Maxwell prepares to shine in new role ahead of T20 World Cup

Cairns, Aug 14 (UNI) As Australia ramp up their preparations for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Glenn Maxwell is prepared to shoulder added responsibility.
With the marquee tournament set to be staged in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell has been working increasingly on his bowling inside the Powerplay to come handy in the sub-continental conditions.
"I think in the sub-continent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on. Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces,' Maxwell told reporters in Cairns ahead of the third T20I against South Africa.
"So it might be something we think about heading forward," he said.
Maxwell is no stranger to bowling in the Powerplay, with his standout moment coming in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final in 2023, where he famously dismissed Rohit Sharma, setting the
stage for a sixth World Cup win for Australia.
So far in the ongoing T20I series against the Proteas, Maxwell has bowled two overs inside the Powerplay. The all-rounder made a big impact in the second match, claiming two key wickets — including that of Proteas skipper Aiden Markram, an ICC report said.
'I'm just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket. I love getting wickets," he said.
"It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the Powerplay and I'm trying
to execute that as well as I can," Maxwell said.
Maxwell also opened up about his floating position in the batting order, having come in at No.5 in the second T20I after batting at No.7 in the first. This follows his stint as an opener in four of the five T20Is against the West Indies.
"I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down. I'm filling holes at the moment," Maxwell said.
"Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end (of the innings)," he said.
"I am trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible," Maxwell added.
With the series tied at 1-1, Australia and South Africa are set to face off in the all-important decider
on August 16.

Breaking into top-10 extra special: Keymer

Vincent Keymer Chennai: Moments after capping off his Chennai Grand Masters campaign with an impressive final-round win over Ray Robson, champion Vincent Keymer was surrounded by many children who were eager for photos and autographs here on Friday. The 20-year-old from Germany, already a crowd favourite, obliged each one with a smile. En route his triumph, he also broke into the world's top-10 in the live ratings for the first time. In an interaction with TOI, Keymer said the trophy is special, but breaking into the top-10 is a milestone he would cherish more. He also spoke about the challenges of being a professional chess player in his home country and more. Excerpts: On the Chennai GM win and whether he expected to go the distance: It has been a great tournament and finishing it with a win is special. Winning 9/9 would have been a bit too good of a tournament. Because this tournament is difficult and even going to a plus score is also difficult, a 7 out of 9 result is a really fantastic one. In terms of classical chess, this is certainly one of my biggest assets. If you go to a tournament where you're the underdog, you want to win. On why he considers himself as an underdog: Not exactly, but Arjun (Erigaisi) had the highest rating and after him, there's Anish (Giri), Vidit (Gujrathi), and then me, we had more or less similar ratings. On what was more special, winning the event or breaking into top-10: This win is special because it's the strongest classical tournament that I have won, but breaking into top-10 is more special. On how this win will help him in the World Cup, scheduled in India later this year: I've been to India a few times. I don't think the conditions will bother me so much. But of course, it will be a nice feeling having played such a good tournament the last time I've been in India. I think it will leave me going to the World Cup with a pretty good feeling. On the Candidates race: I will look at the standings. Pragg (R Praggnanandhaa leads the FIDE circuit board), he kind of won so many top events and is leading by a big margin. Of course, I will try the other routes. I mean, it's incredibly difficult because it's an aim for so many players and very few get those spots. But yeah, for sure I will try my best. Getting there will be a huge achievement. On what would winning a Candidates seat mean back home: I mean, chess is not as big in Germany as it is in India. But I think it's improving. If my results improve and I make more headlines on the international stage, it will also help make chess more popular in Germany. Basically, in Germany, it's not easy being a professional chess player. If you're not at the very top, it's not that easy to make a living. Or in other words, people who play chess often are also very capable of doing things in other fields. And currently in Germany, you get support and financial support only if you're getting to the top. I mean, there are a few players who do it because it's their passion and they are very good. We have a very strong national team of five players who are all in the top-100, more or less. It's just that there is potential for more. On how he deals with the demands of the game: I think it's important to have little breaks. Because for us now, even when we don't play tournaments, there's something else in chess. We have a training camp, or we have a tournament coming up and we need to prepare. It becomes very important to take some time off chess, both for relaxation and to be hungry for chess. Like, if you are only playing, you never feel the urge to get back to chess. But when you have a little break, you feel like you miss it. On his coach Peter Leko (Leko was one of Vladimir Kramnik's seconds during the 2008 World Championship against Viswanathan Anand): We have been calling pretty much every day discussing what to prepare and how to approach the next game. He has been a huge help here. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

