Martindale: ‘I'd put my money on Tony Bloom'

Edinburgh Reporter16 hours ago
Businessman Tony Bloom has undoubtedly achieved with a provincial club, Brighton and Hove Albion, preserving their top flight status in England and taking the South Coast club into Europe.
Now, he has invested nearly £10m in Heart of Midlothian FC and was a spectator as the Gorgie club earned three points to open their William Hill Premiership campaign on a high with a 2-0 home win over Aberdeen on Monday.
On the eve of the game, Bloom reiterated his desire to split Scotland's big two, Celtic and Rangers, and David Martindale, Livingston's straight-talking manager, warned critics not to discount the Brighton chairman who now as a stake of just over 29 per cent in Hearts.
History may be against Bloom as the Old Firm have won every league title between them since Aberdeen won in 1985 under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Martindale (pictured by Nigel Duncan), however, told a media briefing at the Home of the Set Fare Arena: 'If I was a betting man, I would put my money on Tony Bloom achieving what he said he wants to achieve.
'I'd put my chips behind him because he's shown what he can do.'
He was there to preview his club's home William Hill Premiership clash with newly-promoted Falkirk who pipped Martindale's men for last season's Championship. The pair clash at 3pm on Saturday.
Livingston earned a valuable point on the road at Rugby Park last Saturday, coming from 2-0 down with goals from Robbie Muirhead and Scott Pittman, while Falkirk also drew their season-opener at home to Dundee United last Sunday. It finished in a 2-2 draw, Dylan Tait and Ethan Ross netting.
Martindale does not expect there to be much between the teams but he praised his men for their character and resilience in last weekend's game, and he added: 'We deserved something from the game, we deserved a point, minimum.
'They boys stuck to the task and we were a wee bit unlucky to be two goals down, we stuck to the process, stuck to the tactics, overall, the performance was there.'
He added: 'Falkirk as a club have done tremendously well, and John (McGlynn) has done a great job. The club, John and the players should take a lot of credit and they are back in the Premiership.
'We had good games last year, there was nothing in the games, I don't think there will be anything in this game and it will be a tight affair.'
He added: 'I am looking forward to the game, we are at home and there is a lot of familiarity and continuity there with both teams. We've probably had a bigger turn around in terms of numbers but, in terms of the starting side, there is not a huge difference.'
Martindale may add to his side as he has suffered early-season injuries one, in particular, to midfielder, Aidan Denholm who he secured from Hearts, but he added: 'If the window shut tomorrow I would be fairly happy with what we have got, but potentially we could strengthen one or two.'
Injuries have set the West Lothian club back in 'the middle of the park', and Martindale revealed: 'We are quietly active on that front, but that is us reacting to injuries, if I am being honest.'

'Maybe Dibling's time at Saints is coming to end'

BBC Sport senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel says those close to Southampton believe Tyler Dibling's time as a Saints player could be coming to an Wednesday, it was revealed the 19-year-old had been withdrawn from full-contact training by the Championship side. Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Mokbel stated that while some people closer to the Everton camp feel the deal has stalled, others suspect that there are still "legs" to it."The information varies depending on who you speak to," he said. "If you speak to people closer to Everton, they will tell you that the deal has reached an impasse and Southampton are asking for far too much. "If you speak to those closer to the South Coast, there is a realisation there that maybe Tyler Dibling's time is coming to an end."Listen to more about Saints and Dibling on BBC Sounds' Football Daily podcast.

Wrexham's plan B if record-breaking £7.5m transfer collapses with manager holding up deal

Wrexham's plan B if record-breaking £7.5m transfer collapses with manager holding up deal Wrexham may target a move for a former player if their record-breaking £7.5million move for Nathan Broadhead falls through, as they continue building for the Championship Wrexham co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds face a dilemma over their main summer transfer target (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) Wrexham could turn to a familiar face if their club-record-breaking £7.5million deal for Nathan Broadhead falls through. ‌ The Red Dragons have spent big in the summer transfer window after being promoted from League One last season, with their total estimated outlay reaching an eight-figure sum. Manager Phil Parkinson has received significant funding from Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, bringing in eight new players to date. ‌ The former Bolton boss revealed this week that there could be more arrivals as well as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Championship. The purchase of a ninth player is on the horizon as Wrexham pursue a move for Broadhead, the Ipswich Town winger who started his career in the North Wales team's academy. ‌ If the deal for the Wales international receives the green light, it would see them break their transfer record for the third time during the current window. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna admitted this week that Broadhead has expressed a desire to leave. However, he insisted he would not sanction the 27-year-old's departure unless the Tractor Boys' scarce attacking options are improved. While Wrexham are prepared to be patient in their pursuit of Broadhead, it's now being reported that they do have a back-up plan if the move collapses. According to the Daily Mail, Barnsley's Davis Keillor-Dunn is being eyed by Parkinson as a potential alternative. The forward was one of the standout performers in League One last term, scoring 18 goals and providing five assists, and previously had a brief spell with Wrexham in the National League in 2020. Article continues below Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead (right) is wanted by Wrexham but the deal is currently being held up (Image: PA) Keillor-Dunn would likely be a cheaper option than Broadhead, with the Barnsley Chronicle reporting that the South Yorkshire side is seeking offers in the region of £5m for their player. It remains unclear how long Wrexham are willing to wait for Broadhead's future to be decided, but Ipswich boss McKenna acknowledged the player's preference to make the switch at a press conference on Wednesday. ‌ The ex-Manchester United coach said: "(There's) no update from what I said last week, really, with Nathan. He's expressed his desire to look at another opportunity that's been presented to him. We'll have to see how the situation plays out over the coming weeks." When asked if Broadhead will feature in Ipswich's opening Championship game against Birmingham on Friday night, he added: "He's been training and we're short in those positions. "He's missed some of the pre-season minutes, so he hasn't played quite as much, but he's in our plans for the weekend and there's every chance that we'll need a strong contribution from him." ‌ Broadhead has been identified as a key target for Wrexham as they look to finalise their business before the transfer window closes on September 1. He signed for the Tractor Boys from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023 and was instrumental in helping them achieve back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship.
