Concur survey: Companies are cutting back on perks but not all corporate travel

Travel Weekly02-07-2025
A solid majority of companies said they plan to maintain or increase business travel spending this year, and many are tightening policies to save money rather than imposing wider travel restrictions, according to the annual SAP Concur Global Business Travel Survey.
The survey -- which included responses from 700 travel managers across seven business markets, 3,750 business travelers across 24 markets and 600 CFOs across six markets -- was fielded from April 30 through May 12, which Concur noted was "during a period of high uncertainty associated with global trade." Even so, 93% of travel managers, 90% of CEOs and 89% of travelers said their company had no plans to cut travel budgets.
Across all respondent types, about 60% said their company typically makes travel budget cuts in the form of "small changes to all trips" rather than wider policy changes, and 87% of business travelers said they had seen such cuts over the previous 12 months, according to Concur. The most frequently cited cuts in the survey were on extra overnight stays to prevent long travel days and use of premium air classes, each cited by 30% of travelers, and non-client-facing travel, cited by 28% of travelers.
Amid those cutbacks, 85% of business travelers said they would pay out of their own pockets to add additional perks to business travel, the survey indicated. Among the most frequent items travelers were willing to take on as personal expenses included: accommodation upgrades (38% of travelers), adding hotel nights to avoid long travel days (35%) and premium seating (30%).
That willingness varied by region, with 99% of respondents from India and 91% from the United States saying they would pay their own money to improve their business travel experience, compared with 66% of travelers from France and 73% of travelers from Japan. Younger travelers also were more likely to spend their own money on business travel, with 93% of Gen Z travelers indicating they would do some compared with 62% of baby boomers.
In addition, the survey indicated that many company travel budgets are "insufficient," according to Concur. More than 80% of CFOs said company budget limitations prevent employees from traveling as much as they need to efficiently perform their jobs, and 69% of travel managers said their company travel budget didn't reflect the importance of business travel.
Business travelers, meanwhile, were nearly unanimous in their willingness to travel, with 97% saying they were at least somewhat willing to travel over the next year, and 94% said business travel was essential to their role. Only about half of surveyed travelers thought their current frequency of travel was about right, with 30% saying they are traveling too much and 19% saying they are not traveling enough.

Second-hand Homeware Market Trends and Growth Drivers 2025-2034 - Top Companies Transforming the Industry with AI and Strategic Partnerships

