Gujarat govt commissions six new check dams to boost irrigation across 30 villages

Hans India15-05-2025
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has taken a step toward improving irrigation infrastructure in the Gandhinagar district with the inauguration of six newly constructed check dams in Dahegam's Dharisana village.
The inauguration was led by Water Resources Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya, who also visited and personally inspected a key check dam built across the Khari River at a cost of Rs 2.33 crore. These projects are part of a broader initiative by the state to ensure adequate water availability for drinking and agriculture across rural areas.
Constructed at a total cost of Rs 18.07 crore, the six check dams have been built across the Meshwo and Khari rivers.
These structures are designed to store approximately 41.89 million cubic feet (MCFT) of water, benefiting over 350 hectares of farmland across more than 30 villages in Gandhinagar and Dahegam talukas.
During his address, Minister Bavaliya emphasised the state government's unwavering commitment to delivering water security in every corner of Gujarat.
The minister also shared future plans to expand the network of check dams, particularly in areas that face irrigation water shortages during the summer months.
In Gandhinagar district alone, 14 check dams have been built on the Sabarmati River, and four additional structures are being constructed on the Vatrak River to serve 10 nearby villages.
On the Meshwo River, one check dam is operational, two were inaugurated during this event, two more are under construction, and four additional dams are planned. Similarly, on the Khari River, three existing check dams have now been supplemented by four newly inaugurated ones, with plans underway to construct three more.
Once all projects are completed, the expanded infrastructure is expected to benefit more than 550 hectares of agricultural land and reach around 90 to 95 villages in the region.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Ahmedabad East MP Hasmukh Patel, Dahegam MLA Balrajsinh Chauhan, Gandhinagar District Panchayat President Shilpaben Patel, local government officials, and senior officers from the Water Resources Department, including Secretary P.C. Vyas and Chief Engineer M.D. Patel.

Stormy start to Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha session as monsoon havoc sparks heated debate

Shimla: The 12-day monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha began on a stormy note Monday, with a heated debate on the recent monsoon disaster that devastated parts of the hill state. The discussion, initiated by BJP legislators, saw sharp exchanges between leader of opposition Jairam Thakur and chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu over the govt's relief efforts in Mandi district, one of the worst-hit areas. Since June 20, the disaster has claimed at least 140 lives, left 37 missing, and caused estimated losses of Rs 2,194 crore. Raising questions over the state govt's restoration initiatives in the disaster-affected areas in Mandi district, including Seraj constituency, the leader of the opposition said only Rs 2 crore had been released so far, despite public works infrastructure suffering losses of Rs 200 crore and water supply schemes worth Rs 100 crore being disrupted. Despite over one and a half months since the June 30 monsoon disaster in Seraj constituency, which claimed 31 human lives, 500 families are either staying in relief camps or with relatives. Additionally, the roads have not been restored in his Seraj constituency, and the water and power supply has also been restored temporarily in many areas, he claimed. The leader of the opposition further accused the state govt of not disbursing Rs 787 crore sent by the central govt after the 2023 monsoon disaster. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo He also targeted the state govt for shifting the horticulture college from Thunag in Mandi to an unsafe place and also registering FIRs against 62 disaster-affected persons for protesting against revenue minister Jagat Singh Negi. Responding to the allegations levelled by the leader of the opposition, the CM said it was wrong to say that the state govt is doing nothing. He stated that Seraj constituency has been included under the central relief fund and the state govt has already released Rs 3 crore from its own funds. Sukhu also stated that there is no scarcity of food and other required items in the disaster-affected areas as the state govt directed the deputy commissioner to immediately provide food and PWD officials to initiate restoration work. Sukhu added that besides him, deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri, PWD minister, revenue minister, education ministers, and his other cabinet colleagues, as well as party MLAs, have been visiting disaster-affected areas to listen to public grievances and provide them relief. The CM also assured the leader of the opposition that he will sit with Thakur and work on all the schemes for the disaster-affected areas. He also mentioned that the state govt moved the horticulture college to Nachan at the request of students and their parents and that the PWD executive engineer was transferred from Mandi since he was delaying the restoration work. Dy CM Defends Govt Defending the state govt initiatives, deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri stated that the state govt issued clear instructions to the field officers that they should take instructions from the leader of the opposition since he is also the MLA of the disaster-affected Seraj constituency. He added that water supply schemes are being restored in Seraj constituency, rising above political lines with the best efforts from the state govt. Agnihotri said that his home district Una has sent 10,000 ration kits to Seraj constituency. He said that the leader of opposition met Union ministers, along with all BJP MPs from the state, but the state govt has not got any relief till date from the Centre. Obituary The legislative assembly paid tributes to Ganesh Dutt Bharwal, former legislator from Chintpurni assembly constituency in Una district, who passed away on July 20 at the age of 76 years. The CM and leader of the opposition Jairam Thakur also offered condolences to the family members of all those persons across the state during this monsoon season. State launches Shramashree to help returning migrant workers

