S&P/TSX composite index closes up as gold rises, U.S. markets also higher
TORONTO - Canada's main stock index pushed to another record close on Thursday, helped by a rise in the price of gold, while U.S. markets also closed higher after mixed trading earlier in the day. The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 91.59 points at 26,615.75 in broad gains that included telecoms, financials and health care, while tech and base metal stocks were down. The market has been on a fairly steady climb since early April when U.S. tariff plans rattled markets globally and helped send gold prices soaring, which in turn has helped the TSX, said John Zechner, chairman and lead equity manager at J. Zechner Associates. 'I think people lose sight of the fact how important the gold stocks are in our index now,' he said, noting the sector makes up about 13 per cent of the index. Other sectors like financials and energy haven't been performing that well but gold stocks have benefited from the price of the metal climbing from around US$2,600 an ounce at the start of the year to over US$3,300 in recent weeks. 'It's really those gold stocks that carry the day.' Gold rose again Thursday, with the August contract up US$58.70 at US$3,402.40 an ounce, a day after lower-than-expected inflation data out of the U.S. pushed down the U.S. dollar because there was less need for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. 'It's playing that correlation perfectly,' said Zechner. 'The trade-weighted U.S. dollar is getting hit hard today, and gold just, you know, surged on that again.' The rise helped push Barrick Mining Corp. up nearly three per cent, Lundin Gold Inc. up 6.4 per cent and Kinross Gold Corp. up 1.4 per cent. Equinox Gold was, however, down 5.7 per cent after raising its cost guidance and notifying of slower-than-planned production at its Greenstone gold mine in Ontario. New York markets had been mixed earlier in the day but closed higher. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 101.85 points at 42,967.62. The S&P 500 index was up 23.02 points at 6,045.26, while the Nasdaq composite was up 46.61 points at 19,662.48. Updates on trade talks, which have helped drive market sentiment in recent weeks, were more scant Thursday. Investors will be looking to the G7 meeting in Alberta early next week for any signs of progress, said Zechner. 'They're not doing a communique or anything like that, it's just, you know, how much will Trump stir up relative to the other guys, and what will come out of that.' The Canadian dollar also benefited from a weakening U.S. currency, trading for 73.46 cents US compared with 73.18 cents US on Wednesday. The July crude oil contract was down 11 cents US at US$68.04 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was down two cents US at US$3.49 per mmBTU. The July copper contract was up three cents US at US$4.84 a pound. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 12, 2025. Companies in this story: (TSX:GSPTSE, TSX:CADUSD)

Are Robots The Answer To China's Aged Care Crisis? Beijing Launches Massive Trial To Test If Machines Can Cook, Clean And Console The Elderly
Are robots the solution to China's growing aged care problem? The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced a large-scale trial program to test whether intelligent machines can provide not just physical assistance, but also emotional support for its expanding senior population. What Happened: The ministry has invited private companies with proven track records in elder care to apply for the initiative. Firms must have robust environmental, credit, and safety records to qualify. Selected participants must develop at least 200 robots and deploy them across 20 test sites within two years of approval. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — The robots will be evaluated on a wide range of abilities, including cooking, cleaning, and fall prevention, to feeding, lifting, and assisting with going to the toilet, and outdoor mobility. In addition to physical support, the Ministry has also called for building machines capable of "anti-wandering and anti-falling" features for dementia patients and tools that can identify early symptoms of cognitive decline. They are also looking for robots that can hold conversations in various dialects, read books and newspapers, and even place video calls to family members. Described as "intelligent communication companion service robots," these machines are expected to counter loneliness and act as possible substitutes for pets. Why It Matters: While the ministry does not explicitly call for humanoid design, the features described are most closely associated with human caregiving. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, in an article for China's cyberspace authority in 2022, floated an idea somewhat similar to what the ministry is looking for: 'Perhaps in less than a decade, people will be able to buy a robot for their parents as a birthday gift,' he wrote, referring to Tesla's humanoid robots currently in month, Musk shared his belief that humanoid robots will start impacting countries' GDPs in "4-5 years." He weighed in on the massive amounts of power humanoid robots will require to function to the height of their capabilities. Musk has also asserted that Optimus, his company's humanoid robot, is capable of learning tasks simply by watching YouTube videos, much like humans can. Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang has suggested that Optimus might be the first humanoid robot to reach both mass production and advanced technical capability. "I think this is likely to be the next multi-trillion-dollar industry," he said. Recently, Nvidia unveiled Isaac GR00T, labeled as "the world's first open, fully customizable foundation model for humanoid robots, enabling generalized reasoning and skill development." Should You Buy Cenovus Energy While It's Below $20?
Written by Andrew Walker at The Motley Fool Canada Cenovus Energy (TSX:CVE) picked up a new tailwind in the past two months. Investors who missed the bounce are wondering if CVE stock is still undervalued and good to buy for a self-directed Tax-Free Savings Account or Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) portfolio focused on contrarian picks. Cenovus trades near $19 per share at the time of writing. The stock was as low as $15 two months ago, but is still way off the $28 it fetched last summer. Weak oil prices are largely to blame for the decline in the stock over the past year. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil trades near US$67 per barrel at the time of writing. It is off the 2025 low around US$57, but is still down from the US$80 it reached last year. The recent rally is probably due to oil traders betting on a tariff deal between the United States and China. Positive news could save China's struggling economy from plunging into a deeper slump and might help avoid a recession in the U.S., where tariffs are having an impact on sentiment and consumption. The two countries are the largest oil consumers, so the health of these giant economies has a significant impact on the market. Weakness in the oil market last year arose as investors worried about a prolonged struggling Chinese economy along with rising oil supply from non-OPEC producers, including the United States and Canada. Analysts broadly expect the market to remain oversupplied into 2026. A major geopolitical disruption in the Middle East, however, could quickly change the outlook. Cenovus reported decent Q1 2025 financial results despite the challenging market conditions. Total upstream production came in at 818,900 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE/d) compared to 800,900 in the same period last year. Cenovus produces oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas. It has oil sands, conventional oil, and offshore oil assets, along with extensive natural gas properties. The company also owns refining operations that turn crude oil into gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and other retail products. Total throughput in these downstream operations rose to 665,400 barrels per day (bbls/d) compared to 655,200 in Q1 2024. Net earnings, however, slipped from $1.2 billion in Q1 2024 to $859 million, largely due to weak oil prices. Management still has an upbeat outlook and the board just raised the annualized dividend by 11% to $0.80. Cenovus has a number of growth projects on the go that will boost production in the next few years, with WTI oil at US$45 or higher as the benchmark for the new assets to be profitable. Narrows Lake is expected to deliver first oil in Q3 2025. Sunrise is also making good progress. The Foster Creek optimization project is 75% complete and is on track to go into operation in 2026. In the offshore segment, the West White Rose project is scheduled for installation and commissioning later this year. This major project is now 90% complete and is expected to begin production in Q2 2026. Investors who buy CVE stock at the current price can get a dividend yield of 4.2%. Near-term volatility should be expected in the energy market. In fact, it wouldn't be a surprise to see WTI slip back to the US$60 mark before the end of the year, given the current supply outlook. That being said, CVE already trades at a reasonable level, and production should rise in the next couple of years. You get paid a decent dividend yield to ride out the turbulence. A supply shock or positive news on trade deals could trigger a move above US$70 for WTI, which would likely give the share price a nice boost.
