UAE and WHO Collaborate to Launch Database to Combat Malaria in 18 Countries

The Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE), under Erth Zayed Philanthropies, has launched a new initiative to help eliminate malaria and prevent its return in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Fully funded by GLIDE, the project aims to build a comprehensive electronic database analyzing national data from 18 countries across the region. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the University of Oxford, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), and the WHO Global Malaria Programme. Led by WHO's entomology and vector control unit for the Eastern Mediterranean, the project will gather and map historical and current data on malaria transmission, with a strong focus on environmental factors and mosquito breeding patterns—particularly those of the Anopheles mosquito. Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Deputy CEO of GLIDE, said the platform will support risk mapping, regional capacity-building, and evidence-based strategies to maintain malaria-free status across the region. She added that the system will help tailor interventions to national contexts and guide better resource allocation. The database will incorporate entomological surveillance, climate data, and environmental conditions such as rainfall, temperature, and land cover to pinpoint areas at risk of resurgence. Expected to be completed by July 2025, the platform will cover countries in both the EMRO and AFRO WHO regions. While most of the included countries are currently free of malaria, the ongoing presence of vectors and increased human mobility keep the threat of reintroduction alive. Looking ahead, Dr. Al Hosani noted that the platform may be expanded to include other vector-borne diseases, strengthening regional health surveillance and response strategies. UAE Leads Global Fight Against Malaria With Bold Initiatives and Funding

The UAE is strengthening its leadership in the global battle against malaria through major humanitarian efforts, strategic funding, and innovation-driven programmes aimed at eradicating the disease worldwide. Marking 28 years without a locally transmitted case, the UAE remains malaria-free since 1997. Yet the disease continues to threaten millions globally, with the World Health Organisation reporting 597,000 deaths and 263 million cases in 2023 alone. On World Malaria Day, Dr. Farida Al Hosani of the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to ending malaria. Backed by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, GLIDE champions research and evidence-based strategies to drive global elimination efforts. Established in 2019, GLIDE has launched programmes across nearly 30 countries, tackling disease control challenges where health systems are often under-resourced. In April 2024, the Last Mile Initiative announced a second grant of AED55 million to GLIDE, reinforcing the UAE's investment in global health. The country's ongoing support also includes partnerships with Malaria No More, Gavi, and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. The UAE's efforts extend to climate-health intersections. Its Forecasting Healthy Futures initiative and the Institute for Malaria and Climate Solutions focus on the growing link between climate change and vector-borne diseases. Domestically, the Ministry of Health and Prevention maintains a rigorous surveillance and prevention system to safeguard the population from imported cases. With sustained funding, strategic global partnerships, and an unwavering focus on innovation, the UAE continues to play a vital role in the mission to eliminate malaria for good. Bay Area residents reflect on impact of NBA All-Star weekend

San Francisco officials and residents went into NBA All-Star Weekend hoping to show the world their city is something to be proud of. Now, as the banners come down and the crowds of tourists head home, KPIX went back out to Thrive City to ask people how they think it all went. "It puts Chase and the Warriors and San Francisco Bay Area on the map, and I think overall it was a great event," said Erwin Villeros. Erwin Villeros, a Bay Area local, said he was impressed with the weekend's events and feels like most tourists in town left with a good impression. "I want to say they did. I think for the most part, I think San Francisco as a whole, it's a great tourist spot," said Villeros. Bernadette Atanante said she works at SFO. She said she heard from countless tourists traveling here for All-Star weekend, and was happy to see the city put its best foot forward. "I think San Francisco was ready for it because I was here last weekend and it was all clean, like before and presentable. It was nice," said Atanante. Hao Ming Wang traveled here all the way from China for the All-Star festivities. He said he's leaving with fond memories of the city. "Fans traveled way from Japan, China and from other states to show support for All-Star Weekend, and I think it's great. I think the city did a great job, especially for a foreigner like me," said Wang. One of the city's most high-profile critics, Charles Barkley also seems to have warmed up to the Bay. While in town he volunteered at GLIDE in the Tenderloin where president and CEO Dr. Gina Fromer said the NBA legend and analyst got to see all the work that's being done to help folks in need here. "You know you have a perception that everybody's sort of down and out but these are people who genuinely just need support and GLIDE is there every day to do that, and so I think it humbled him you know, where he understands now it's just not GLIDE, all the organizations in the Tenderloin and around our city are doing this work to really make San Francisco a better place for people to live and thrive," said Dr. Fromer. After his visit to GLIDE, Barkley pledged $250,000 to the organization. That's something Erwin Villeros said everyone can get behind. "We got to see another side of him and at the end of the day you know he comes back, he's able to embrace the city itself," said VIlleros. Now, Erwin said it's time to look forward.

Charles Barkley donates $250K to San Francisco nonprofit: ‘The people are amazing'

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Despite his documented distaste for San Francisco, NBA analyst Charles Barkley put his money where his mouth is by donating to one of the city's most notable nonprofits. Barkley donated $250,000 to San Francisco Glide Memorial Church, the basketball legend-turned-analyst said during a TNT broadcast for NBA All-Star weekend. Barkley said he spent a day at the nonprofit in the city's troubled Tenderloin neighborhood. 'The people are amazing,' Barkley said of Glide. 'They work so hard over there. I want to give them a lot of love and some shine. Not only that, I'm going to donate $250,000 to Glide… The people at Glide were awesome.' Barkley recently said he was not going to this year's All-Star festivities in San Francisco, saying he is 'not going to that rat-infested place out in San Francisco.' However, with Barkley's decision to make the trip, Glide was a beneficiary of the 11-time NBA All-Star's change of heart. 'GLIDE is thrilled to announce a generous donation from basketball legend Charles Barkley following his recent visit, made possible by the Golden State Warriors and TNT,' the nonprofit wrote in a news release. 'This incredible contribution will support GLIDE's mission of breaking cycles of poverty and uplifting San Francisco's most vulnerable communities.' Fans flood Thrive City for NBA All-Star weekend: 'Haven't seen the city pop like this in a while' Oakland native, NBA star Damian Lillard returns to announce $25K scholarship In years past, Barkley has called San Francisco 'hell' and a city that was full of 'homeless crooks.' It appeared the 1993 NBA MVP turned the corner once All-Star festivities kicked off last Thursday. He admitted on air, 'I actually like San Francisco. I really do.' 'Obviously, we got to do something about the homeless. They need their help. We need to clean it up a little bit,' said Barkley who was received by boos from the San Francisco crowd. Although Barkley has said plenty of negative things about San Francisco, he gifted Glide with a donation that will help one of the city's most notable nonprofits continue to carry out its mission. 'When the Warriors connected GLIDE with TNT for a special visit from basketball legend, Charles Barkley, we couldn't have imagined he would shout us out on national television and make such a big donation! The Love is real! GLIDE and our community is so grateful for Charles Barkley's gift! Thanks again to TNT and the Warriors! All Star Slam Dunk for GLIDE,' said Dr. Gina Fromer, GLIDE's President & CEO. Glide celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023. The nonprofit is located at 330 Ellis St. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
