Guwahati:
Assam
CM
Himanta Biswa Sarma
on Tuesday accused Trinamool of portraying his govt's firm stance against illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims as anti-Bengali. He claimed
TMC
's alleged attempt was nothing but a desperate ploy to shield Muslim infiltrators from the neighbouring country.
In a post on his X handle, Sarma said, "Assam has been waging a relentless war against illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims for several decades. The recent attempt by the @AITCofficial to distort my media remarks and portray our stand as anti-Bengali is nothing but a desperate ploy to shield Muslim infiltrators from Bangladesh — whose very presence threatens to alter the demographic fabric of our nation."
"Let it be made absolutely clear: in Assam, every Indian citizen — including Bengali-speaking people — fully understands our position and supports our uncompromising stand against illegal Muslim immigration from Bangladesh," he added.

TMC slammed Sarma for his remark that "writing Bengali as mother tongue in the Census documents will quantify the number of foreigners in Assam". In a post on X, the party said that Bengali was the seventh-most spoken language in the world and added, "… under BJP' rule, Bengali-speaking Indians are subjected to racial profiling, targeted harassment and systematic persecution." The party further said Sarma disgraced the CM's office by branding Bengalis as "illegal Bangladeshis".

"He must apologise immediately."
In response to Sarma, TMC spokesperson, Debangshu Bhattacharya posted on X saying, " Read between the lines, people. This is @himantabiswa's last-ditch attempt to veil his XENOPHOBIA and LINGUISTIC CHAUVINISM behind communal smokescreens. You claim your Govt only targets "illegal Bangladeshi Muslims". But in the final NRC list, out of the 19.6 lakh people excluded, 12 lakh were Bengali Hindus.
Was their faith the problem too? Or was it their language? You say your crusade isn't against Bengalis.
Then how do you explain the fact that all but four of the 30 people who died in Assam's detention centres were Bengali-speaking?Your track record shows only one unifying marker of persecution: Bengali. This isn't about illegal immigration. This is about your PATHOLOGICAL HATRED for a language, a people, and a culture."
Meanwhile, Assam BJP claimed over 10 districts in the state had become Muslim-majority and the changing demography was a major cause for concern. Districts such as Dhubri have more than 90% population belonging to a particular community, the party said. "It is not only a demographic change but also a serious threat to indigenous people of the state," a party source claimed.

Mamata leads protest march in Kolkata, warns BJP of ‘dire political backlash' if it doesn't stop 'harassing' Bengali-speaking people
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the BJP-led Centre on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) for what, she called, its policy of harassing and mistreating Bengali-speaking people across the country and warned the saffron party of dire political consequences if it did not put an immediate stop to such actions. Ms. Banerjee also alleged that the ruling dispensation at the Centre was 'influencing the Election Commission of India' to achieve its political ambitions across states. She was speaking at a public meeting after holding a protest march in rain-drenched Kolkata against the alleged torture of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled States. 'I will challenge the central government notices which were surreptitiously sent to BJP-ruled states to harass Bengali-speaking people and detain them at the slightest suspicion,' the Trinamool Congress supremo alleged at the rally, which terminated at the Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata. 'I am ashamed and disheartened at the Centre and the BJP's attitude towards Bengalis,' Banerjee claimed. Expressing her resolve to fight the BJP 'inch by inch' if it tried to "persecute" Bengali-speaking people, she said that the saffron camp should remain prepared for a fresh round of 'Khela Hobey' (the game-is-on slogan coined ahead of the 2021 state polls) during the assembly elections in 2026. 'I have decided to speak more in Bangla from now on, hold me in detention camps if you can,' she said while attacking the BJP. March held ahead of PM Modi's visit Senior leaders of the party, including TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, joined Banerjee as she led thousands of people in the march, which began from College Square in central Kolkata around 1.45 pm. The march will terminate at Dorina Crossing in Dharmatala. The nearly 3-km route was wrapped in security, with nearly 1,500 police personnel guarding the barricaded pavements and adjacent buildings. Vehicular traffic was diverted along multiple arterial roads in the central parts of the city because of the programme. Similar demonstrations have also been organised by the TMC in the district headquarter towns across the State. The protests are being held a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the State. Asserting that there are nearly 22 lakh migrant workers from Bengal working in other parts of the country, who have valid identity documents like Aadhar, EPIC and PAN cards, Banerjee said she would not tolerate any disrespect meted out to them on flimsy grounds. 'What right does the BJP have in harassing Bengalis like this, even arresting them and forcefully pushing them back to Bangladesh? Is West Bengal not part of India?' she asked. Stating that "extreme situations call for extreme counter measures", Banerjee said, "I will say this in the simplest of words. We will not fight you physically. But if the BJP doesn't put an end to its persecution policies immediately, then the Trinamool Congress knows how to make them stop."

