Celtics trade Georges Niang to Jazz, agree to deal with ex-Raptor Chris Boucher
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Celtics are trading recently acquired forward Georges Niang and two future second-round draft picks to the Utah Jazz in exchange for rookie RJ Luis Jr., ESPN reported on Tuesday. In a separate deal, power forward Chris Boucher has agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Celtics, his agent Sam Permut confirmed to The Associated Press. Boucher has spent the past seven seasons with the Toronto Raptors, where he was part of their 2019 championship team. Niang is headed to Utah just a month after being dealt to Boston as part of a three-team deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta. Niang previously spent four seasons with Utah. He appeared in 79 games split between Atlanta and Cleveland last season when he averaged a career-high 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Shams: Celtics send Georges Niang, seconds to Utah Jazz for RJ Luis Jr., cap savings
The Boston Celtics have traded backup forward Georges Niang and two second round picks to the Utah Jazz for rookie RJ Luis Jr., per recent reporting from ESPN's Shams Charania. The move now has Boston roughly $1.7 million above the first apron and $9.4 million above the luxury tax line, per The Third Apron's Yossi Gozlan, and have created a $8.2 million trade exception from the move as well. Per Gozlan, the trade shrinks the Celtics' payroll and luxury tax by a total of $50 million, with Boston having saved $286 million in tax and payroll this offseason with the Niang deal plus trading away Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, and cutting JD Davison. The trade sets up Boston to be able to add to their team with the signing of former Toronto Raptors big man Chris Boucher without dipping back above the second apron, and could put them in range of opening up the full midlevel exception if they can get under the first apron. As for the incoming Luis Jr., a 22-year-old, 6-foot-7 wing signed as a two way player with the Jazz who went unselected in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Celtics get a St. John's alum who won Big East Player of the Year in 2025. He put up 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game last season while shooting 43.9% from the field, 33.6% from deep, and 74.7% from the line The move will fill Boston's only open two way slot, with Max Shulga and Amari Williams, the Celtics' Nos. 46 and 57 picks in the draft this summer, taking the other two. Report: Celtics trade 9-year veteran, draft picks to Jazz for rookie RJ Luis
The Boston Celtics have reportedly agreed to trade nine-year NBA veteran Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz in a cost-cutting move, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Boston will also send the Jazz two future second-round picks in exchange for two-way rookie RJ Luis. The Jazz used part of their $26.6 million trade exception created when they moved John Collins to the LA Clippers to acquire Niang, who played with the Jazz from 2017-2021. By moving Niang, the Celtics reportedly reduced their payroll and luxury tax by $50 million, according to Yossi Gozlan of The front office has cut approximately $286 million from its expenses since the start of the offseason. Luis was a consensus second-team All-American last season at St. John's, averaging 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, two assists and 1.4 steals on 33.6% shooting from 3-point range as a junior. He was also named the Big East Player of the Year, becoming the third player in program history to win. The 6-foot-6 guard signed a two-way contract with the Jazz on July 7 after going undrafted. He didn't play in either the Salt Lake City Summer League or the NBA Summer League due to left knee soreness sustained during the predraft process. Before playing two years at St. John's, Luis spent one season at UMass, averaging 11.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals. He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Freshman Team.
