BKU faction leaders ‘detained' by Punjab Police day ahead of protest, alleges Dallewal

Hindustan Times06-05-2025

Key activists of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur), including president Jagjit Singh Dallewal, were detained on Tuesday in various districts ahead of the call for a one-day dharna outside Shambhu police station, farmers leaders said.
According to the information, union president Dallewal has been asked by the police not to leave his residence in the Faridkot district. A team of police officials reached Dallewal village at around 4 am and asked the veteran farm leader to stay at his house for the next 3-4 days.
Police authorities, however, didn't comment on the issue, with the top brass remaining tight-lipped over the action.
Several other leaders faced a similar ordeal in different districts of the state, the farmer leaders said. Among those detained are Manjit Singh Rai and Davinder Singh.
Official sources said several other leaders are facing police action to ensure that BKU (Sidhupur) cannot mobilise its cadre for tomorrow's agitation.
The farmers' body had recently announced to hold a protest outside the Shambhu police station on Tuesday against the state government's alleged use of repressive methods to evict them from their protest morchas in March, and also demanding strict action against those people who stole many of their belongings when they were evicted.
Dallewal posted a video on his Facebook page to criticise the police action against the Sidhupur faction. He said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is harassing the farmers' rights group, which is fighting for justice.
Dallewal said the union activists were scheduled to gather outside the Shambhu police station to highlight the alleged police misconduct and harassment of union volunteers.
He said when the dharnas site at Khanauri and Shambhu were forcibly evicted by the police, the volunteers faced police misbehaviour and tractor trolleys and several other items of farmers went missing.
'When our union demanded compensation for missing articles, the state police head ensured that losses would be compensated. The missing things were traced to close associates of AAP leaders and police personnel. Instead of initiating swift action against the culprit, the police started booking individuals who were tracking the missing farmers' articles. Now, when we planned against the police conduct, the government started an attempt to derail our agitation for May 6,' said Dallewal.
On March 19, the Punjab Police had cracked down on agitating farmers, detaining their leaders in Mohali when they were returning from a meeting with a central delegation led by agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Chandigarh.
The farmer leaders and some other farmers who were detained were released in subsequent days.

Protest heat rises in poll-bound Ludhiana

Bathinda: With the Ludhiana West byelection looming, the city is now on the radar of protesters of various hues — a pattern observed in previous poll-bound areas like Bathinda during the SAD-BJP tenure and Patiala-Chamkaur Sahib under the Congress govt. While some employee and unemployed unions are already holding agitations, the family of a deceased village sarpanch and members of various organisations are set to descend on Ludhiana on Thursday for a candle march. Their target: Guru Harsahai MLA Fauja Singh Sarari and his personal assistant, Bachittar Singh, demanding immediate action against them for alleged abetment to suicide. The protesters plan to converge near Gate Number 1 of Punjab Agriculture University, a stone's throw from the AAP election office for the Ludhiana West byelection. They intend to hold a protest march. Jashan Bawa, 24, the sarpanch of Trinda village and an AAP member, died by suicide on May 31. His family alleges that Bawa was driven to the extreme step due to continuous harassment by MLA Sarari and his personal assistant. On June 9, villagers and various organisations staged a protest at Lakho Ke Behram police station, disrupting the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway to demand justice. Ferozepur police have formed a special investigations team (SIT), comprising two SP-level officers and one DSP, to investigate the matter and determine the MLA's alleged role in the incident. MLA Sarari has denied the allegations, attributing them to a smear campaign by certain individuals, including members of his own party. Meanwhile, a separate wave of protests is set to hit Ludhiana on June 16, organised by the Narinderdeep death action committee. They are demanding a judicial inquiry into the alleged custodial death of 34-year-old IELTS teacher Narinderdeep, who died in Bathinda on May 23. The committee is also demanding the nomination of the CIA-2 in-charge in the case, the arrest of implicated police officers, a government job for a bereaved family member, and compensation. Delhi will not suffer in this monsoon as it did in 2023, says CM

