Yoga events planned at central prison, tourist spots
Rajamahendravaram: East Godavari district collector P Prasanthi announced on Sunday the launch of the 'Yogandhra Calendar' as part of the district's yoga awareness campaign.
The initiative is in line with the 'Yogandhra Pradesh' calendar issued by the state government and is aimed at promoting yoga as a daily practice across all sections of society. As per the plan, starting from Monday, until June 20, yoga sessions will be held each day with participation from different occupational and social groups across the district. These sessions will be conducted under the direct supervision of trained and certified yoga instructors to ensure proper guidance and maximum benefit for the participants. Collector Prasanthi further announced that, on June 21, International Yoga Day celebrations will be held in Visakhapatnam with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expected to attend the event.
In a special initiative, the state government has instructed that a state-level yoga programme be held on May 27, Tuesday inside the Central Jail and other prisons in East Godavari district, involving inmates who have undergone yoga training. Additionally, yoga practice sessions are scheduled to be conducted at four popular tourist destinations in the district.
These include Saraswati Ghat, Rajamahendravaram on June 1; Satyadeva Nursery in Kadiyam on June 7; the sacred site of Goshpada Kshetram in Kovvur on June 14; and Nagaravanam, Diwancheruvu on June 20. To further promote yoga among the public, competitions will be held across the district up to International Yoga Day. Winners from these district-level events will be allowed to participate in the main Yogandhra Pradesh celebrations in Visakhapatnam in the presence of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, following the instructions of East Godavari district collector Prasanthi, Superintendent of the Central Jail S Rahul announced that the yoga session will be held from 7 am to 8 am on Tuesday and will include around 1,500 participants. These will comprise approximately 1,300 inmates, as well as jail officials, guarding staff, ministerial employees, public representatives, and other officials. The session will be conducted under the guidance of certified yoga instructors to ensure safe and effective practice.
On Sunday, joint collector S Chinna Ramudu and Rajamahendravaram RDO R Krishna Naik visited the Central Jail to inspect the arrangements. They reviewed the preparations and provided necessary instructions to the prison authorities to ensure the successful conduct of the event.

Take acknowledgment, officials urge PGRS complainants
Rajamahendravaram: East Godavari district collector P Prasanthi directed officials to ensure that all complaints received through the Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS) are properly acknowledged and that complainants receive confirmation. She said that a state-level audit report revealed that around 50% of complainants had not received endorsements for their grievances. She spoke at a PGRS grievance redressal session held at the Collectorate on Monday. The collector said that most grievances received through PGRS were related to the Revenue and Survey departments, followed by Police, Panchayat Raj, and Municipal departments. During the PGRS session, the Revenue department received 127 complaints, Panchayat Raj 40, Police 30, Agriculture 16, and various other departments 73. The collector distributed artificial limbs worth Rs 25,000 to four beneficiaries, provided by the District Rehabilitation Centre for Differently-Abled Persons. A woman from Garikapatnam in Korukonda mandal complained that despite having her husband's death certificate, the village secretariat staff were denying her a pension. D Vijaya Shiva Keerthi, a differently-abled woman from Rajamahendravaram, said her disability pension was stopped because her brother secured a government job. She requested that she be identified separately in the family mapping process and be granted a pension. Srinivasa Rao alleged corruption and irregularities in Hukumpeta Gram Panchayat and sought an inquiry. Joint collector S Chinna Ramudu, DRO T Sitarama Murthy, CPO L Appala Konda, and DRDA PD NVVS Murthy attended the programme. Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner Ketan Garg instructed officials to ensure the timely and satisfactory resolution of PGRS complaints. A total of 27 grievances were received during the PGRS session held at the Municipal Office on Monday. Garg stressed that the government prioritises resolving public issues. Residents of VAMBAY Apartments in Aava Road submitted a petition requesting the construction of drainage for Blocks 6, 7, and 8. Another resident, Rella Bindu from Rajendranagar, complained that she was being charged a tax for a tap connection that does not exist in her house.

Road safety norms essential to curb accidents: Collector
Rajamahendravaram: East Godavari district collector P Prasanthi has stressed that strict enforcement of road safety regulations and traffic rules is essential to reduce accidents. She directed officials from various departments to submit detailed reports on the steps taken for road safety by the next review meeting. Presiding over the District-Level Road Safety Committee (DLRSC) meeting held at the Collector's camp office on Monday under the Roads and Buildings Department, the collector expressed dissatisfaction over the poor implementation of decisions taken in previous meetings. She questioned the delay in setting up lighting on national highways, asking why three months were needed for the task,and urged officials to explore alternative ways to complete urgent works regardless of tender-related issues. She said the high accident rates, especially on national highways, and asked for immediate submission of action-taken reports (ATRs) detailing the preventive measures implemented so far. The collector also called on all departments to familiarise themselves with the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) app introduced by the Central Government. Noting that state highway tolls were on par with national highways despite subpar safety standards, she instructed officials of the Road Development Corporation to conduct regular inspections. She warned private agencies working purely for revenue generation would be served notices, and contractors showing negligence would face penalties. She emphasised the need for city-wide speed limits, helmet enforcement, drunken driving checks, and other safety measures. Superintendent of Police D Narasimh Kishore said that the number of accidents and fatalities had nearly doubled in the past three months. While incidents involving RTC buses had decreased, four-wheelers were contributing significantly to the rise in accidents. He identified the stretch between Gaman Bridge and Zero Point as a high-risk zone. He pointed out the lack of lighting on highways and urged the Roads Department to coordinate with police before undertaking any roadwork. He also proposed that officials from the transport, police, and other departments form multi-disciplinary teams to carry out joint inspections. The SP dismissed the misconception that helmet use is not mandatory within city limits, clarifying that no such exemption exists under the law. R&B Executive Engineer SBV Reddy and other senior officials attended the meeting.
