Father's Day is just around the corner. Gift ideas that will put a smile on dad's face

Families are counting down to celebrate Father's Day, a holiday to commemorate dads, grandpas and male figures.
The county has been celebrating fathers for more than a century. The country's first unofficial Father's Day began with a service in a West Virginia church in 1908 as the congregation came together to eulogize 362 men killed in a Fairmont Coal Company mine disaster.
The sentiment behind the holiday and its celebration have spread and expanded since then. In 1972, President Richard Nixon made it a national holiday.
The day now includes backyard barbecues, rounds of golf or other hobbies enjoyed by dads and gifts. Gifts are a great way to show appreciation to others, Jessica Andrews-Hanna, an associate professor at the University of Arizona said in a Q&A, adding that gift-giving makes us feel better.
"Evidence from brain imaging also suggests that both giving gifts and receiving gifts activate core areas of our brain associated with reward and pleasure," Andrews-Hanna said in a news release.
Many may be wondering what to get their Dad for his special day? A few ideas:
If your father is a fan of cars or auto racing — maybe even still excited after watching the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix — book him a spot at Michigan International Speedway for a one-hour training session inside a race car.
At the end he'll have the chance to drive an Indy-style race car. The event is hosted by Virgin Experience Gifts and allows the driver to get on the track for a timed session and communicate with a racing instructor through a radio system.
There are eight packages available starting at $539.
For the dads who enjoy fishing, there are numerous spots in Michigan perfect for the occasion.
Michigan's lakes and streams are home to more than 150 species, most of which are legal to catch. You can cast a line at more than 100 state parks and hundreds of other locations. Some favorites include William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor, Bishop Park, Belleville Lake and Lake St. Clair.
Gifts can include such things as rods, reels, a cooler, etc.
To celebrate the Detroit Tigers' quasquicentennial season, the Detroit Free Press' book 'Roar of 125: The Epic History of the Detroit Tigers!' will cost $44.95, but order now and it's only $33.71, plus shipping and handling.
Order online at Tigers125.PictorialBook.com.
For a personal automotive gift, give sign your dad up for unlimited car washes for as low as $16 a month.
Super Car Wash has Michigan's No. 1 unlimited wash club membership program, and has 10 locations across the state.
If your father is a sports fan, there are tons of Michigan teams apparel that you can get him to support his favorite team.
Whether it's the Tigers, Pistons, Lions, or University of Michigan or Michigan State, there is a plethora of Michigan merchandise that your father would love.
Bucket list golf course round for dad
Michigan is blessed with a number of great golf courses, although some can be pricey for every day play.
But if dad's a golf nut — and there are many around — maybe a round at someplace like Arcadia Bluffs in Arcadia ($275 through Oct. 5), American Dunes in Grand Haven ($205) or Forest Dunes in Roscommon ($165-$195) — or any number of other great courses — fits the bill.
Father's Day falls on June 15, 2025.
Father's Day always falls on the third Sunday of June, which means the calendar date changes every year.
The holiday celebrates fatherhood, fathers and father figures, the Old Farmer's Almanac's website says.
In the U.S., Father's Day celebrations date back to the early 1900s in the state of Washington, according to History.com.
Prior to that time period, a West Virginia church held the country's first event honoring fathers, a 1908 Sunday sermon for 362 men killed in a Fairmont Coal Company mine disaster.
In 1972, former President Richard Nixon signed a law making Father's Day a permanent national holiday.

Eastbound Highway 50 to close in West Sacramento over Father's Day weekend for construction

