The Manning family, a pillar of New Orleans, has been a fixture for nearly five decades since their patriarch, Archie Manning, was drafted to the Saints. In recognition of their unwavering dedication to serving children in the community, Children's Hospital New Orleans was honored with a name change to Manning Family Children's during the Louisiana Legacy Gala on Wednesday night.
One of the primary goal of the hospital is its unwavering commitment to never turning away children in need. Last year alone, the hospital treated an impressive 585,000 children. Following the announcement of this remarkable achievement, Cooper Manning, the father of Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, shared his personal experience of how the hospital provided exceptional care for his son during a press conference.
"I can tell you Arch spent a lot of time at Children's Hospital, and I was there taking him to get stitches. And we've spent a lot of time here," Cooper said, jokingly. "Children's Hospital is right down the street from us, and Arch is sad he couldn't be here tonight."
Archie Manning the patriarch of the family added, "I can speak on behalf of my entire family. It's very hard to put into words. To have a hospital named after you, this is not like making second-team All-SEC or anything like that. We just have such admiration for this hospital and the people and the leadership. For them to do this for our family, it's one of the greatest things that's happened in my life."
Archie then went on to discuss how the hospital naming honor surpasses all the football honors he received. The Manning family is no strangers to the healthcare sector. In fact, Peyton Manning Hospital in Indianapolis is named after the legendary Colt's Hall of Famer, Peyton Manning. On the other hand, Eli Manning has his eponymous clinics in Jackson, Mississippi, known as the Eli Manning Children's Clinics.

Sammy Knight's 91-yard interception return is the Saints Play of the Day

We're going back to 1998's New Orleans Saints matchup with the Minnesota Vikings for Day 91 in our Saints Play of the Day countdown. This game had some wild moments -- we already highlighted Aaron Craver's controversial 100-yard kick return touchdown in this same series. But today, we're focusing on one of the best plays of Sammy Knight's career. The second-year safety fought to rally his team in the fourth quarter by intercepting Vikings quarterback Brad Johnson for the second time that afternoon. His first takeaway, from inside New Orleans' own end zone, prevented a sure Minnesota touchdown early on. This time, Knight took the ball away from deep in Saints territory and ran 91 yards to score a touchdown of his own. He initially bobbled the catch before securing it and taking off with Cris Carter in tight pursuit. The future Hall of Famer couldn't bring Knight down in the open field, though, and Knight pulled off the big play. You can see it all for yourself here. Advertisement Doug Brien kicked the tying extra point, giving the team a chance. They just couldn't seal the deal. Facing a 31-24 deficit on their final possession, the Saints offense initially picked up 13 yards on a Billy Joe Tolliver pass, then Craver ran for 7 more. But that's where their luck ran out. Tolliver's next pass fell incomplete. He gained just 2 yards on the next completion, then ran for a yard on fourth-and-short. A 9-yard completion was wiped out by a 10-yard penalty on the next play, and then Tolliver took three sacks on second, third, and fourth down, losing 30 yards. Still, the Saints never would've had a chance in this one if not for Knight. His efforts deserve to be remembered. The longest pass of Archie Manning's career is the Saints Play of the Day

The longest pass of Archie Manning's career is the Saints Play of the Day There are 85 days left to count down until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season, which makes the longest pass of Archie Manning's career the Saints Play of the Day. Manning lobbed an 85-yard toss to Wes Chandler back in 1979, setting up a much-needed touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers. You can see it for yourself here. Chandler would have scored on the play if not for a horse-collar tackle, which flung him out of bounds and injured his knee. But he returned to complete the 16-game season and ended up winning his first Pro Bowl appearance that season. As for this game? Both rivals entered the field needing their first win of the season, and Manning put on a clinic to get it done -- he completed 20 of 28 passes for 355 yards and two scores, including a 5-yard strike to Chandler earlier in the game. New Orleans ended the year at 8-8 and second-place in the old NFC West, their best record in the franchise's history to that point. It's just a shame they couldn't sustain that success. The next season saw head coach Dick Nolan fired after an 0-12 ugly start, and by 1982 both Chandler and Manning would be traded to other teams as the Saints attempted to rebuild. The road ahead was bleak, but in this moment, both Manning and Chandler proved they could make a big play when their team needed it.

Saints sign Cam Akers, adding more competition to their backfield

Saints sign Cam Akers, adding more competition to their backfield Akers won a Super Bowl with the Rams but is still looking for the right team fit The New Orleans Saints have officially signed veteran running back Cam Akers. This was initially reported by Nick Underhill of before being confirmed on the NFL transaction wire. After reportedly showing interest in running back Nick Chubb before being signed by the Houston Texans, the Saints brought in Akers for a tryout at minicamp this week. Akers, who turns just 26 on June 22, will be with his fourth team in the last three years. After a 2nd Team All-ACC selection with the Florida State Seminoles, Akers was selected in Round 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Despite missing four games and sharing backfield snaps as a rookie, Akers led the Rams with 625 rushing yards. He'd suffer an Achilles injury in 2021 that limited him to only one regular season game. However, Akers returned in time for the playoffs to pick up 248 yards from scrimmage in four games on the way to the Rams Super Bowl LVI championship. Akers would rebound from the Achilles in 2022 to lead the Rams with 786 yards on the ground and 7 scores, both of which would be a career best. Los Angeles would trade Akers to the Minnesota Vikings early into the following season, where he'd pick up only 138 yards in six games before landing on injured reserve. He signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans during the 2024 offseason. After just 147 yards over five contests, the Texans traded him back to Minnesota. In his second stint with the Vikings, Akers ran for 297 yards in the last 12 games of last year. Over his five years in the NFL, Akers has averaged four yards per carry while picking up 2,025 rushing yards. He's added 388 more as a receiver on 52 catches and has scored a total of 17 touchdowns. Akers has been hampered by injuries and never was able to secure a featured backfield role. However, he has excellent power between the tackles and good burst into the second level of a defense. The addition of Cam Akers adds to the competition in the New Orleans backfield. Alvin Kamara will continue to be the team's featured weapon. Behind him, the often-injured Kendre Miller and 2024 veteran pickup Clyde Edwards-Helaire haven't been able to provide viable threats. The Saints also added Kansas running back Devin Neal in Round 6 of this year's draft along with Delaware running back Marcus Yarns as an undrafted rookie.
