Relieved Carpenter relishes making long-awaited England debut in USA

Rhyl Journal21-07-2025
The Leeds-born star, 23, made his international bow as part of Steve Borthwick's team that beat the USA 40-5 in Washington DC on Saturday night to round off a summer clean sweep of victories after an impressive 2-0 win in Argentina.
But the match in the American capital kicked off an hour later than planned due to a lightning strike in the area, with the game then halted by a further half an hour on 29 minutes when another struck within 10 miles of the ground when England were 14-0 up.
The disruption followed several similar incidents at the recent Club World Cup in the US, with champions Chelsea's clash against Benfica delayed by nearly two hours after the Portuguese giants endured an even longer disruption against Auckland City.
Sale Sharks full-back Carpenter, watched on by dad Will, mum Jackie, partner Federica and brother Josh at Audi Field, was one of six players to be handed their debuts alongside fellow starters Max Ojomoh and Arthur Clark.
And asked about how the delays affected him, he said: 'Most of us getting new caps were just hoping the game was going to start, to be honest!
'Thankfully the weather held out eventually – there are a lot of happy boys in there and it's been a really special tour.
'It's probably not one the lads expected – it was probably the longest game of rugby a lot of the boys have had.
'But to go out there and get the win makes it very special.
'We've got a lot of strong leaders in there who led the way, kept us composed and got us chilled out and fired up at the right time.
'Mentally it's quite tough when you're about to start a game, then come off again.
'But I thought the boys handled it really well – to get three wins out of three is a great way to do it.
'The connections boys have made is massive and there are lots of happy faces in the dressing room right now.
'It was definitely special [to have my family here] – they're the reason I'm here. They've supported me throughout as a young one and as a professional.
'For them to be here for my first one is massively important to me.'
Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore, Cadan Murley, Jack van Poortvliet, Harry Randall and debutant Gabriel Oghre all scored to make it three transatlantic wins from three and extend England's winning run to seven matches – their longest streak since back in 2020.
Carpenter nearly got on the scoresheet himself only for his dream debut try to be denied after a narrowly-adjudged Murley knock-on.
USA grabbed a late consolation through Shilo Klein to give the home fans who remained something to cheer about but England's work was done as they ended their triumphant tour in style.
England will now enjoy their summer break before gearing up for crunch autumn internationals against the likes of Australia and New Zealand at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
And Carpenter, who delivered a rock-solid display on debut, is desperate to be involved.
'That's definitely a goal of mine,' he added.
'Whether it happens or not I don't know – I've got to go back and perform for Sale now.
'We'll definitely enjoy the break and hopefully when autumn comes round I'm still performing and can get a few more caps.'

Hannah Hampton: England hero's remarkable journey from doctor heartbreak to Euros glory

Hannah Hampton was England's hero in the Euro 2025 final saving two penalties in the shootout but she was told in her youth that she would be unable to pursue a career in football Hannah Hampton saved the day for England against Spain in the Euros final - and her journey to the top has been anything but straightforward. ‌ Hampton kept out two penalties as the Lionesses defended their European crown, having made big stops from Esther Gonzalez and Claudia Pina in regular time. The Chelsea stopper justified Sarina Wiegman 's decision to make her England's number one keeper ahead of Mary Earps, even if some didn't agree with the call at the time. ‌ Those were big shoes to fill, but it was no problem at all for Hampton. ‌ Even longer ago, though, a medical condition might have stopped Hampton's football career before it even started. She had been diagnosed with strabismus, an eye condition which affects depth perception, but didn't let her stop that chasing her dream. "I was told from a young age that I couldn't play football, that it wouldn't be a profession I could pursue. But here I am,' Hampton told the BBC earlier this summer. Her road to the top hasn't been an easy one in more than one way, but the Euro 2025 run is testament to the 24-year-old's resilience. She saved two penalties in the shoot-out against Sweden in the quarter-final, including a sensational stop to turn Sofia Jakobsson's effort onto the post. ‌ And then, in the final, she kept out efforts from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati before Chloe Kelly put away the winning spot-kick. For some, though, Hampton's best and most crucial moment came even earlier in the tournament. ‌ In a must-win group game against the Netherlands, her inch-perfect pass out to Alessia Russo helped start the move from which Lauren James opened the scoring in a 4-0 England win. Without that, the Lionesses might have found themselves going home long before Hampton produced those heroics in the knockout rounds. "Every player has their one story and journey and hers has been incredible,' England boss Wiegman said. 'Starting the tournament and losing the first game, there was so much riding on every game, we had five finals. 'She had to step up and I think she has been amazing. It's a little bit like a fairytale to stop those two penalties in the final." ‌ Hampton stressed the run to glory was a team effort, saying after the final: 'We never say die, we keep going and we did that today.' That team effort wouldn't have been possible without two things, though - Wiegman giving the young keeper her backing, and Hampton delivering. ‌ England's manager made a number of big decisions in the lead-up to the tournament and continued along that path in Switzerland. Her decision to call up teenage forward Michelle Agyemang paid off handsomely, with the youngster scoring crucial goals against Sweden and Italy, while there were some bold calls in defence throughout the tournament itself. England's manager had a lot to lose by backing Hampton over Euro 2022 winner Earps, but her bravery in making the call is part of why she's now celebrating yet another sensational triumph. Ajax star makes feelings clear amid 'difficult' transfer negotiations with Chelsea

