Anwar Attends Manchester United, ASEAN All-Stars Match At Bukit Jalil

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took time off from his packed schedule to witness the much-anticipated post-season friendly match between English football powerhouse Manchester United and the ASEAN All-Stars at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here tonight.
Anwar's presence added a touch of excitement to the match, known as the Maybank Challenge Cup, which drew over 72,500 fans from not only Malaysia but also across the region.
Anwar, a Manchester United fan, arrived at the stadium donning the ASEAN All-Stars jersey with a Manchester United jacket layered on top as a gesture of support for both his favourite club and regional football.

Accompanied by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the Prime Minister greeted the starting eleven players from both teams on the pitch before the kick-off, further adding to the ceremonial importance of the occasion.
Anwar also received a mock cheque for RM1 million from ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) president Major General Khiev Sameth, presented to Yayasan Al-Sultan Abdullah (YASA).
He then enjoyed the match as the Red Devils' stars, including Andre Onana, Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund, Carlos Casemiro, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes, put on a spirited performance under the guidance of head coach Ruben Amorim.
The ASEAN All-Stars, comprising players from AFF member countries, including Australia, were coached by South Korean tactician Kim Sang Sik, who recently led Vietnam to victory in the ASEAN Championship, and captained by Harimau Malaya's naturalised striker Sergio Aguero.
ASEAN All-Stars stunned Manchester United with a 1-0 victory, thanks to a 72nd-minute goal from Myanmar's Maung Maung Lwin, which added to Manchester United's frustrations following a disappointing season.
Following the final whistle, Anwar presented medals and the trophy to the players.

Sancho to leave Chelsea after loan spell
LONDON: Chelsea have rejected the chance to sign Jadon Sancho permanently from Manchester United after the winger failed to agree personal terms at Stamford Bridge, reports said Tuesday. The 25-year-old joined Chelsea on loan in August last year in a deal that featured an obligation to buy him for up to £25 million (US$34 million). The Athletic reported that the club and Sancho had failed to agree a deal and Chelsea must now pay a £5 million penalty charge to United. Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League, with Sancho scoring the third goal in last week's 4-1 win against Real Betis. But the England international has had an inconsistent season, scoring just five times and making 10 assists in 41 appearances for Chelsea. He scored just one Premier League goal after early December. When asked about Sancho's future following last week's Conference League victory in Poland, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: "From now on we are going to sit with the club and decide what happens for next year." Sancho, whose contract at United runs until 2026, will return to Old Trafford. The club have an option to extend the deal by a further year. The forward joined United from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million (US$98 million) in 2021 but failed to live up to his price tag. After a quiet first year for Arne Slot in the transfer market, the Reds have moved quickly to back the Dutchman heavily this summer. The darling of German football, Wirtz looks set to smash the Premier League transfer record should he get his wish of a dream move to Anfield. Liverpool have reportedly had a bid worth up to £109 million ($147 million) rebuffed as Leverkusen hold out for a £125 million fee. United have already added Matheus Cunha to bolster a misfiring forward line. Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting Lisbon) A remarkable 54-goal season for Sporting has made the Swede a target for a series of clubs seeking more firepower. Arsenal have been strongly linked with bringing Gyokeres back to England as Mikel Arteta seeks a clinical finisher to end the Gunners' five-year trophy drought. The 26-year-old has a 100 million euro (£84 million) buyout clause in his Sporting contract, but it is expected the Portuguese champions would settle for around 70 million euros. Despite six goals in eight Champions League games, there are doubts over Gyokeres' ability to transfer his prolific form in Portugal to the Premier League. He joined Sporting just two years ago from English second tier side Coventry after failing to make the grade at Brighton. Arsenal also have a long-standing interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, while Newcastle's Alexander Isak appears an unattainable target after the Magpies qualified for the Champions League.
