included four other individuals whom U.S. authorities have not named. Those four individuals appear to have been arrested in France earlier this week. Techcrunch event Save $200+ on your TechCrunch All Stage pass Build smarter. Scale faster. Connect deeper. Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW On Wednesday, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in a statement that French police arrested four people suspected of running BreachForums, and of being part of a collective called 'ShinyHunters.' 'This week's arrests targeted the individuals suspected of being the site's main administrators, and raised hopes of its permanent closure,' said Beccuau, according to a translation of the press release. The prosecutor also confirmed West, only named in the statement as IntelBroker, had been arrested in France in February, which aligns with what U.S. authorities announced on Thursday. When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the French prosecutor's office referred TechCrunch to its published statement. In response to a question about the four unnamed co-conspirators, U.S. Justice Department spokesperson Nicholas Biase said he couldn't comment on 'uncharged individuals,' and declined to clarify in a follow-up email. BreachForums was one of the most well-known hacking forums on the internet, where cybercriminals sold hacking tools, as well as advertised, sold, and traded data stolen from companies, such as 23andMe, and many others. In 2023, U.S. federal authorities seized and shut down BreachForums, three months after arresting its administrator, Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, also known as 'Pompompurin.' The site then re-launched, but it was seized and shut down again in 2024. West is charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, accessing a protected computer to obtain information, and wire fraud.
