Kylian Mbappe fitness update after Real Madrid's Club World Cup win over Juve
Gonzalo Garcia's second-half header – assisted by Trent Alexander-Arnold – proved decisive as Los Blancos advanced through from tonight's heavyweight last-16 tie at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.
Mbappe missed all three of Madrid's group-stage contests after being hospitalised with acute gastroenteritis on the eve of this summer's tournament.
But Alonso sent Mbappe on in place of match-winner Garcia in the 68th minute and while the Frenchman was unable to make a meaningful difference, he will no doubt be pleased to get some minutes in his legs following a challenging few days on the sidelines.
Madrid will take on one of Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey in the next round at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, where Alonso will look to move one step further to securing his first piece of silverware as head coach.
'We're growing game by game and today we improved again,' Alonso said shortly after the final whistle.
'You have to know how to compete and grit your teeth. This is Real Madrid.'
Alonso is optimistic over Mbappe's chances of returning to Madrid's starting XI when the club resume their campaign on Saturday evening.
'Kylian Mbappe? I think he will feel much better for the quarter-finals,' the Spaniard replied when asked for an update on the forward's fitness.
'I talk to him every day, let's see. He feels better.'
Asked whether there is a possibility both Garcia and Mbappe could start together in Madrid's next clash, Alonso replied: 'I'm not yet preparing for the next game.
'I'm happy with Gonzalo and the whole team. We have to start figuring out what we need.
'We'll draw up good conclusions when the times comes.'
Alonso insists he has no preference when it comes to Madrid's next opponents, with Dortmund and Monterrey set to battle it out for a quarter-final spot on Wednesday.
'I'll be following that closely, of course,' the ex-Bayer Leverkusen boss added. More Trending
'It doesn't matter which one I choose. I know Dortmund and the Monterrey coaches very well.'
Alonso is pleased with Alexander-Arnold's contribution, but feels the England right-back has much more to give considering he has 'barely trained' with his new team-mates.
On Alexander-Arnold's first assist as a Madrid player, Alonso said: 'Crossing is his trademark… he's done 500 of those.
'On the right, we sometimes need an extra foot. One-on-one dribbling isn't his thing.
'He comes to Madrid to compete; he's barely trained. Everything takes time.'

Arsenal face Eberechi Eze dilemma as Crystal Palace take transfer stand
Arsenal are in the market for a number of attacking players and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze has now emerged as a serious summer transfer target for Mikel Arteta and Co Crystal Palace will not consider selling Eberechi Eze for a sum lower than the £68million release clause in the player's contract, amid interest in the midfielder from Arsenal. The Gunners are in the market for quality attackers ahead of the new season and have identified Eze, 27, as a serious target. But with Arsenal also looking at big-money deals for Viktor Gyokeres and Rodrygo among others, it remains to be seen if they could finance a deal for Eze, too. Eze is known to have a release clause in his contract, which still has two years left to run at Selhurst Park. But while reports elsewhere have indicated that Arsenal may attempt to sign Eze for less than £68m, Crystal Palace will not entertain any lower offers. The FA Cup winners value Eze at the amount his release clause stands at and, as such, will resist offers that fall short of that sum. Interestingly, the clause dictates that the £68m needs to be paid in three instalments - one third up front, another third next summer and the final payment in 2027. There have been suggestions that Arsenal are eager to finance the deal over a longer period to land a player who was on their books as a teenager. The Gunners are understood to have offered Real Sociedad slightly more than the specified release clause for their playmaker, Martin Zubimendi, in order to pay for the Spaniard in instalments rather than one lump sum. But Palace want fees paid for England ace Eze as per his contract. Eze has also attracted interest from Arsenal's arch-rivals, Tottenham, following a stellar 2024-25 campaign which culminated in him scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final for the Eagles. Arsenal are also said to be in advanced talks with Sporting Lisbon over a deal for Gyokeres, while they have their sights set on signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid. Both of those prospective deals would command significant transfer fees in addition to the sum they have paid to extract Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, which is in excess of £50m. Outgoings could help finance those deals plus a swoop for Eze, who is also capable of playing wide on the left and could emerge as an alternative option there if a move for Rodrygo fails to materialise before the end of next month. Fabio Vieira is among a number of surplus players who could be sold after returning to the club following a loan spell with his old team, FC Porto.

Jude Bellingham cruelly denied reunion with brother Jobe at Club World Cup
Both Jude and Jobe Bellingham are playing at the Club World Cup for Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund respectively but the two will not meet despite the club's playing each other in the next round Jude Bellingham has been robbed of the chance to play against brother Jobe at the Club World Cup after a FIFA ban. The two were expected to face off in the quarter-finals of the tournament, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund beating Juventus and Monterrey respectively in the last 16. But Jobe - who signed for the Bundesliga giants from Sunderland earlier this summer - will not play in that game having picked up a booking in the German side's latest win. With two cautions now to his name, he will now serve an automatic suspension. Yellow cards are only wiped out after the quarter-finals of the competition. And Jobe was clearly gutted at the prospect of missing out on the next game and thus a reunion with his brother. But Dortmund boss Niko Kovac believes it is only a matter of time before the pair meet on the pitch. Speaking after the game, the Dortmund boss said: "I think we all saw that he [Jobe Bellingham] was very disappointed. I think he did not exactly know that the second yellow card is a suspension at half-time. He was a little bit surprised. "OK, he's young. His brother is also young so I'm convinced they will face each other, maybe next season in the Champions League and then the future. The future is for them. "The Club World Cup would be nice but now it isn't. Someone else must play for him but it's also okay." And while the pair won't get to play against each other for now, Jude has already revealed his ambitions to become teammates with his brother on the international stage. He said: 'Because we're of a similar age and we've played together for so long - in the street and on tufts of grass - to play with my brother for England... that would be the biggest dream of my life. "That would mean more than any of the trophies, especially if we managed to do it on a consistent basis and play at a major tournament together, win things together. Nothing would even get close to that." Jobe had so far made four appearances for Dortmund at the Club World Cup following his blockbuster move from Sunderland. And he managed to score his first goal for the club in a 4-3 win against Mamelodi Sundowns last month. Jude has also been on the scoresheet at the tournament, netting against Mexican side Pachuca in the group stage.
