Kohima: Nagaland Governor La Ganesan on Saturday emphasised to protect Naga heritage, culture, tradition and customary practices.
Releasing a book titled 'The Lotha Naga Customary Law, Practices & Attires' authored by P. Pius Lotha at Raj Bhavan, Kohima, the Governor emphasised the importance of cultural rootedness in the face of globalisation.
Noting that tradition is not a relic of the past but the foundation of one's identity, he said such documentation is especially vital for the youth, fostering a sense of pride, belonging and resilience.
In his address, the Governor expressed great delight at being part of the occasion, noting that the book launch was more than a literary event. 'It was a tribute to the enduring spirit of the Lotha Naga community and a reaffirmation of the collective duty to preserve indigenous culture,' he said.
The Governor lauded Pius Lotha for his meticulous research, describing the book as a 'source of invaluable knowledge' that captures the essence of Lotha traditions, governance, family structures, customary laws and traditional attire.
He highlighted that the work offers not just a historical account, but a living dialogue between the past and the present.
'Our society has long depended on oral narratives. This written effort ensures that our customs and values are not lost to time but preserved for generations,' he remarked.
He noted that the tension between tradition and modernity often stems from a communication gap, and books like this serve as conversation starters, bridging generations and encouraging mutual respect.
'By preserving Lotha Naga heritage, we enrich not just our state but also contribute to the cultural mosaic of the nation,' he added.
The Governor congratulated the author for his perseverance, noting that the book was the result of 14 years of dedicated effort.
He called upon everyone present to be custodians of culture and tradition, asserting that in preserving heritage, 'we bequeath to posterity the greatest wealth of all, identity.'
The event was attended by cultural leaders, members of the Lotha community, and government officials. K.N. Mhonthung Lotha, Chairman Kohima Lotha Hoho, chaired the event.

The picketing in Senapati district is being led by the Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) along with its federating student unions, including the Mao Students' Union (MSU), Maram Students' Union (MKS), Poumai Naga Students' Union (PNTM), Thangal Students' Union (TAJ), and Zeliangrong Students' Union, Senapati Zone (ZSU-SZ). Meanwhile, ANSAM has reaffirmed its opposition to any decision that undermines the historical and traditional rights of the Naga people, particularly concerning unrestricted movement across the India-Myanmar border. The student body emphasized that the ongoing protest is part of a broader campaign aimed at securing recognition and respect for these rights. Sources confirmed that the picketing of govt offices has severely impacted administrative operations across the Naga-inhabited districts, adding to concerns over governance and public services.

Nagaland govt to set up commission for reviewing reservation policy: Tribal group
Kohima, The Nagaland government on Tuesday agreed in principle to set up a commission within 15 days to examine the core demands of five tribes concerning the state's reservation policy. This was stated by CORRP, a panel comprising representatives of five major tribes of Nagaland. Its members held a meeting convened by Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton during the day over their demand for a review of the state's reservation policy. Patton told reporters after the meeting that the state Cabinet would discuss the matter later this month. Tesinlo Semy, Convenor of the Committee on Review of Reservation Policy , told reporters that the discussions were 'fruitful' and that the government has assured them that a commission would be formed by June 17. 'The commission will examine the core demands of the five tribes and submit its recommendations to the government. The cabinet will then take a decision,' Semy said. While no date was fixed for the next meeting, he said that the CORRP would meet with the government again after 15 days. Asked about the composition and leadership of the Commission, Semy said the decision rests with the Cabinet. The five major Naga tribes of Nagaland held coordinated protest rallies in various districts on May 29, demanding a review of the state's long-standing job reservation policy. The coordinated action was led under the banner of the CORRP, an organisation formed in 2023 as mandated by the apex tribal organisations of the five tribes – Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma and Sumi. They had submitted an 'Ultimatum Reminder', citing the Nagaland government's alleged failure to respond to two key communications: a memorandum dated September 20, 2024, and a 30-day ultimatum served on April 26, 2025. Their primary concerns revolve around the indefinite nature of the current reservation system, originally intended for a 10-year term starting in 1977, and the demand for either its abolition or the exclusive reservation of the remaining unreserved communities. Initially, a 25 per cent quota was allocated for seven tribes in non-technical and non-gazetted posts for 10 years. These tribes were designated as 'backward' based on their educational and economic disadvantage and limited representation in state services. This reservation has since increased to 37 per cent, officials said. Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton told reporters that the tribal bodies had initially called for either scrapping the existing Backward Reservation policy or allocating the remaining quota to the five tribes. 'After prolonged deliberation, they requested that instead of a mere committee, a bi-parliamentary commission be formed,' Patton said. He added that the government has asked the tribal bodies for time until June 17 to allow the Cabinet to deliberate on the matter. 'We are thankful to the five tribal bodies for agreeing to this timeline and for deciding to keep their agitation in abeyance until then,' he said. Asserting that the cabinet is expected to hold a meeting within the stipulated period to decide on setting up the proposed commission, Patton said that tribal leaders would be informed of the cabinet's decision, and further meetings would be held if necessary. Following the assurance of the government, the CORRP has kept on hold its proposed agitation.

