Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials used AI erasers to tamper with a photograph flagging a civic problem, and reposted the picture claiming that the problem had been 'duly addressed'.
When a Pallikaranai resident raised a complaint on X last week about exposed power cables posing a danger to school students on Sunnambu Kolathur Road, GCC quickly closed the complaint on its website with an image of the same spot altered using AI.
The corporation assistant executive engineer, who responded to the complaint, posted an image that was edited using an AI eraser tool widely available on mobile phones and computers for free.
While cars, bikes, and other objects were removed, the subject of the complaint—the EB wires—were ignored.
The official also forgot to remove the shadow from the image, which appeared smudged and blurred in the doctored parts, as is typical when an AI eraser is used on an object. P Kannadasan, the resident who flagged this, said it was disappointing to know GCC closed complaints without redressal.

However, such options were missing in the portal for residents. Perungudi zone AEE Manoharan said he was not aware of the complaint. "It's a highways road in the GCC zone. I forwarded it to the highways department. I did not use AI. GCC will remove the cables on its own," he said.
Perungudi zonal chairman S V Ravichandran said the govt is serious about grievance redressal. Any stray incidents like this will be taken seriously, and officials will be punished.
GCC receives 100 complaints daily on various platforms, and this is not the first time GCC has closed complaints without redressal.Jayaram Venkatesan, convenor of Arappor Iyakkam, said the corporation cannot make raising complaints look futile.

Govt plans elite marine force to protect wildlife along Chennai coast

Chennai: The city's coastlineis getting a new line of defence an elite marine force to guard turtle nesting beaches and fragile marine habitats. With boats, surveillance gear, and joint action squads, the unit will crack down on poachers, polluters, and destructive trawlers. Conceived as a specialised unit with zero tolerance towards illegal fishing and wildlife crime, the force will focus on turtle nesting sites and other sensitive marine habitats located within five nautical miles of the shoreline. The move is said to be a timely intervention at a time when marine ecosystems face mounting threats from unchecked fishing, pollution, and habitat loss. State forest secretary Supriya Sahu said it will play a critical role in strengthening real-time responses to incidents involving stranded, injured, or dead marine life, while also enhancing patrolling and surveillance during the olive ridley turtle nesting and hatching season from Nov to April. "The initiative rests on strong inter-departmental coordination, bringing together coastal security group, Indian coast guard, fisheries department, and fishermen associations to ensure effective enforcement," she said. The collaboration seeks to integrate marine protection with community participation You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai | Gold Rates Today in Chennai | Silver Rates Today in Chennai Govt has sanctioned 96 lakh for the initiative for one year. Two teams comprising marine watchers and drivers, with about a dozen personnel in each boat, will form the operational backbone of the force. One existing boat with the department will be modernised, and a new vessel is to be acquired soon. Once deployed, the unit is expected to bring tangible improvements to marine conservation along the Chennai coastline. Officials say enhanced patrolling will reduce olive ridley turtle mortalities, curtail illegal poaching and destructive trawling practices, and deter other harmful activities threatening fragile ecosystems. In addition, systematic data collection will aid research and long-term conservation efforts. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Schools struggle to complete syllabus due to early Dasara vacations

Mangaluru: With Dasara celebrations falling early this year, instead of the usual mid-Oct, schools are under pressure to finish the syllabus. Already hit by over 10 days of unscheduled monsoon holidays, most schools have managed to cover only 25% of the syllabus to date, while they are expected to complete 50% before midterm. Concerned about the lost time, schools have urged govt to consider holding the midterm exams only after the Dasara break, to ensure fair preparation time for students and enough time for the teachers to complete the syllabus. Some schools are rushing through the syllabus to meet the deadline, sources said. Dasara celebrations will begin this Sept end. A majority of the schools have managed to complete 20% to 25% of the syllabus so far. "We started the academic year with Foundational Literacy and Numeracy programme. Along with mandatory internal assessments that took several days, the unscheduled monsoon holidays also disrupted the schedule. As a result, majority of schools have not been able to finish the stipulated syllabus. Hence, it is advisable that the exams are held in Oct, or after Dasara," a govt school teacher said. Another govt primary school teacher said that compared to previous years, the academic environment has improved across all govt schools. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These 11 Everyday Foods Might Be the Key to Knee Pain Relief Undo "In previous years, teachers were loaded with non-academic or clerical work like attending seminars and other assignments. Due to associations opposing these assignments, we are able to focus on academics this year. As a result, we have managed to complete a good amount of the syllabus. However, this year we are loaded with Learning Based Assignments, where the school needs to upload every student's work online. We will be able to complete about 35% syllabus before mid-terms," said the teacher. A parent said, "With less time, schools are just trying to complete the syllabus. Some are sending lesson plans through WhatsApp and asking parents to complete the chapters for the students. Even subjects like mathematics, science, and English are rushing their syllabus. This will hamper the learning process, and we are concerned about it." GS Shashidhar, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, said that all schools must adhere to the academic calendar of events and cannot claim that early Dasara is hindering them from completing the syllabus. "We understand that rain holidays did cause inconvenience, and it can be resolved with full-day classes on Saturdays," he added.