Kolkata: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched the Shramashree scheme to help families of Bengali-speaking migrant labourers returning home after police excesses in BJP-governed states. Around 2,730 such people have returned to Bengal over the past several weeks since a drive in states like Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra — ostensibly to detain illegal Bangladeshi immigrants — ended up harassing thousands of migrant workers from Bengal. Families targeted in such drives and seeking refuge back home in Bengal will get a one-time grant of Rs 5,000 to cover travel costs and then a monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 till they get some employment (subject to a maximum time limit of a year). They would also get free ration under Khadya Sathi, Banerjee added, urging harassed migrants to return home if they wanted. More than 22 lakh migrant Bengali workers and their families stay outside the state but many are being forced to return because of this linguistic persecution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Contract mafia behind broken roads & sanitation woes, claim councillors in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: Shoddy sanitation, broken roads and a city left to rot — these are the results of a contract mafia having taken root in the city, the city councillors have alleged. The councillors, at a meeting with chief principal secretary to the CM Rajesh Khullar on Monday, said contractors deliberately underquote projects to win bids, grease palms once the deal is sealed and then slash manpower and material costs to claw back their losses. Khullar held two sessions — one with the city councillors and the other with the top officials of the govt agencies — at Haryana Institute of Public Administration. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon | Gold Rates Today in Gurgaon | Silver Rates Today in Gurgaon The councillors later said Khullar assured them the issues — pertaining to sanitation, stray cattle, roads, etc. — will be addressed by Sept 15. In the first session, Khullar interacted with the councillors of MCG, along with mayor Raj Rani Malhotra, and heard the main issues of their respective wards. He assured them chief minister Nayab Singh Saini is committed to resolving Gurgaon's problems and that positive results will be visible very soon. He emphasised the need for councillors' cooperation. The councillors alleged that contractors offer project rates below the official estimate and once the deal is secured, they pay out commissions to the MCG officials at multiple levels. To recover these costs, contractors reportedly cut corners. Councillors said the city continues to bear the brunt of this practice and pointed to deteriorating services in sanitation, road maintenance, desilting of drains and other projects. Ward 11 councillor Kuldeep Yadav said, "The contractors underbid the civic projects to secure contracts from MCG, only to later compromise on quality and manpower. For projects where they have to deploy 10 workers, they deploy only five just to save money. For example, if the project is estimated to cost Rs 100, the contractor will secure the project by offering to complete it for only Rs 70." "Then, the contractor will also spend 10-15% in commission to the officials at different levels. Such contractors, who underbid to secure contracts, should be blacklisted," he added. Ward number 25 councillor Anup Singh said, "At the special budget meeting of the House held in April, the councillors submitted a list of some of these contractors, who secure contracts below the project value and execute shoddy work. In my ward, for example, a drain desilting work was secured by the contractor at a cost of Rs 16 lakh, while the original estimation of the project was Rs 26 lakh. Consequently, he delivered poor service in desilting that drain. " Singh added, "After securing these projects by underbidding, they execute some work, click photos and submit it for proof. However, in reality, they compromise on the quality of the project." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
