Arise Sir David! Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles: Report
David Beckham, the former England soccer captain who has been an ambassador for the UN children's fund for two decades, is to receive a knighthood in next week's honours list from King Charles III, according to UK media reports Friday.
Without citing sources, the BBC said Beckham is set to receive further recognition both for his soccer career, and his contributions to British society.
The knighthood will make Beckham 'Sir David' while his wife since 1999, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, will become 'Lady Beckham.' In 2003, Beckham was awarded the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, for services to soccer. Victoria Beckham got the same honour for services to the fashion industry in a later New Year Honours list.
Honours are awarded twice a year, once at New Year's, and then in June to mark the king's birthday. They are mostly made on the recommendation of the government, though the monarch has input too.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office would not confirm the press reports, as is custom. Buckingham Palace declined to comment. The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm the award of the knighthood, which was first reported in The Sun tabloid newspaper.
In video footage published by The Sun from the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this month, the king is seen asking Beckham if he 'received his 50th birthday present.' The King appeared to say 'I'm glad it got to you,' with Beckham responding: 'It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind.' Beckham and the king have crossed paths on numerous occasions, including at state functions. Last year, Beckham became an ambassador for The King's Foundation, an educational and sustainability charity Charles launched in 1990.
Beckham, who is clearly a patriot, is the only English soccer player to score at three different World Cups and his illustrious career included the treble-winning campaign of 1999, when Manchester United won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.
With 115 appearances for the England national team, Beckham is third in the all-time list. He also captained the side on 59 occasions. After leaving Manchester United 2003, Beckham played for Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain. He now co-owns the MLS team Inter Miami.
His career wasn't always a high, though. After the 1998 World Cup in France, Beckham was widely vilified for his petulant kick of Argentina player Diego Simeone, which saw him sent off. Many fans blamed him for England's exit.
In 2023's Netflix documentary series 'Beckham,' he described the abuse he experienced, which included an effigy of him hanging from a noose outside a London pub.
'I knew it was bad at the time, but going over that whole thing was quite a tough one,' he told the AP. The four-part documentary series about Beckham's life and professional career scored him an Emmy in 2024 for outstanding documentary or non-fiction series.
Beckham has been a style icon and celebrity and has been a prominent supporter of charities, including UNICEF, which created 'The David Beckham UNICEF Fund' in 2015 to mark a decade's partnership between the two. Beckham also played a pivotal role in London being awarded the Summer Olympic Games in 2012.
If the knighthood is confirmed, Beckham would join an elite group of British soccer players to have been knighted, including England's 1966 World Cup winners, Geoff Hurst and Bobby Charlton, and Scotland's Kenny Dalglish.

EXCLUSIVE! ‘Mirzapur' actress Shweta Tripathi on ‘Pride Month': 'How can we celebrate others if we refuse to...'
In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, Shweta Tripathi spoke about it and the evolution of queer love stories in Hindi cinema read more The incredibly talented Shweta Tripathi is all set to come back to theatre, this time as she is producing a play after over a decade under her theatre production company, AllMyTea. The play is a very popular international play by British playwright, Mike Bartlett. The play titled Cock is a queer drama, directed by Manish Gandhi. The play is a revival of the play that was last performed in India over a decade ago. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Shweta will be producing the play under her theatre production company, AllMyTea and will make its grand new premiere in Delhi on 6th June and in Mumbai on 10th June at Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai before travelling to other cities in India. The play is being launched in June as a celebration of International Pride Month with a key highlight on this unique queer themed drama that focuses on sexuality as its core theme. And in an exclusive interview with Firstpost, the actress spoke about it and the evolution of queer love stories in Hindi cinema. Edited excerpts from the interview You are returning to theatre as a producer after a decade so what's the feeling like? They say you'll get anything that you like. Sometimes things come to you that you want to choose. We do attract a lot. I got into acting because I saw actors on stage. The control over their craft and the magic that unfolded. And whatever they created, I believed in that world. It has always been a magical world for me and it is only because of them that I have been able to understand my own emotions. It made my bubble bigger because actors are preoccupied in their own world. This definitely had an influence on me. Is this your debut as a theatre producer? No, this is not my debut. I have been producing shows and plays before. I became an actor because ever since childhood I wanted to be on stage. I want to live with myself through a certain medium or platform. So I really enjoy that. What do you have to say about the title Cock? This title belongs to the British playwright who has written the play. This is not an Indian play nor we are adapting it. This is an award winning play. This is a really popular playwright to whom the story and the title belongs. We are in the Pride Month. What does it mean to you in today's times? Just the word pride says it all. We are losing our individuality. How can we celebrate others if we refuse to celebrate ourselves? The conditioning has become so strong that other people are telling us who we are, but we should do and what we should not. We are going with the flow, but where is the fun in life? We have become products on a conveyer belt. How much have queer love stories evolved in cinema? We can evolve as much as the society does. For instance Gorej. And now, so many people have come out and spoken about it. We will be able to see the changes of the society on the big screen. The stories around queer are only going to see a rapid increase. One of my favourites is Rani Kohenur. What a brilliant performer. I went to her play and there was so much happiness and love that I was just mind blown. Why do we need to limit ourselves and put ourselves in a bracket?

Marnus Labuschagne Predicts 'Great Match' In WTC Final Vs South Africa At Lord's
Last Updated: Marnus Labuschagne feels it will a 'great match' in the WTC final against South Africa at Lord's, praising their balanced team and highlights Test cricket's significance. Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne believes the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord's will be another 'great match". Australia last played South Africa in a Test series in the 2022–23 season, winning 2–0 at home. 'South Africa have been a very good team in this cycle. On paper, it's a well-balanced side with some really nice players," Labuschagne told ICC. 'It will be a good challenge for us, and we need to be at our best. Playing at Lord's is always special due to its history. It's going to be an awesome week and another great match," he added. Labuschagne feels Test cricket is in a 'great place" ahead of the WTC final, as his team aims to defend their title. The 30-year-old was part of the XI that defeated India by 209 runs at The Oval in 2023 to win the trophy for the first time. They will now face South Africa, the country of Labuschagne's birth, in the third edition of a competition he believes has revitalised Test cricket. 'It is an exciting tournament. Every Test has significance, it involves all the countries, and anyone can make the final. It's exciting to play in, as you're competing for a trophy at the end of a two-year cycle. I think it has worked great. Beating India two years ago was awesome," he said. 'From a player's perspective, the game appears to be in a great place. Every time Test cricket is on, people want to watch it. While India, Australia, and England contribute significantly to the popularity of Test cricket, we hope all countries continue to produce great players and uphold the tradition of Test cricket." Labuschagne has been a key player in Australia's top order since making history as Test cricket's first-ever concussion substitute at Lord's during the 2019 Ashes, the same venue as the upcoming final. After his first 14 Tests, Labuschagne had an impressive average of 63.43 and was the world's top-ranked Test batter for six months from December 2021. However, his form has dipped in the current WTC cycle, with an average of just 28.33 and only one century. Despite this, he made key contributions during the home series against India, scoring 64 in Adelaide and 70 and 72 in Melbourne. Labuschagne has also been preparing for the WTC final by playing in British conditions with Glamorgan, a county side that has become a second home for him. 'I love playing with the guys here; they are close friends, and I love the club's environment," he said. 'Having a long-term relationship with the club allows me to call the director of cricket to line things up. Without that relationship, there might be some hesitancy, or you might not get someone in for two games. That's the benefit of the long-term commitment I've shown over the last six years."