Surge in Conscious Consumerism Drives Growth in Second-Hand Homeware Market Amid Sustainability Trends and Digital Innovation Second-hand Homeware Market Dublin, Aug. 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Second-hand Homeware Market Opportunity, Growth Drivers, Industry Trend Analysis, and Forecast 2025-2034" has been added to offering. The Global Second-Hand Homeware Market was valued at USD 29.9 billion in 2024 and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% to reach USD 50.9 billion by 2034. This upward trajectory reflects a transformative shift in consumer behavior, driven by growing awareness of environmental concerns and a push toward sustainable living. As shoppers worldwide become more mindful of their ecological footprint, they're turning to second-hand options as a meaningful way to reduce waste and extend the lifecycle of products. The appeal of pre-owned homeware lies not only in its affordability but also in its character, uniqueness, and contribution to circular consumption. Consumers today are more conscious than ever of how their purchases impact the environment and intentionally seek products aligning with a greener lifestyle. With inflation and economic uncertainties shaping buying habits, second-hand home furnishings offer a budget-friendly alternative without compromising style or quality. Vintage designs, high-quality craftsmanship, and the thrill of discovering one-of-a-kind items make this market segment especially appealing to both millennials and Gen Z buyers who value authenticity and sustainability. The shift toward minimalism, combined with the influence of social media aesthetics and home styling trends, further fuels the desire for curated second-hand pieces that enhance living spaces while supporting eco-conscious values. Digital platforms are playing a key role in propelling this market forward by simplifying the buying and selling process with intuitive interfaces, secure payment systems, and streamlined logistics. Buyers favor platforms that deliver quick access to listings, reliable delivery options, and seamless customer experiences. The convenience factor and the desire to make responsible purchasing decisions make online marketplaces the preferred choice for many. As lifestyles become increasingly flexible, especially in urban environments, consumers lean into temporary, adaptable, and cost-effective furniture solutions. This has led to a growing reliance on second-hand goods to furnish homes, apartments, and rentals without the high costs associated with new products. In 2024, the furniture category led the second-hand homeware market, generating USD 13.2 billion in revenue, and is projected to expand at a CAGR of 5.8% through 2034. Furniture remains a standout performer due to strong consumer interest in items built to last and visually distinctive. There's a rising appreciation for vintage aesthetics and well-made pieces such as sofas, tables, beds, chairs, and storage units. Buyers actively seek furniture that brings a sense of personality into their living spaces, with the added benefit of reducing their environmental impact. The emphasis on quality over quantity and the desire for unique, story-rich homeware have created a thriving marketplace for reused goods. The market is segmented by product condition into used and new (unused), with used items continuing to dominate. In 2024, used homeware held a 71.3% market share and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% through 2034. Consumers gravitate toward gently used pieces to save money and align with a growing commitment to sustainability and intentional consumption. Retailers and platforms are responding by launching certified pre-owned programs, encouraging trade-ins, and providing resale-friendly policies. These initiatives extend the lifespan of household items and support the broader movement toward waste reduction and responsible sourcing. The United States Second-Hand Homeware Market generated USD 8.7 billion in 2024 and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% through 2034. The trend is especially prominent in major urban areas, where space constraints and fast-paced lifestyles demand affordable, compact, and multi-functional furniture. The rise of short-term rentals, mobile living, and digital nomadism has led to an increased reliance on local resale platforms and online marketplaces. These tools give consumers convenient, low-cost access to quality homeware, supporting the local circular economy while helping reduce landfill waste. Leading companies shaping the global second-hand homeware space include Wayfair, Mercari, Letgo, AptDeco, Rejuvenation, Kaiyo, The RealReal, Goodwill Industries International, eBay, OfferUp, Vinterior Group, Chairish, 1stDibs, IKEA Retail, and Trove Marketplace. These businesses leverage strategic partnerships with retailers and logistics providers to enhance efficiency and platform usability. Many are integrating AI-based features to deliver personalized recommendations while boosting consumer trust through verified listings and quality checks. By launching mobile apps, digital campaigns, and even furniture rental and subscription models, these companies connect with sustainability-focused consumers across demographics, expanding their reach in a competitive, rapidly evolving marketplace. Re-Coding the Future

Throughout history, new forms of energy have shifted the gears of human progress, profoundly changing how people live and work. Ancient societies started with muscle, moved to animals, then harnessed water, steam and eventually, electricity. Today, AI is emerging as our next energy source, like fire, electricity or steam in past revolutions, to power productivity in the knowledge economy. Horses, steam engines and power plants all still matter of course, but the world is increasingly running on code and software. What some are calling Economy 4.0 is the AI-powered transformation of the knowledge economy, with software reordering how value is created, delivered and scaled. AI is the new power for business, but software is the power grid. It's the axle around which our knowledge economy is starting to turn. Software now shapes how we communicate, manage money, access healthcare, shop, learn, and nearly every other aspect of our modern lives. "Software is one of the key elements of making WellSky successful," said Joel Dolisy, Chief Technology Officer. "There is a lot of people interaction that is all enabled through software. [It] is a big, big important part of how we make that happen." And yet, much of the code that shapes the economy is old enough to collect social security. Nearly $3 trillion worth of global business operations still run on COBOL daily. Despite the increasing criticality of code, the world is still reliant on software that may have been developed by our grandparents. The impact: a chilling effect on disruptive innovation. Vimala Suresh, Vice President, CareSource, said, "If that file doesn't get processed in time, the member can't get the surgery they're eligible for. This could be life-threatening. That's how important software is in healthcare." Software development methods, processes, tools and mindsets from the past are crumbling under the pressure of AI-powered systems and potential. This presents leaders with a once-in-a-career opportunity. That's where Ascendion comes in. The company says it's unleashing intelligent agents that enhance humans as it builds software faster and better. Now, engineers using AAVA, a platform of agents aligned to software development and management, are using AI to deliver better code at half the cost and twice the speed. To unlock the potential value, leaders, Ascendion says IT teams, operations, line-of-business, procurement, finance and the C-suite must lean into new ways of designing, building and managing software. This isn't theory or buzzwords. It's happening now using what Ascendion calls Engineering to the Power of AI (EngineeringAI). This means companies can do more with less, allowing more time for talented humans to create, innovate, imagine and lead. David Park, President, Commercial Bank, Axos Bank, said, "With the speed of development and the reduction of cost through AI, we are able to personalize the banking experience. Hyper-personalization is what's most exciting about financial services and the software evolution we are going through." Marc Andreessen was right when he said, "Software is eating the world." Now, thanks to AI, software engineering is the first course. The data is adding up. Gartner predicts AI software will reach $297 billion by 2027. Researchers are uncovering a double-digit decrease in jobs related to writing and coding. A growing number of early adopter CIOs are already reporting that AI can yield efficiency gains of 20% to 40%. Innovation, growth, savings and transparency aren't new, but this is: AI is moving from the computer science lab to every business. The new power revolution from AI is already starting. The first major disruption where real value is being delivered today comes from how software is being built. AI is changing not just what is built, but how it's built. Every new power revolution—fire, water wheels, steam, electricity and now AI—comes with risks, disruptions and unintended consequences. AI's impact on software engineering will be profound, and it needs to be managed so we advance safely and civilly. In the coming years and decades, AI agents will disrupt countless business processes, consumer experiences and jobs. But today, software engineering is being re-coded by the bot. Business leaders, policy makers and employees can embrace the potential for AI and tame new machines so that value generation tips the scales away from risk, fear and failed projects.