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said 15 monitoring stations, including a central control room, have been set up to observe the Yamuna river level and track waterlogging-prone areas, enabling timely action to prevent floods and waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon. Ms. Gupta made the announcement after chairing a meeting on flood control and issuing the 'Flood Control Order, 2025', which will serve as a manual to ensure synergy among all the government departments while tackling emergency situations during heavy rain. 'Every year, citizens of Delhi suffer due to the dual challenges of floods and waterlogging. In August-September 2023, the city experienced unprecedented floods when the Yamuna river rose to 208.6 meters, submerging many residential areas and resulting in loss of life and severe disruption. We will be prepared this year,' said the CM. She criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, saying it did not take the work of flood control seriously. 'In 2023, the gates of the ITO barrage couldn't even be opened due to poor preparedness. In contrast, this year all major barrages have undergone large-scale repairs and maintenance, and nearly 20 lakh tonnes of silt has been removed from the major drains.' She added that 80-90% of the desilting works had been completed by the Public Works Department and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the remaining work is under way. Unseasonal rain last month led to several incidents of waterlogging, prompting the CM to take action against the officials concerned. Monsoon protocol As per Wednesday's order, sector committees have been created across the city. These will be headed by Cabinet Ministers Pravesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, and Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Each panel will include three to four District Magistrates and will be responsible for flood management in its respective sector. The PWD and other departments concerned have been asked to ensure that all permanent pump houses remain functional. They have also been instructed to deploy mobile pumps wherever necessary to prevent waterlogging. The central flood control room will start operating on June 15 and has been established at the office of the District Magistrate (East). It will function as a coordination hub with representatives from all civic bodies stationed 24x7. A total of 15 wireless stations, including the central control room, will continuously monitor the water levels of the Yamuna and other vulnerable areas. In response to the CM's allegations, AAP said that the ITO barrage is maintained by the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Haryana government. 'In 2023, they [Haryana government] had to suspend their Chief Engineer for failing to maintain the barrage's gates. In 2024, the AAP government ensured that the Haryana government properly maintained the gates. The same was done in 2025.'

Congress leader Pawan Khera criticizes Arvind Kejriwal over ‘inert opposition' remarks and AAP promises in Ludhiana West byelection.

Ludhiana: Senior leader and AICC national spokesperson Pawan Khera on Wednesday lashed out at (AAP) leader for suggesting that Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu would be ineffective if elected as an opposition MLA, calling the remark undemocratic and hypocritical. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Campaigning in Ludhiana for the West assembly bypoll, Khera accused Kejriwal of undermining the role of opposition in governance and challenged him to make AAP's own opposition MLAs in Delhi resign if he truly believes such leaders serve no purpose. Khera also demanded clarity on AAP's promise to induct Sanjeev Arora into the Punjab cabinet if he wins the seat. "Which current cabinet minister will be removed to make way for Arora?" Khera asked. "The public has a right to know." In a sharp personal rebuke, Khera said Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann had "mortgaged the state's honour to Delhi", claiming real power lies not with Mann but with leaders from outside the state. "Punjab is being run by Delhiites. Outsiders are being handed plum govt posts, while local leaders are sidelined," he said. Referring to the Delhi liquor scam in which several AAP leaders are out on bail, Khera questioned the party's credibility on Punjab's anti-drug campaign. "Half of Delhi's cabinet is on bail. These are the people now lecturing Punjab on fighting drugs," he said. He also targeted Kejriwal for allegedly abandoning his anti-VIP stance. "The man who once refused security, cars, or bungalows now flies by helicopter, lives lavishly, and enjoys Z-plus security — from Punjab's taxpayer money," Khera said. Khera criticised Kejriwal's remarks that Ashu, if elected, would be denied access to development work such as roads and streetlights. "Ashu is not afraid of these threats," he said. "He knows how to get public work done." MSID:: 121781238 413 |
