New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Globally, central bank gold buying experienced a slowdown in April, according to the latest data from the World Gold Council (WGC). The WGC indicates that central banks added a net of 12 tonnes to their reserves during the month. This figure represents a 12% decrease compared to the previous month's purchases and falls below the 12-month average of 28 tonnes. This deceleration in net purchases marks the second consecutive month where the rate of accumulation has slowed. Analysts suggest that this trend could be partly attributed to the significant appreciation in the price of gold observed since the beginning of the year, with gold reaching multiple record highs in recent months. While WGC 'still expect overall buying to continue, given that the economic and geopolitical outlook remains highly uncertain.'The World Gold Council's report highlights that the National Bank of Poland continued to be a significant player in the market, remaining the leading buyer both in April and for the year-to-date. Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India left its gold reserves unchanged at 880t and provided an update on its gold storage arrangements. On the other hand, several African central banks are exploring the possibility of increasing their gold holdings. The bank of Namibia, at the start of May, have announced plans to add gold with the aim of increasing it to 3% of total reserves.Similarly, the National Bank of Rwanda also announced during the month that it intends to build gold reserves.Gold retreated on Tuesday after approaching a four-week peak earlier in the day, pressured by a modest dollar recovery and profit-taking, as investors stayed wary amid unpredictable U.S. trade policies. On the physical demand side, according to a report by ICRA, domestic gold jewellery consumption in India is projected to expand by a significant 12-14 per cent in value terms in fiscal year 2026. Silver streak sharpens: Metal hits 13-year high on weaker dollar; experts see more upside amid global churn

Silver prices surged past $35 per an ounce on Thursday, buoyed by currency weakness, industrial appetite and safe-haven flows, with analysts suggesting the rally may not be over yet. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Silver prices crossed the $35 mark per ounce and hit their highest level since March 2012, lifted by a mix of factors including a weaker US dollar, geopolitical tensions and robust industrial demand, according to experts quoted by ANI. "With the trust in dollar decreasing, silver appears to be a good avenue for money to move to, and the gold-silver ratio was recently above 1.10, so the only way forward was either silver prices rise or gold prices fall. And that's what has happened — silver has risen far more than gold," said Mrinesh Jain, Director, Bombay Bullion Metal Hub LLP. The gold-silver ratio, which shows how many ounces of silver are equivalent to one ounce of gold, is often used to analyse future market trends based on historical relationships between the two metals. The dollar weakened across the board after US private payroll data came in below expectations, signalling further softening in the labour market. In addition, data showed the US services sector contracted for the first time in about a year during May. Silver generally moves in the opposite direction of the US dollar. When the dollar weakens, silver prices tend to rise — and when it strengthens, silver often falls. In addition to its monetary appeal, silver plays a vital role in industrial applications. It is used in electronics, solar panels, electric vehicles, medical devices, water purification, catalysts, mirrors and semiconductors, owing to its superior electrical, thermal and antibacterial properties. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The recent rise in demand for clean energy and advanced technologies has further driven interest in the metal, extending its appeal beyond traditional segments such as jewellery and coinage. Silver is also known to benefit from safe-haven demand during periods of economic or geopolitical volatility, much like gold. On the geopolitical front, a notable development came as US President Donald J. Trump announced a visa ban for international students planning to begin studies at Harvard University. He also signed an executive order restricting travel to the US from 19 countries, citing national security risks, according to the White House. "While silver is well-positioned to test further highs — possibly reaching Rs 1,30,000 per kilogram later this year," said Ajay Kedia, Director at Kedia Commodities, Mumbai. "Silver continues to reflect the dual narrative of a monetary hedge and an industrial growth story," he added.

RBI's MPC to keep its focus on growth momentum; 25 bps rate cut likely: CareEdge Ratings

New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is expected to maintain its focus on supporting the ongoing recovery in economic growth momentum, Careedge Ratings said in a report. The data intelligence firm added in the report that the rate-cut cycle that began in February is likely to continue, with a further 25-bps reduction in the repo rate expected at the June meeting, while retaining an 'accommodative stance'. 'The healthy growth momentum and the already easing money market rates may prompt the RBI to take incremental steps in policy easing, reducing the likelihood of a larger rate cut in this meeting,' CareEdge said in the report. The report further added, 'We anticipate the policy statement to strike a dovish tone while remaining cautious about evolving global developments.' The report cites the ease in retail inflation, saying that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April fell to 3.2 per cent, marking a six-year low. The retail inflation has also stayed below the 4 per cent threshold for three consecutive months, and the decline in food and beverage inflation contributed to this lower inflation rate. Inflation in the food and beverages category decreased to 2.1 per cent in April, from a peak of 9.7 per cent in October 2024. The report highlighted that despite the improvements in the economic growth figures, the external headwinds remain a concern. These concerns are likely to share the sentiments of the RBI's MPC. The Indian economy grew by 6.5 per cent in real terms in the recently concluded financial year 2024-25, while it grows by 7.4 per cent in the January-March quarter (Q4) of FY25. This was a sharp rise from the 6.2 per cent recorded in the previous quarter. On the demand side influences, private consumption has moderated to 6 per cent in Q4 from 8.1 per cent in Q3. Rural demand is expected to be supported by favourable agricultural output and easing inflation, while the outlook for urban demand remains mixed, likely impacting the decisions. Further, as per the CareEdge Ratings, while economic activity has improved compared to H1 FY25, assessing whether the recovery is broad-based and whether the growth momentum can be sustained amid persistent global uncertainties remains crucial. Much of the top line growth in Q4 was driven by higher net indirect tax collections and a moderation in import demand, rather than a widespread improvement across sectors. 'Although agriculture and services have shown resilience, several concerns remain. Subdued manufacturing growth, uneven consumption demand, a delayed recovery in private capital expenditure, and weak exports are key factors that warrant close monitoring,' the report added in its analysis of possible decisions of the MPC that is scheduled on Friday.
