Gujarat govt commissions six new check dams to boost irrigation across 30 villages
The inauguration was led by Water Resources Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya, who also visited and personally inspected a key check dam built across the Khari River at a cost of Rs 2.33 crore. These projects are part of a broader initiative by the state to ensure adequate water availability for drinking and agriculture across rural areas.
Constructed at a total cost of Rs 18.07 crore, the six check dams have been built across the Meshwo and Khari rivers.
These structures are designed to store approximately 41.89 million cubic feet (MCFT) of water, benefiting over 350 hectares of farmland across more than 30 villages in Gandhinagar and Dahegam talukas.
During his address, Minister Bavaliya emphasised the state government's unwavering commitment to delivering water security in every corner of Gujarat.
The minister also shared future plans to expand the network of check dams, particularly in areas that face irrigation water shortages during the summer months.
In Gandhinagar district alone, 14 check dams have been built on the Sabarmati River, and four additional structures are being constructed on the Vatrak River to serve 10 nearby villages.
On the Meshwo River, one check dam is operational, two were inaugurated during this event, two more are under construction, and four additional dams are planned. Similarly, on the Khari River, three existing check dams have now been supplemented by four newly inaugurated ones, with plans underway to construct three more.
Once all projects are completed, the expanded infrastructure is expected to benefit more than 550 hectares of agricultural land and reach around 90 to 95 villages in the region.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Ahmedabad East MP Hasmukh Patel, Dahegam MLA Balrajsinh Chauhan, Gandhinagar District Panchayat President Shilpaben Patel, local government officials, and senior officers from the Water Resources Department, including Secretary P.C. Vyas and Chief Engineer M.D. Patel.

Obituary The legislative assembly paid tributes to Ganesh Dutt Bharwal, former legislator from Chintpurni assembly constituency in Una district, who passed away on July 20 at the age of 76 years. State launches Shramashree to help returning migrant workers
Kolkata: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched the Shramashree scheme to help families of Bengali-speaking migrant labourers returning home after police excesses in BJP-governed states. Around 2,730 such people have returned to Bengal over the past several weeks since a drive in states like Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra — ostensibly to detain illegal Bangladeshi immigrants — ended up harassing thousands of migrant workers from Bengal. Families targeted in such drives and seeking refuge back home in Bengal will get a one-time grant of Rs 5,000 to cover travel costs and then a monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 till they get some employment (subject to a maximum time limit of a year). Contract mafia behind broken roads & sanitation woes, claim councillors in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: Shoddy sanitation, broken roads and a city left to rot — these are the results of a contract mafia having taken root in the city, the city councillors have alleged. The councillors, at a meeting with chief principal secretary to the CM Rajesh Khullar on Monday, said contractors deliberately underquote projects to win bids, grease palms once the deal is sealed and then slash manpower and material costs to claw back their losses. "Then, the contractor will also spend 10-15% in commission to the officials at different levels. Such contractors, who underbid to secure contracts, should be blacklisted," he added. Ward number 25 councillor Anup Singh said, "At the special budget meeting of the House held in April, the councillors submitted a list of some of these contractors, who secure contracts below the project value and execute shoddy work. In my ward, for example, a drain desilting work was secured by the contractor at a cost of Rs 16 lakh, while the original estimation of the project was Rs 26 lakh. Consequently, he delivered poor service in desilting that drain. " Singh added, "After securing these projects by underbidding, they execute some work, click photos and submit it for proof.