Disposable Plates Market Eyes $10.7 Billion Valuation by 2034 - Commercial Sector Commands 95% of Disposable Plates Market Share, Emphasizing Sustainable Dining Solutions

The U.S. Disposable Plates Market dominated the global landscape with a 76% share, generating $1.64 billion in 2024 Disposable Plates Market Dublin, Aug. 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Disposable Plates Market Opportunity, Growth Drivers, Industry Trend Analysis, and Forecast 2025-2034" has been added to offering. The Disposable Plates Market was valued at USD 5.6 Billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 10.7 Billion by 2034, rising at a CAGR of 6.80%. The market growth is largely fueled by the shift toward sustainable living and the demand for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional tableware. Growing environmental awareness has led to a preference for disposable plates made from biodegradable, compostable, and recycled materials. The focus on reducing carbon footprints and minimizing single-use plastic waste drives this market's trajectory. Additionally, the surge in food delivery services, catering businesses, and quick-service restaurants amplifies the need for convenient and sustainable dining solutions. As consumers prioritize sustainability, manufacturers are developing plates from renewable resources such as sugarcane bagasse, bamboo, palm leaves, and cornstarch-based materials. These eco-friendly plates offer a practical alternative without compromising durability and aesthetics. Moreover, increasing governmental regulations aimed at curbing plastic waste and encouraging green packaging create new opportunities for market players. The rising adoption of eco-friendly plates at large-scale events, corporate gatherings, and public venues reflects a cultural shift toward environmental responsibility. The market is segmented by product type, including plastic, aluminum, paper, and other materials. Paper plates are expected to witness a 7.3% CAGR from 2025 to 2034 due to their biodegradable nature, ease of disposal, and compatibility with a wide range of food products. Consumers are increasingly steering away from plastic plates, scrutinized for their adverse environmental impact. The industry is rapidly shifting toward innovative biodegradable alternatives, such as plant-based plastics and bio-coated materials that mimic plastic properties but break down without leaving toxic residues. Consequently, paper plates are emerging as the preferred choice for practical and eco-conscious solutions. Based on end-use, the disposable plates market is classified into residential and commercial sectors, with commercial applications accounting for 95% of the overall share in 2024. The commercial segment, including food service providers, catering companies, and beverage centers, drives high demand for disposable plates due to their convenience and cost-effectiveness. These establishments are increasingly adopting palm leaf plates for their sturdiness, elegant appearance, and ability to hold hot and cold foods without leakage or breakage. Using sustainable options appeals to environmentally aware customers and enhances brand reputation. The U.S. Disposable Plates Market dominated the global landscape with a 76% share, generating USD 1.64 billion in 2024. The U.S. market benefits from a strong push toward environmental sustainability and a consumer shift toward eco-friendly products. The increasing pace of on-the-go lifestyles and the popularity of takeout meals have significantly contributed to the rising demand for disposable plates in the country. With consumers prioritizing convenience and environmental impact, single-use products continue to offer practical solutions that align with modern, fast-paced living.
