SQUH performs first-ever ‘awake craniotomy' in Oman
The complex procedure was led by Dr Ghusn al Sideiri, Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery, supported by a distinguished team of Omani medical professionals from multiple disciplines. The operation, which lasted several hours, involved the precise removal of a tumour from a critically sensitive part of the patient's brain.
The patient remained fully awake throughout the surgery and was able to communicate with the medical team, undergoing a series of neurological assessments in real time. This approach enabled the team to accurately remove the tumour avoiding any neurological complications.
The awake craniotomy technique is typically employed in cases where tumours are situated close to parts of the brain responsible for speech, movement or cognition. Keeping the patient awake allows surgeons to continuously monitor essential brain functions during the operation, significantly minimising the risk of damage and ensuring the best possible outcomes.
SQUH stated that successful execution of this advanced surgical method underscores the growing capabilities of Omani medical teams and reflects the hospital's commitment to delivering innovative, patient-centred care.
'This achievement represents a major milestone in the development and preparedness of Oman's national healthcare system. It highlights the high level of expertise among Omani healthcare professionals and the ability of local institutions to keep pace with global advancements in medicine.'
The success of the procedure also aligns with the ambitious vision of University Medical City to establish itself as a regional and international leader in healthcare – a vision grounded in strategic investment in cutting-edge technologies and the empowerment of national talent.

Omani doctor's tech firm joins forces with US healthcare giant
Muscat – An Omani doctor's tech venture, born from the chaos of overburdened hospital wards in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), has joined forces with one of the largest healthcare staffing firms in the United States. Aya Healthcare, based in San Diego, has acquired Locum's Nest, a British company that connects NHS hospitals with healthcare professionals through a mobile app. The platform helps fill staffing gaps more efficiently and has already saved the NHS over £750mn since its launch in 2016. The company was co-founded by Dr Ahmed Shahrabani and Dr Nicholas Andreou, both NHS physicians at the time. Dr Shahrabani, who was born in Muscat and studied at the British School in Madinat Qaboos, told Muscat Daily that the idea for Locum's Nest came from witnessing daily inefficiencies in the hospital system. 'As a junior doctor, I saw time lost to rota gaps being filled through last-minute phone calls and emails. It was not safe and not sustainable,' he said. 'We created Locum's Nest to fix that – to give doctors and nurses more time, clarity and control so they can focus on their patients.' Dr Ahmed Shahrabani (R) and Dr Nicholas Andreou Today, the app supports over 70,000 clinicians across the UK. Following the acquisition by Aya Healthcare, Locum's Nest plans to expand its reach nationwide with Dr Shahrabani continuing as CEO. 'Our mission is not changing – it's accelerating,' he said. 'This partnership gives us the infrastructure to scale while staying true to our core: empowering clinicians and improving patient care.' Though the platform will continue to operate under the Locum's Nest brand, the acquisition aligns two leading healthcare staffing innovators on either side of the Atlantic. Aya Healthcare is the largest healthcare talent software and staffing company in the US, known for building flexible, tech-driven solutions for hospitals and health systems. Dr Shahrabani, who still practises medicine in North Central London, believes Omani youth can learn from his journey. 'My advice is simple: go for it. Start building and learning now. Oman has immense potential, especially in healthcare,' he said. 'The infrastructure is there. With the right mindset and innovation from within, Oman can become a regional hub.' He also expressed pride in his Omani roots, describing his school days in Muscat as formative. 'Those were some of the happiest years of my life. That foundation shaped who I am today.' Outside of medicine and business, Dr Shahrabani is a semi-professional race car driver in a British national championship, a tennis player and an off-roading enthusiast. 'Entrepreneurship is a lot like medicine – what sets you apart is how you connect with people,' he said. 'Communication, empathy and building relationships matter more than any textbook.' He welcomed aspiring entrepreneurs from Oman to reach out to him on LinkedIn, adding, 'I'd be honoured to support the next generation in any way I can.'

