JBVNL steps up for safe power supply

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) has started wrapping 3,000 electric poles, located along the designated Muharram procession routes falling in densely populated and high-traffic zones, with protective plastic coverings to minimise the risk of power-related accidents.
Electrical superintending engineer with the JBVNL (Ranchi Zone), D N Sahu, said, "The step is being taken to avoid any accidental contact between participants and electric poles."
The JBVNL appealed to public and Muharram committees to follow safety protocols like limits on the height of 'tazias' and sound systems mounted on vehicles. Further, people should neither sit atop buses or tall vehicles, nor add heights by placing structures on vehicles that could violate the permissible height and risk contact with overhead power lines.
All organising committees are expected to deploy an adequate number of volunteers to prevent accidents resulting from negligence or unauthorised activity during processions. The public has also been urged not to touch or make any form of contact with electric poles, wires, or equipment.

Margao: While Goa projects itself as a premier tourist destination, recent data tabled in the state legislative assembly in its recently concluded-session revealed a troubling urban reality affecting South Goa. Even as a new census is overdue, data from the 2011 census reveals that 26,850 people live in slum conditions across three municipalities — Mormugao, Ponda, and Margao. The most shocking statistics come from Mormugao, where more than one in every four residents — or 25.7% — lives in slum conditions. Of the port town's 94,393 residents, 24,227 are housed in 10 distinct slum areas, including Baina, Mangor Hill, Khariwada, Jetty, Gandhinagar, New Vaddem, Shantinagar, and Non-Mon. Ponda presents a more manageable but still concerning picture. With 982 residents living in two slum settlements — Shantinagar and Panditwada — the town has a 4.3% slum population. However, the conditions reveal severe overcrowding, particularly in Shantinagar, where 787 people are crammed into just 35 households, an average of 22 residents per household. Panditwada, with 195 residents in 30 households, fares slightly better with 23 latrines and 5km of paved roads, but still lacks proper drainage. As for Margao, the data reveals that Moti Dongor's 866 residents across 402 households have no pit latrines but rely on other unspecified sanitation arrangements, with just 11 public water points and 0.5km of paved roads. Nevertheless, electricity connectivity shows relatively better coverage across all three towns, with most households having domestic connections. A committee was constituted in Jan 2025 to assess rehabilitation options for Moti Dongor. Official records reveal that the committee held meetings in April and July. However, months later, the committee is 'awaiting information from line departments'. Significantly, while govt budgeted copious amounts for slum redevelopment over the last three years — Rs 5 crore for 2023-24, Rs 3 crore for 2024-25, and Rs 5 crore for 2025-26, data shows there was 'nil' expenditure across this period. Freight Train Coupling Breaks Near Akola, Rail Traffic Disrupted For 3 Hours
1 2 Akola: A major railway accident was averted near Borgaon Manju railway station in Akola district on Sunday evening when the coupling of a freight train travelling from Nagpur to Mumbai split into two. Several wagons along with the guard were left behind, while the engine with the remaining wagons moved ahead. The alertness of loco pilot immediately controlled the speed of the train, thereby preventing a possible disaster. Due to the breakdown, train traffic on the Nagpur-Bhusawal-Mumbai route came to a complete halt. Both the up and down lines were blocked for nearly three hours. Several passenger trains including the Vande Bharat Express were affected. Some trains were halted at nearby stations, while others were diverted through alternative routes. Hundreds of passengers faced delays and inconvenience, as train were running several hours late. According to railway sources, the freight train was on its way from Murtijapur to Akola when the wagons detached near pole no. 599/12, close to Borgaon Manju station. UG admissions in MP nearly full; PG lags despite extra round
Indore: Undergraduate (UG) admissions in Madhya Pradesh reached 3.58 lakh, leaving few seats vacant, while postgraduate (PG) admissions continued to lag with only 1.06 lakh enrolments despite an extended college level counselling (CLC) round. Teacher education programmes under the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) also saw strong demand, with 65,000 admissions against 68,000 seats. The department of higher education (DHE) earlier extended the admission process for UG and PG courses through an additional CLC round until August 14, following requests from students and colleges. While the PG admission deadline has now been extended further until August 30, UG and NCTE courses have been closed without a fresh extension. The extended window had a significant impact on overall enrolments. On August 3, before the additional CLC round began, UG admissions stood at 3.18 lakh, PG at 79,286, and NCTE at 60,060. Within ten days, the numbers surged sharply, with UG rising by 40,000, PG by 27,000, and NCTE by nearly 5,000. In total, around 70,000 students secured admissions during the short extension period.
