Charles Barkley donates $250K to San Francisco nonprofit: ‘The people are amazing'
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Despite his documented distaste for San Francisco, NBA analyst Charles Barkley put his money where his mouth is by donating to one of the city's most notable nonprofits. Barkley donated $250,000 to San Francisco Glide Memorial Church, the basketball legend-turned-analyst said during a TNT broadcast for NBA All-Star weekend.
Barkley said he spent a day at the nonprofit in the city's troubled Tenderloin neighborhood.
'The people are amazing,' Barkley said of Glide. 'They work so hard over there. I want to give them a lot of love and some shine. Not only that, I'm going to donate $250,000 to Glide… The people at Glide were awesome.'
Barkley recently said he was not going to this year's All-Star festivities in San Francisco, saying he is 'not going to that rat-infested place out in San Francisco.' However, with Barkley's decision to make the trip, Glide was a beneficiary of the 11-time NBA All-Star's change of heart.
'GLIDE is thrilled to announce a generous donation from basketball legend Charles Barkley following his recent visit, made possible by the Golden State Warriors and TNT,' the nonprofit wrote in a news release. 'This incredible contribution will support GLIDE's mission of breaking cycles of poverty and uplifting San Francisco's most vulnerable communities.'

Oakland native, NBA star Damian Lillard returns to announce $25K scholarship
In years past, Barkley has called San Francisco 'hell' and a city that was full of 'homeless crooks.' It appeared the 1993 NBA MVP turned the corner once All-Star festivities kicked off last Thursday. He admitted on air, 'I actually like San Francisco. I really do.'
'Obviously, we got to do something about the homeless. They need their help. We need to clean it up a little bit,' said Barkley who was received by boos from the San Francisco crowd.
Although Barkley has said plenty of negative things about San Francisco, he gifted Glide with a donation that will help one of the city's most notable nonprofits continue to carry out its mission.
'When the Warriors connected GLIDE with TNT for a special visit from basketball legend, Charles Barkley, we couldn't have imagined he would shout us out on national television and make such a big donation! The Love is real! GLIDE and our community is so grateful for Charles Barkley's gift! Thanks again to TNT and the Warriors! All Star Slam Dunk for GLIDE,' said Dr. Gina Fromer, GLIDE's President & CEO.
Glide celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023. The nonprofit is located at 330 Ellis St.

Boston Celtics jersey history No. 20 - Gary Payton Sr. (2004-05)
Boston Celtics jersey history No. 20 - Gary Payton Sr. (2004-05) The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover. And for today's article, we will continue with the 25th of 31 people to wear the No. 20 jersey, Hall of Fame Boston guard alum Gary Payton Sr. After ending his college career at Oregon State, Payton was picked up with the second overall selection of the 1990 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. The Oakland, California native would also have stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers before he was dealt to Boston in 2004. His stay with the team would span a single a season before he was dealt to the Atlanta Hawks in 2005. During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Payton wore only jersey No. 20 and put up 11.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