SACRAMENTO – Starting Friday night, eastbound Highway 50 in West Sacramento will be closed through Father's Day weekend for the ongoing pavement rehabilitation project. Caltrans said the eastbound closure will be from the Interstate 80 and Highway 50 split to Jefferson Boulevard from 9 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Tuesday. The closure will impact people commuting from Davis to attend the UC Davis commencement at the Golden 1 Center. The Athletics, who are out of town for the weekend, will be hosting the Houston Astros on Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Sutter Health Park. Over in Sacramento, the eastbound Highway 50 ramp to southbound Highway 99 will be closed for 55 hours, from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This is part of Caltrans' Fix50 project. Caltrans said drivers can take southbound Interstate 5 as a detour. Another option is to exit at 10th Street, turn left onto Riverside Boulevard, turn left on X Street and get onto westbound Highway 50 to merge onto southbound Highway 99. How to get around the Highway 50 closure Drivers heading east on Highway 50 will need to merge onto eastbound Interstate 80, take southbound I-5 back to eastbound Highway 50. Eastbound Highway 50 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Tuesday. Caltrans Fans heading to Sutter Health Park can take I-80 to southbound I-5 and merge onto westbound Highway 50 before taking the South River Road exit. Those attending the UC Davis commencement can exit I-5 at J Street in downtown Sacramento to arrive at the Golden 1 Center. All drivers are urged to build in additional travel time. Why is Highway 50 closing? Caltrans is working on the $280 million I-80 and Highway 50 pavement rehabilitation project. The extended closure is to help speed up the project's duration and improve workers' safety. A spokesperson for Caltrans said crews are replacing 30- to 40-year-old concrete. Among other upgrades, the project will rehabilitate ramps, upgrade existing barriers and guardrails to concrete barriers, rehabilitate bridge decks and replace overhead sign structures. Caltrans' website estimates construction will be complete in May 2026. The transportation department's Fix 50 project, which includes work from the Highway 50/I-5 interchange to Highway 50/Watt Avenue, was pushed back an entire year. It's now scheduled to be complete in July 2026.

The perfect track couldn't come at a better time for a struggling Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden needs to get his season back in sync. He sits 11th in the INDYCAR standings, a near insurmountable 185 points behind championship leader Alex Palou. The Team Penske driver has led just two laps and has a best finish of ninth in the last six races after opening the season with a third-place run at St. Petersburg. Newgarden needs a race at a track where he is ultra-comfortable and has a strong history. Welcome to World Wide Technology Raceway, commonly known as Gateway. This place has been Newgarden's domain in recent years and possibly no one is looking forward to this weekend (Sunday, 8 p.m. ET on FOX) as much as Newgarden. He won the first race in INDYCAR's return to Gateway in 2017. And won again in 2020. And 2021. And 2022. And 2024. That's five wins in his nine starts at the track, a 1.25-mile oval located just across the river from St. Louis. This year, his qualifying hasn't gone well as he has an average spot of 13th — his worst average starting position in the last 10 years. At WWTR, Newgarden has been an awesome qualifier as he has started in the first two rows in eight of the nine races. The one race where he didn't start in the front two rows, he started in Row 3. "The secret to our success on the ovals has been our cars," Newgarden said after the WWTR win a year ago. "You really can't will everything on an oval." Here are Newgarden's make-a-difference stats at Gateway: Newgarden has led 599 laps, compared to the driver with the next-highest total being Will Power at 450. Scott Dixon has led 379 (which includes 78 laps in the 2003 race), followed by Pato O'Ward (159) and Colton Herta (134). Series points leader Alex Palou has led ... no laps at WWTR, a place where Palou has started in the first five rows only once and has just one top-five finish. Newgarden hopes his own prowess on ovals for him and his Penske teammates continues. "You have to drive the car, get the most out of it," Newgarden said after that win last year. "When you have the best cars in the field, it makes your job a lot easier. "I think that's been the case for us. We've had incredible oval cars consistently over the last five, six years. We've just had great, great oval cars." This will be just the second oval race of the season (and the Indy 500 is so unique, it is unlike any other oval) and the first race this season where drivers return to a track where they raced the hybrid last year. Newgarden will have his engineer Luke Mason double as his strategist this weekend. For the last two races, Mason has been the strategist while Raul Prados has been the engineer. But Prados is part of the Penske sports-car team that is competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For Newgarden, he has a strong connection with Mason. "Luke's incredible," Newgarden said prior to the Detroit Grand Prix earlier this month about Mason taking over as strategist, at least in the interim. "That [role] won't be an issue." And while Newgarden has just one podium this year, the intense competitor speaks with confidence. "We can win any weekend," he said. "I always believe that."