How Assam Rifles Is Shaping Young Futures In Nagaland Through Education
Last Updated: In partnership with NIEDO & Axis Bank, Assam Rifles is providing free residential coaching, mentorship, and life skills training to underprivileged students preparing for NEET, JEE Assam Rifles provides logistical support to the National Integrity Education Development Organisation (NIEDO) in offering coaching to underprivileged students for JEE and IIT entrance examinations. A one-year residential coaching programme initiative is sponsored by Axis Bank and aims to secure a better future for deserving students from various parts of Nagaland. The NIEDO–Assam Rifles partnership has been instrumental in shaping the careers of several young Naga boys and girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by providing them access to quality education. It also offers mentorship, enabling students not only to prepare for competitive examinations but also to foster personal development. In May 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Assam Rifles, Axis Bank, and NIEDO to establish the 'Late Capt N Kengurüse, Mahavir Vir Chakra (MVC) Centre of Excellence and Wellness" at Chieswema, Kohima. Named after Capt Kengurüse of 2 Rajputana Rifles, who hailed from Nagaland's Kohima district, he made the supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War while single-handedly clearing a well-fortified medium machine gun bunker. He was posthumously awarded India's second-highest gallantry award for this extraordinary act of valour. This centre prepares students for prestigious competitive examinations such as NEET and JEE. The programme began in 2022 with the selection of 30 meritorious students from across Nagaland. The aspirants underwent rigorous testing to ensure that only the most deserving candidates were selected. The project has been conceptualised as a year-long, fully residential coaching and mentoring facility for NEET and JEE examinations. Qualified and experienced faculty members from NIEDO deliver the curriculum, ensuring high-quality education. The collaboration between NIEDO and Assam Rifles has had a significant impact on the youth of Nagaland. Building on the success of the Chieswema centre, Assam Rifles and NIEDO have expanded their efforts to other regions. In August 2024, a similar initiative was launched in Ghaspani (Medziphema) with the establishment of the Subedar PB Chhetri, Kirti Chakra Centre of Excellence. Subedar Chhetri of 7 Assam Rifles was awarded India's second-highest civilian award for leading his men in an anti-terrorist operation in J&K at an altitude of 14,000 feet. During this encounter, 72 armed terrorists returning to J&K after completing military training in ISI-run camps in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) were neutralised, and 13 others were apprehended. This programme is being conducted under the direction of the Director General, Assam Rifles, and implemented by NIEDO. While the Inspector General, Assam Rifles (North) oversees the project's overall operations, Axis Bank is providing funding support for this social responsibility initiative. In addition to the faculty, officers from Assam Rifles also share their experiences in preparing for competitive exams and provide guidance in personality development. The partnership between NIEDO and Assam Rifles exemplifies a successful model of public–private collaboration aimed at empowering underprivileged local youth through education. By providing access to quality coaching, personal development programmes, and mentorship, this initiative is shaping the careers of underprivileged students in Nagaland and offering them opportunities for a brighter future.