Dhofar hosts awareness event on drug use, online blackmail
Salalah: A community awareness event held in Salalah on Monday brought together healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and the public to discuss the growing dangers of drug addiction and cybercrime. Organised by the Omani Women's Association in Salalah, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhofar and the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the event, 'Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All." Dr Hossam Fattouh, Head of Awqad Health Centre, described addiction as a chronic illness that alters brain function and behaviour, requiring comprehensive medical and psychological care. 'Addiction doesn't happen overnight,' Dr Fattouh said. 'It develops in stages – starting with habituation, then building tolerance, and eventually leading to full dependency on the substance.' He noted that addiction can stem from a wide range of substances – including illegal drugs, synthetic compounds, and even prescription medications when misused. Warning signs, he said, include sudden behavioural changes, poor academic or work performance, mood instability, social withdrawal, neglect of appearance, new associations with questionable peers, and unusual financial behaviour. Dr Fattouh expressed concern about the rising misuse of prescription sedatives, such as benzodiazepines, calling for strict adherence to medical instructions and cautioning against altering dosages without consulting a doctor. He stressed that prevention begins at home, through open communication between parents and children, setting positive examples, and building trust. 'Recovery is possible,' he added, 'but it requires a clear treatment plan, psychological support, and long-term follow-up. Family and community support are essential to lasting recovery.' The second session was delivered by Major Engineer Ahmed bin Awadh Al-Mashikhi, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations at the ROP in Dhofar, who addressed the escalating threat of online blackmail. Al-Mashikhi outlined the types and legal definitions of cybercrime under Omani law, explaining how perpetrators exploit personal data to extort victims. He described the emotional toll such crimes take on victims and detailed practical steps individuals can take to protect their privacy online.'People must be cautious about the information they share on digital platforms,' he said. 'Recognising the early signs of blackmail and reporting incidents to the authorities can prevent greater harm.' He concluded by walking attendees through ROP's procedures for handling cybercrime complaints, encouraging the public to report incidents without delay and to trust the police's capacity to act swiftly and confidentially. The awareness programme comes amid broader efforts to promote public safety and well-being in Dhofar, particularly during the busy Khareef season, when thousands of visitors arrive in Salalah. Organisers hope the event will spark meaningful conversations within families and communities about early prevention, mental health, and digital security.

Health insurance claims management firm established in Oman
The first company specializing in health insurance claims management company, was established today. Green Line Health Insurance Claims Management Company is the first Omani company licensed for this activity, supported by a national vision consistent with the directives of Oman Vision 2040, aiming to provide services with global standards using the latest technologies, and to enhance and empower national competencies to undertake a key role in this new field. Faisal Hamad Al Rashdi, Co-founder and CEO of Green Line Insurance Services, stated that, due to his long experience in the health insurance sector, he observed the operational challenges facing this sector, whether at the level of insurance companies, healthcare providers, or even policyholders. Given a clear gap in claims management, Al Rashdi decided to establish this company, especially with the Financial Services Authority (FSA) announcing the opening for applications to practice health insurance claims management as an independent and regulated activity. This presented a national opportunity to establish a specialized local company that contributes to building this vital sector. He explained that the market lacked a specialized company in health insurance claims management, with a greater reliance on foreign companies managing operations from outside Oman. This affected the speed and quality of services, in addition to the possibility of health data, which is highly sensitive, being leaked through external systems. The Financial Services Authority had taken the initiative to issue clear legislation to ensure the protection of this data within Oman. He noted that the company represents a reliable source managed by national competencies, meeting market needs through its proximity to clients, which directly reflects on work quality and the speed of transaction completion. Faisal Al Rashdi said that it is natural for any sector to face some challenges when entering a phase of change, especially when there are long-standing working relationships between the market and external parties that have managed this activity for decades. However, he stressed the necessity of redoubling efforts to build trust and confirm readiness to provide high-standard services that meet the needs and aspirations of target groups, in addition to full compliance with national regulations. As for the project's nature, he mentioned that the company offers a comprehensive package of services in health insurance claims management that meets international standards. These include accurate and prompt medical claims management, medical and administrative verification using smart systems to detect duplication and errors, as a step towards time management. It also covers medical network management, from contracting with hospitals and clinics to ensuring the quality of service provided to policyholders, in addition to data analysis and smart reporting that helps insurance companies make decisions based on accurate data. He emphasized that the company relies heavily on digital solutions and modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, for faster data analysis and the automation of routine operations using robotic process automation (RPA), which reduces manual errors and saves time and effort. Furthermore, it is fully integrated with the national platform developed by the Financial Services Authority ("Dhamani" platform), which has been approved for fully electronic operations. He clarified that the company handles data confidentially, storing client data on company-owned servers only, without relying on external servers, to ensure complete control over information security. It applies best cybersecurity standards, such as advanced data encryption during transmission and storage, firewalls, and intrusion detection and prevention systems. Additionally, access permissions are granted on a limited and well-considered basis according to the employees' job roles, along with adherence to all local and international laws and regulations related to data protection and periodic reviews to ensure continuous compliance.
