Paulo Costa draws confidence from Yoel Romero fight to send Khamzat Chimaev stern warning

USA Today4 hours ago
Paulo Costa insists UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev won't be able to impose his will on him.
Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) dethroned Dricus Du Plessis in dominant fashion to claim the middleweight title in Saturday's UFC 319 headliner at United Center in Chicago. Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) had no answer for Chimaev, who landed 12 takedowns and had more than 21 minutes of control time.
Costa (15-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) says knowing he outlasted Olympic silver medalist wrestler Yoel Romero in his fifth UFC fight in 2019, he's confident that he'll have the strength to fend off Chimaev's wrestling.
"He dominate Dricus, but he could not do the same thing that he used to do against welterweights," Costa said of Chimaev on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "Like, maul the guys, finish the guys. When he face a real middleweight, a really heavy middleweight, he's going to have some problems. He's going to look boring. All the other fights, he was in exciting fights because the guys couldn't handle him. Even (Robert) Whittaker. Whittaker is kind of fast, super high-level, but not strong enough to stop a guy like him. Dricus is a real middleweight in my opinion, because he came from, I don't know, maybe 230 pounds to fight at 96 kilos on fight day. That's what I do. I know how to handle these guys.
"Remember my fight against (Yoel) Romero? Romero is a high-level wrestler and very good also. He couldn't put me down. He tried four or five times, he (took me down) once at the end of the second round, like 10 seconds left to finish, but he couldn't keep me there. The same when I fight Khamzat. The same is going to happen. He could not hold me down. Even if he takes me down, I don't think I'm going to stay on my feet the whole time against him. I think he can put me down, but he will not keep me there."
Costa, who recently returned to the win column by defeating Roman Kopylov at UFC 318, had a final message for Chimaev.
"Motherf*cker, look, you know who I am. I'm coming for you," Costa said. "You can hide as much as you want. I know how to fight you. You're going to rush as you always do. You're going to do your sh*t thing. You're going to shoot on my legs. I know that, I expect that, I'm ready for that, but then guess what? We have five rounds.
"I'm going to (make) you pay for every time you shoot on my legs. That's what my coach Eric (Albaraccin) taught me to do. I'm going to make you pay. Then when we're back on the feet, I'm going to hurt you so badly you want to give up, but I will not let you give up. I will hurt you until the referee stops the f*cking fight. I'm coming for you. I will defeat you."

Noah Lyles loses to Oblique Seville in the 100 at rain-soaked Lausanne meet

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Olympic 100-meter champion Noah Lyles was beaten again by Oblique Seville when the Jamaican splashed to victory Wednesday at a rain-soaked Athletissima meet. Seville defied steady rain and standing water on the track to impress in 9.87 seconds — just .01 outside his winning time at London last month when Lyles also was second in his injury-delayed season. 'We can perform even in hurricanes,' Seville told Swiss broadcaster RTS. 'For me it's just execution and to show my dominance, to separate myself from the field — once again.' Lyles clocked 10.02 in his third straight loss over 100 meters on the Diamond League circuit ahead of defending his world title in Tokyo next month. The United States star trailed out of the blocks then chased down fast-starting Ackeem Blake in the next lane. Blake was given the same time in third. 'I just had a horrible reaction to the gun,' Lyles said. 'Physically I feel great and I am confident every race will get better and better.' Seville placed eighth in the Paris Olympics final last year when his Jamaica teammate Kishane Thompson was edged on the line by Lyles. Thompson is fastest in the world this year — clocking 9.75 in June — and won Saturday in Poland when Lyles was second in an encouraging 9.90. Heavy rain marred the women's field events for Olympic champions at the 50th anniversary meet in Lausanne. High jump world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh opted to stop after one failure each at 1.86 meters and then 1.91, and javelin gold medalist Haruka Kitaguchi placed last. The women's pole vault event was stopped entirely. Standout performances early in the program, when the rain was just light, saw Olympic 800 champion Keely Hodgkinson win in 1 minute, 55.69 seconds and Cordell Tinch take the 110 hurdles victory in 12.98 seconds. ___

Esports and sports are moving closer together as NFL, NBA and other leagues chase fans