Chelsea are keen to sign a new left-back to challenge Marc Cucurella and have opened talks with Ajax to sign 19-year-old star Jorrel Hato, who sat out of their game on Sunday Jorrel Hato asked to be left out of Ajax's friendly against Como on the weekend because he's in negotiations to join Chelsea. Hato has been eyed by a number of Premier League sides this summer after catching the eye of scouts and Chelsea are in pole position to sign him. ‌ The 19-year-old defender, who can play at centre-back and left-back, has already made 111 appearances for the Dutch giants. He still has three years left on his contract with Ajax, but it now seems likely he will leave this summer. ‌ Liverpool and Arsenal have both been credited with interest in the youngster whose versatility and experience make him an attractive prospect. Ajax are braced for his exit after Hato made it clear to head coach John Heitinga that he would rather not play against on Sunday. ‌ That's according to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, who report that negotiations with Chelsea remain 'difficult' despite the player's desire to leave. Ajax are understood to be seeking a fee of between €55-60million (£48m-£52.5m) for Hato, while Chelsea are aiming for a figure closer to £40m. Hato has now missed two straight pre-season matches for Ajax, having also sat out of the previous game against Celtic. Heitinga had claimed his first absence was due to a lack of match fitness, but it is clear that more is going on. Chelsea want a left-back to challenge Marc Cucurella, with Ben Chilwell, Renato Veiga and Ishe Samuels-Smith all leaving this summer. They opened negotiations for the 2024/25 Eredivisie Talent of the Season last week and are hoping to progress them this week. 'Yes, the club [Chelsea] have contacted Ajax,' Hato's agent Humphry Nijman told De Telegraaf on Wednesday. Hato appears to have changed his tune over the past month, having previously declared himself to be 'at home' in Amsterdam. He played 50 times last season as Ajax came up just short of rivals PSV Eindhoven in the league and appeared determined to kick on. ‌ 'The smartest thing is to look ahead to pre-season, that's what I do,' Hato told the club website. 'Of course you want to achieve things in the end: the Champions League, a World Cup and a European Championship, I still have plenty of time. I don't think I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years. 'In the Dutch league, you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately, I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes top. How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here.'

People are just realising Lucy Bronze's middle name after Lionesses hero played whole of Euro 2025 with broken leg

FOOTIE fans are only just realising Lucy Bronze's middle name following England's latest Euros success. Sarina Wiegman 's troops retained their UEFA European Women's Championship title on Sunday with a sensational victory over Spain. 4 4 The Lionesses edged their Spanish counterparts in a thrilling penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in Basel. Bronze played a key role in England's retaining of the trophy, playing in all six of their matches. Scores of footie fans took to Wikipedia to further delve into the life of the Chelsea wingback after the shootout. And they were astounded to learn that one of Bronze's two middle names is TOUGH. The 33-year-old's full name is Lucy Roberta Tough Bronze. The second of Bronze's middle names couldn't be more fitting given the fact that she played the duration of the tournament with a BROKEN LEG. The fan favourite dropped the bombshell injury news during an interview with the BBC. She said: "I have actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia. "And then I have hurt my knee on my other leg. "That's why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game, as I've been in a lot of pain. Inside Lionesses' boozy Euro 2025 celebrations as stars party with pizzas, beers and loved ones after win over Spain "If that's what it takes to play for England, that's what I'll do. Very painful." Reflecting on the Lionesses' latest triumph, she added: "We never lost belief in ourselves. "There was a lot of noise on the outside. We stuck together and dug deep. To win on penalties. This team is so inspiring to be part of. "What we have done today is unbelievable. 4 "Winning on penalties is an amazing feeling, but to lose on penalties is a horrible way to lose a final. "I know a lot of these girls from Barca missing penalties. It is difficult, I have been there a couple of years ago. "This year it was meant for England.
