VDE Americas and kWh Analytics Join Forces to Optimize Insurance Premiums for Solar Assets Designed for Hail Resiliency
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 17, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--VDE Americas, a global leader in technical advisory and catastrophic risk assessment services for the solar power industry, and kWh Analytics, a leading Climate Insurance provider that differentiates premiums based on renewable energy asset resiliency, have jointly launched a new assessment form that evaluates solar site hail vulnerability and protective measures. The launch coincides with the beginning of North America's hail season, which spans from April through September, giving solar developers and operators a timely resource to safeguard their assets during these high-risk months.
Multiple, high-profile hail losses have caused insurance challenges for solar assets, fueling the industry to adopt resilience measures, such as deploying thicker glass solar panels that are less prone to cracking. However, for insurance carriers to effectively assess risk mitigation, they need data.
To provide meaningful hail risk evaluation data, VDE Americas and kWh Analytics have jointly developed the Hail Stow and Risk Evaluation form. This easy-to-use assessment allows insurance underwriters and financiers to confirm and monitor hail defense functionality. The form also provides an option for insurers to connect with tracker manufacturers and independent engineers directly for project specifics.
Ultimately, projects that use this form and demonstrate the effectiveness of their resiliency efforts should receive insurance credits for doing so. The form and recommendations are informed by VDE's comprehensive best practices for hail defense, which include proactive solar panel stowing—tilting solar panels at extreme angles to minimize hail impact damage—sector-specific hail forecasting, and alert-based hail stow.
kWh Analytics' and VDE Americas' approach to risk modeling leverages radar-based weather data and equipment-specific hail resiliency characteristics to create a data-driven model that rewards resilient design and operational excellence. By incorporating reliable, site-specific hail risk data and equipment performance metrics, this approach creates a more precise risk assessment framework that benefits proactive solar owners and operators. "Our evidence-based premium differentiation rewards projects with proven hail defense strategies, sending an insurance price signal to the industry and incentivizing the design, construction, and operation of more resilient solar assets," said Nicole Thompson, Senior Manager of Data Science at kWh Analytics.
The form works alongside VDE Americas' Hail Risk Intelligence suite to address solar projects' vulnerabilities to hail. The evaluation provides insurers with standardized criteria to assess hail readiness, while the Intelligence suite equips operators with practical tools—including hail risk engineering reports, a Hail Risk Atlas with ArcGIS mapping, technical guidance for stow procedures, and forensic analysis capabilities. Together, these resources help solar projects both strengthen their resilience against hail damage and demonstrate resilience to insurers.
"Safeguarding energy assets against severe weather risk is critical to maintaining grid stability across the United States," said Brian Grenko, CEO and President of VDE Americas. "This collaboration transforms how the industry approaches hail risk by establishing clear, actionable guidelines for resilient design and operations, plus an incentive to demonstrate hail defenses are in place and working as expected."

Esri Launches ArcGIS for Autodesk Forma, Continuing its Partnership to Bring Spatial Data to AECO Industry
Redlands, Calif., United States: Esri, the global leader in geographic information system (GIS) technology and location intelligence, today released ArcGIS for Autodesk Forma®. Part of a longstanding partnership with Autodesk®, this new integration introduces Esri's authoritative geospatial reference data into Autodesk Forma to transform design and planning for architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) professionals. ArcGIS for Autodesk Forma will allow more seamless collaboration by providing users with a single design environment without switching between platforms. 'We're excited to strengthen our partnership with Autodesk in creating a more cohesive project experience for the AECO industry,' said Kathleen Kewley, Esri director for AEC global business development. 'This will improve operational efficiency and drive better business outcomes by bringing Esri's rich collection of data into Autodesk Forma.' ArcGIS for Autodesk Forma will serve as an Autodesk extension, incorporating geographic data and geospatial services that enable greater analytics and insights into Autodesk offerings. With ArcGIS as a key part of design and construction, professionals will have deeper, more holistic understanding of projects connected to the social, built, and natural worlds. The new application elevates every design with ArcGIS content, empowering GIS and non-GIS specialists with access to maps, layers, and other spatial data within Forma. Included are Esri's ArcGIS basemaps and select data layers from ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World—the foremost collection of globally sourced geographic information. 'AECO professionals who use Autodesk Forma will now be able to quickly update projects with the most up-to-date GIS data available,' said Eric DesRoche, director of infrastructure business strategy at Autodesk. 'With access to the most accurate and current geographic information during the conceptual design stage, users can design with location in mind and ultimately deliver projects that are more sustainable, resilient and can better support local communities.' The combination of GIS and building information model (BIM) technologies during early design and planning stages will also bring teams advanced understanding and visualization of projects. This will enable them to more effectively reduce costs and timelines. ArcGIS for Autodesk Forma streamlines the sharing of designs enriched with GIS data from Autodesk Forma to Autodesk Revit®and other Autodesk solutions. 'Our augmented reality technology hinges on visualizations that function as counterparts to the physical world, so the seamless use of public and proprietary spatial data is critical for customers,' said Dana Chermesh-Reshef, inCitu founder and CEO. 'ArcGIS for Autodesk Forma's interface is easy to use and responsive, while accessing data is intuitive for AECO professionals with even limited to no GIS experience.'