SC refuses to lift stay on ‘Udaipur Files' release, asks Centre to review film by July 21
The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to lift the stay on the release of the Hindi film Udaipur Files, which is reportedly based on the 2022 killing of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, Bar and Bench reported. The film was scheduled to be released on July 11. The Delhi High Court had stayed the release on June 10 and directed the Union government to examine the film's content. On Wednesday, a Supreme Court bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi said that it expected the Union government to take its decision ' immediately, without loss of time ', reported Live Law. The bench added that it would await the outcome of the government's review and listed the matter for further hearing on July 21. In June 2022, Lal, a tailor, was killed in Rajasthan's Udaipur for purportedly sharing a social media post in support of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party Spokesperson Nupur Sharma. She had made disparaging remarks about Prophet Muhammad during a television debate in May 2022. The assailants and several other persons accused in the matter were arrested by the Rajasthan Police. A video showed two men claiming responsibility for the killing of Lal as they brandished the cleavers used in the murder. The murder case was investigated by the National Investigation Agency and the persons accused in the matter were charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The trial is underway in a Special NIA Court in Jaipur. The High Court had stayed the release of Udaipur Files while hearing a batch of petitions, including one filed by Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani, seeking a ban on the film. The petitioners had alleged that the film is communally provocative and vilifies the Muslim community A day before the order, the Supreme Court had heard a writ petition filed by Mohammed Javed, one of the eight persons accused in the murder case. Javed argued that the release of the film would violate his right to a fair trial. He had sought that the release of the film be postponed until the trial in the matter concluded. The petitioner also argued that the film, based on its trailer, appeared to be communally provocative. In response, the Supreme Court said that the petition could be mentioned before the appropriate bench when the Supreme Court reopened on July 14 after the summer break. It added that the movie could be released in the meantime.

'Terrorist act': US Ambassador Mike Huckabee condemns killing of Palestinian-American by Israelis; urges accountability
Sayfollah "Saif" Musallet, Palestinian-American killed by Israeli settlers US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has condemned the 'criminal and terrorist act" of killing a Palestinian-American in the West Bank and called for a thorough investigation and full accountability after Israeli settlers beat the young man to death. Sayfollah "Saif" Musallet, a 20-year-old American citizen from Florida, was killed on Friday in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. A second man was also killed by gunfire during the same incident, ABC News reported. Musallet's family said he was trying to defend their land from Israeli settlers who surrounded him for over three hours and blocked an ambulance from reaching him. He died before he could be taken to a hospital. "I have asked Israel to aggressively investigate the murder of Saif Mussallet, an American citizen who was visiting family in Sinjil when he was beaten to death," Huckabee said in a post on X. — GovMikeHuckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) "There must be accountability for this criminal and terrorist act. Saif was just 20 yrs old," he added. Musallet had arrived in the West Bank on June 4 and was spending the summer in an area known for hosting members of the Palestinian diaspora from North America. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Pair of Reading Glasses That Can Look Far and near,Auto Focus,Smart Zoom SOLYMALL Shop Now Undo He was born and raised in Florida, lived in Tampa, and owned a small business there. His family described him as 'a kind, hard-working, and deeply respected young man' known for his generosity, ambition, and strong connection to his Palestinian heritage. 'This is an unimaginable nightmare and injustice that no family should ever have to face,' his family said in a statement demanding justice for his death. He is the fifth American killed in the West Bank since the start of the Israel–Hamas war on October 7, 2023, according to AFP. Violence by extremist settlers in the West Bank has sharply increased in parallel with Israel's ongoing offensive in Gaza. The US government initially responded quietly to the killing, but public pressure has grown. Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, also called for action. "The Trump administration cannot continue to turn a blind eye to what is happening in the West Bank if it is truly committed to finding a just and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinian people," said Jeffries in a statement as quoted by AFP. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor and longtime supporter of Israeli settlements, has previously rejected the notion that Israel occupies the West Bank, referring to the area by its biblical name, 'Judea and Samaria."
