As part of the Marcos administration's push for healthier lifestyle among youth, the Department of Health rolled out Monday health packages and medical services during the opening of Brigada Eskwela 2025, recognizing the vital role of schools in supporting student well-being.
Led by Health Secretary Ted Herbosa, the DOH honored 83 schools nationwide as "Health Champions" during the launch at Bacacay East Central School in Albay.
The schools received "Bawat Bata Malusog" (Every Child Healthy) packages, which include essential health tools such as blood pressure monitors, weighing scales, first aid kits, and other clinic supplies.
Additional kits tailored for teachers' self-care and physical activity were given to Last Mile Schools.
The DOH also distributed disaster readiness kits to bolster emergency preparedness.
The Health Department also provided "Bawat Bata Mahalaga" (Every Child is Important) kits to Jamorawon National High School, San Juan Integrated School, Rinconada National Technical Vocational School, and Fulgueras Elementary School.
As the Department of Education (DepEd) prepares school facilities for the upcoming academic year, the DOH is working in parallel to ensure the health of teachers and school staff.
Free services provided include medical consultations, vaccinations, X-rays, laboratory tests, HIV screening, mental health services, family planning, deworming, cancer education, and sessions on health literacy covering topics such as nutrition, physical activity, environmental health, substance use prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and violence and injury prevention.
'Ang ating suportang pangkalusugan sa ating mga paaralan ay paghubog na rin natin sa mas malusog na bagong henerasyon. Mahalagang hindi lang ang gusali ng paaralan ang inihahanda, kundi pati ang kalusugan ng mga guro at school personnel na siyang nangangasiwa ng eskwelahan kung saan namamalagi ang kabataan,' said Secretary Teodoro Herbosa.
(Our health support for schools is also our way of shaping a healthier new generation. It's important not only to prepare school buildings, but also the health of teachers and personnel who manage the environment where our youth spend much of their time.)
Since the launch of the DOH's Healthy Learning Institutions program in 2022, it has reached 1,457 schools across 55 provinces and cities nationwide. The initiative aims to help schools create environments that nurture the health of both learners and educators.
DOH noted that these effort aligns with the Universal Health Care Law, which recognizes schools as key venues for promoting the health of young people and education sector employees. —Sherylin Untalan/AOL, GMA Integrated News

Over 9,000 POGO workers remain at large in PH — PAOCC

Months since POGOs were banned in the country, more than 9,000 former Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) workers remain at large in the Philippines, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) said Monday. 'So, due to the overcrowding, enforcement actions against the estimated 9,000 — ito po po yung kailangan hulihin natin. These are more than 9,000 illegal foreign workers — have been temporarily suspended,' PAOCC executive director Gilbert Cruz said during the last hearing of the House Quad Committee (QuadComm). (So, due to the overcrowding, enforcement actions against the estimated 9,000 — these are the ones we need to apprehend — have been temporarily suspended. These are more than 9,000 illegal foreign workers.) According to Cruz, their operations were temporarily suspended due to overcrowding at the PAOCC's detention facility in Pasay City. He said PAOCC conducted Cruz said there are currently over 600 foreigners detained at the facility. 'Many detainees still cannot be deported due to missing passports. (Many detainees still cannot be deported due to missing passports. This is our problem, sir. Those without passports, because many of the foreign nationals who worked in POGOs had their passports taken from them, are now scattered all over the Philippines.) Cruz said the detainees have been diagnosed with tuberculosis, hepatitis B, respiratory infections, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). 'Actually, sir, dito po kami nalulumpo. Just three weeks ago, nagpa-cremate po tayo ng isang HIV victim,' Cruz said. (Actually, sir, this is where we are paralyzed. Just three weeks ago, we had to cremate an HIV victim.) PAOCC spends P2 million every month for the detainee's food, healthcare, and medical needs, according to the executive director. He recommended the creation of a centralized database for monitoring illegal operations and sharing real-time intelligence. He said local government units should also be trained and equipped to detect hidden POGOs following their shift to guerilla operations. Aside from this, he said the deportation process must also be improved through close coordination with foreign embassies while regional cooperation must be pursued more actively. 'Lastly, a nationwide public information campaign is needed to raise awareness about illegal offshore gaming operations and scam operations. As well as the role of community reporting in stopping these activities,' Cruz said. 'This is not only about removing illegal businesses but also about protecting the country's integrity. ensuring public safety, and demonstrating to the world that the Philippines will not be a safe haven for crime,' he added. Cruz said authorities arrested 750 foreign nationals in 10 major raids in 2025. Due to their operations, Cruz said some POGOs moved their operations to the Visayas and Mindanao as well as Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. He said there are also reports that some relocated to Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and the Republic of Vanuatu. President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. banned all POGOs in the country effective on July 22, 2024 after raids against illegal POGOs revealed equipment used for torture, love scams, and other crimes. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), HIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. It can be transmitted through an exchange of body fluids, including blood, breast milk, semen, and vaginal secretions. It is an interconnected system of health facilities, community-based and non-governmental organizations, and civil society groups that helps People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in get the necessary services they need. 'The network supports psychosocial interventions, treatment adherence counseling, and community mobilization, especially in underserved and high-risk populations,' the LGU said. Together with AIDS Support House (HASH), the Quezon City Sangguniang Kabataan launched Hakdaw Kabataan, a program that trains youth leaders to be Community-Based HIV Screening Motivators that raise HIV awareness. 'In 2024, the program trained over 60 young volunteers and tested an impressive 1,940 individuals in the same year,' the Quezon City LGU said. 'With the significant increase of cases among ages 15 to 24, we make sure that all of them are receiving the treatment they need in our city's Social Hygiene Clinics,' Quezon Mayor Joy Belmonte said. Under the 'Bahagi Ka ng Solusyon' campaign, Quezon City residents were also called to actively participate in HIV and AIDS prevention. 'You are not just the most affected, you are also our most powerful weapon. By stepping up, speaking out, and getting tested, you are helping build a healthier, more livable, and stigma-free Quezon City,' Belmonte said. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