Esports and sports are moving closer together as NFL, NBA and other leagues chase fans originally appeared on The Sporting News Professional sports face a growing challenge. Fans still tune in for the biggest games, but it can be hard to get them to stay for anything beyond that. With so many forms of digital entertainment competing for screen time, leagues are under pressure to find new ways to hold interest. Esports has filled the gap for millions of viewers. Competitive gaming now draws global audiences for everything from football simulations like Madden and EA FC to fantasy titles unrelated to sports like League of Legends and Counter-Strike. These broadcasts bring the action and commentary around the clock, giving fans steady engagement rather than just having to show up Sunday, no matter how fun that may be. Esports World Cup Traditional leagues recognize the inherent potential with this and they're rolling out their own esports competitions. The NBA2K League and the ePremier League are examples of sports organizations creating digital extensions of their brands. The production quality is similar to any televised game, with commentators, analysts, and live reactions helping fans stay involved and interested. The strategy is reportedly working, with viewers tuning in to watch elite players compete in digital arenas. Interest is said to be growing as well. What started as small experiments has developed into a major industry where action on the field is now complemented by a virtual counterpart. The future of that relationship will be discussed at the upcoming New Global Sport Conference coming up this weekend on August 23-25 in Saudi Arabia, where leaders from sports, gaming, and esports will meet. Casey Wasserman, who is the head of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Olympic legend Michael Johnson will be among the attendees, along with Andrew Wilson of Electronic Arts and Ralf Reichert of the Esports World Cup Foun. Their focus will be on how both the real-life and on-line sides of this industry can grow together over the next three decades. Previous conferences have already led to collaborations, such as chess joining the Esports World Cup lineup. Momentum appears to be growing, so the possibility of more crossover deals is strong. Whether it is leagues continuing to back esports or broadcasts that blend both formats, digital competition is positioning itself as a greater part of the overall sports landscape. Read More!

Myles Garrett refuses to speak on 100 mph speeding citation: ‘Need you to ask a different question'

Myles Garrett intends to keep his 'personal life personal,' and that includes his latest speeding citation. When speaking to the media Wednesday, the star Browns defensive end declined to expand on a driving incident from earlier this month, when Strongsville police stopped him for going 100 mph in a 60 mph zone — his eighth citation for speeding since arriving in Cleveland in 2017. 'I'd honestly rather talk about football and this team than anything I'm doing off the field — other than the back to school event that I did the other day,' Garrett said, according to ProFootballTalk. AP The line of questioning didn't stop there as the six-time Pro Bowler was asked four separate times about the incident. 'People want to know a lot of things,' Garrett said. 'But I try to keep my personal life personal… I'd rather focus on this team when I can.' Advertisement When pressed again, the 29-year-old responded, 'I'm going to need you to ask a different question so I can focus on this team and not, you know, this headline you're trying to get out of these questions you're asking.' Garrett — five months removed from signing a massive four-year contract extension worth $123.5 million guaranteed — was stopped shortly after 2 a.m. on Aug. 9, per public records. Advertisement The incident transpired hours after the Browns' first preseason game against the Panthers in Charlotte. Garrett was involved in a scary car accident three years ago when his car flipped several times after leaving the Browns' practice facility in Berea, Ohio. The former first-round pick sustained 'minor' injuries and was taken to the hospital. 4 Myles Garrett has been cited for speeding eight times since arriving in Cleveland in 2017. AP Advertisement Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed earlier this month that Garrett's latest citation had been addressed, calling the matter 'extremely disappointing.' 'He needs to slow down for his safety and the safety of others,' Stefanski said. Garrett is entering his ninth season with the Browns, who are coming off a dreadful 3-14 campaign. Joe Flacco, on his second tour of Cleveland, will start at quarterback. 4 Myles Garrett has also made headlines over his love life as he's been linked to Olympian Chloe Kim. WireImage When the Browns take the field for their Week 1 opener against the Bengals next month, it remains to be seen if Garrett will have a special supporter in the stands. Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim made an appearance at training camp this month after stirring dating rumors with Garrett this past spring. They stepped out for the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo in May.
