Boston Celtics jersey history No. 21 - Gary Philips (1961-62)
The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history.
To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.

And for today's article, we will continue with the sixth of nine people to wear the No. 21, Boston guard alum Gary Phillips. After ending his college career at Houston, Phillips was picked up with the ninth overall selection of the 1961 NBA draft by the Celtics.
The Quincy, Illinois native would play the first season of his pro career with Boston before he was dealt to the (then) San Francisco (now, Golden State) Warriors in 1962.
During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Phillips wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 4.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game.

Cooper Flagg draws comparison to LeBron James by former NBA champion Projected No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg is a highly-touted prospect entering the 2025 NBA draft, and the National College Player of the Year recently earned a comparison to LeBron James. Flagg led Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be named a consensus first-team All-American. The 18-year-old has drawn comparisons to the likes of Grant Hill, Kawhi Leonard and Jayson Tatum. Former 12-year NBA veteran and champion Brian Scalabrine, speaking Tuesday on the "Dan Patrick Show," said Flagg reminds him of James based on how he processes the game mentally. Scalabrine revealed that he previously spent time training Flagg when he was entering high school in Maine. He was impressed with how quickly he was able to add new skill sets to his game at such a young age and how he still has that trait now, as he is on the verge of entering the NBA. I think it is LeBron James without having to be 260 pounds and a freight train. Cooper Flagg is a supercomputer. Everything you tell him, within 24 hours, he figured it out. The next time you tell him something else, (he figures it out). ... I've been around a lot of players. I've been around Hall of Fame players, I've never met someone who can just pick up things at such a high rate. When people talk about NBA players (not making it), a lot of it has to do with their computer and processor. He just processes on a rate that I've never seen before, so I'm only assuming that it's like LeBron James. Flagg established himself as the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick because of his size, athleticism and ability to affect games on both ends of the court. Former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski even called him the best freshman to ever play with the Blue Devils. The 6-foot-8 forward is expected to join the Dallas Mavericks on June 25 after reportedly meeting with the organization this week. He isn't expected to work out with any other teams, likely after receiving word that the team would select him with the first pick. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said last month that he believes the team is an excellent situation for Flagg, with their mixture of established veterans and up-and-coming players. He believes Flagg will be able to step in and make an immediate contribution. After trading away cornerstone Luka Dončić, the Mavericks hope Flagg can step in and be their long-term solution. Should Flagg indeed hear his name called first, the ACC Freshman of the Year will become the sixth Blue Devil to be selected as the top pick.

The San Antonio Spurs, unless they make a trade, will pick second, 14th, and 38th in the 2025 NBA Draft. Ever since the Spurs shot up the lottery, they have been linked to Rutgers' standout Dylan Harper with the second pick, and the 14th pick will either be dangled in trades or used to add a depth piece. Advertisement As the Spurs seem to take a step back from the Kevin Durant trade pursuit, the likelihood that they end up making a selection late in the lottery grows, and they have a clear area of need: backup center. Aside from Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs do not have a center on a guaranteed contract for next season, and Charles Bassey and Sandro Mamukelashvili have been unreliable during their NBA careers. With solid options in the draft like Derik Queen, Maxime Raynaud, Thomas Sorber, and perhaps even Khamam Maluach, all possibilities, a recent mock draft by ESPN has the Spurs drafting French standout Joan Beringer, who is currently playing in the Slovenian League. Beringer is very, very raw, but he is already a solid defender and excellent lob threat. While he can't space the floor or handle the ball, he vacuums up rebounds and can swat shots. Perhaps, in time, he could share the floor with Victor Wembanyama and floor spacers/facilitators who can find him under the basket for easy dunks. Advertisement Between Zach Collins in San Antonio and Rudy Gobert in the Olympics, Wembanyama has not been able to find his stride while playing with another big man, so Beringer will likely end up being his backup. Considering his defensive upside, that works out well. If he shares the court with scorers like Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie, Dylan Harper, or even Devin Vassell, he will be able to thrive on defense and stay out of the way on offense, giving him a role from day one. In the ABA League, Beringer averaged 4.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 18 minutes per game. He is not an efficient scorer yet, but as a true seven-footer, he should be able to find easy points in the paint, although his developmental timeline leaves a lot to be desired. Among many fans and analysts, it seems imminent that the San Antonio Spurs will strike a trade for an All-Star this offseason. Equipped with stars Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, on top of tons of depth and tradeable assets, the Spurs seem primed to make a big splash to leapfrog the Western Conference. Advertisement One of the bigger, less surprising names on the block is Kevin Durant. Rumors have been flying rampant about a potential Durant to San Antonio deal. With recent reporting that the Spurs have been radio silent in discussions with the Phoenix Suns over the past 48 hours, it seems unlikely that a deal will be struck there. According to ClutchPoint's Brett Siegel, the Spurs could be in the running for a pair of Finals MVPs. "Two names stand out as superstar targets for the Spurs outside of Kevin Durant: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown." Siegel reported on X. "If San Antonio holds off on pursuing Durant, these will be the two stars to keep an eye on for San Antonio moving forward." A deal for Antetokounmpo has long been rumored after back-to-back disappointing postseasons for the Milwaukee Bucks. The real surprise in this report is Jaylen Brown. Advertisement Just a year ago, Brown won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in Boston's decisive 4-1 series victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Brown has spent the entirety of his nine-year NBA career in Boston. He has averaged over 20 points per game in each of the last six seasons, with his highest mark being 26.6 points per game in 2023. Brown's playmaking took a leap this year, averaging a career-high 4.5 assists per game, to go along with 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. With Jayson Tatum out for likely the entirety of next season after rupturing his Achilles in the playoffs, Boston could look to move Brown for some long-term help and salary relief. Brown is owed $236 million over the next four seasons. Advertisement On the court, Brown would slide in nicely next to Wembanyama, Fox, and Stephon Castle. He likely wouldn't need to take the 17.7 field goal attempts per game he took this season, but his shot diet could be a bit easier. Brown shot a career-low 32.4 percent from three this year on 5.7 attempts per game. As a do-it-all wing, Brown can bring scoring, defense, and newly-found playmaking to the Spurs lineup.