How Emiliano Martinez and Ronaldinho helped in convincing Messi to travel to India in December

Argentina's World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had arrived in Kolkata about seven months after he won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and three months later Ronaldinho came calling. The exhibition tour of the two players was a big hit. Before they left, Satadru Dutta, the man who convinced the two footballers to make the trip to Kolkata, requested them to put in a good word with Argentina football icon Lionel Messi. Messi is a longtime teammate of Martinez at the international level. Ronaldinho was Barcelona's talisman when Messi had made his debut with Spanish giants in 2004 at the age of 17. Messi is now on board. He is set to kick off his four-city tour in Kolkata on December 12. From Kolkata he will be in Ahmedabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. Dutta, who has played a role in bringing the likes of Pele and Maradona to Kolkata, is excited. 'The football world is a small circle,' Dutta tells The Indian Express. 'When I got Emi Martinez and Ronaldinho to Kolkata, I told them that I am trying to bring Messi to India and your review will matter. If you can give a good review to his team and even Messi himself, it will help. Touchwood, I executed it in a neat and clean way, they gave a very good review to Messi,' Dutta said. What followed was a chat with Messi's father and agent, Jorge, in July last year in Miami, USA, where the Argentina captain currently plays for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS). While Messi senior told Dutta that he likes the idea, it wasn't going to be possible to do it in 2024. 'I just said if it would be possible over the next one or two years, he said 'I love the idea',' Dutta said. The visit this year won't be Messi's first trip to India. That was made in 2011, when he played a friendly against Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. That also happened to be Messi's first match as Argentina captain. When Dutta met Messi in February this year, he showed him clips from that match, and photos of a 75-foot statue of Messi lifting the World Cup, which he had erected in a Durga Pooja pandal that Ronaldinho inaugurated in 2023. 'He was touched by that,' Dutta said. A multiple-city tour was the only way enough sponsors would come on board to make Messi's trip feasible for the organisers. 'If it is not multiple cities, it won't be financially viable,' Dutta said. After landing in Kolkata on December 12,the next day Messi will attend the unveiling of a statue of his followed by a 'GOAT Concert' and 'GOAT Cup', the venue of which is yet to be decided. The GOAT Cup will be a celebratory seven-a-side soft-touch football match, with Messi teaming up alongside Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes, John Abraham and Bhaichung Bhutia. Tickets are likely to start at Rs 3,500 and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to felicitate Messi during the programme. This will be followed by a flight to Ahmedabad on the evening of December 13, where Dutta says Messi will be attending a private event with some of his sponsors. Messi then moves to Mumbai on December 14. Messi will be in Delhi on December 15, where he will have another GOAT Concert at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Dutta also said that Messi will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'We will seek an appointment from the Prime Minister,' Dutta said.

Yograj Singh Blasts Rohit Sharma's Critics: 'Aapki Hume 5 Saal Aur Zarurat...'

Last Updated: Ex-cricketer Yograj Singh urged Rohit Sharma to play for five more years and slammed critics questioning his fitness. Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has urged Rohit Sharma to play international cricket for five more years because the country needs him. Yograj also slammed the India ODI skipper's critics, saying those speaking about his fitness haven't played cricket, but in the same breath, advised the BCCI to consider helping Rohit stay fit by all means, even if it was putting 'four men on him' and making him run 10 kilometres daily. Yograj was referring to Rohit's Player of the Match 76 (83) in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. He said the knock showed why the Mumbaikar could play till he was 45 years old. It's a big nod of approval for the right-hander among questions on his future with the Men in Blue. He has already retired from Tests and T20Is, and there are murmurs of the BCCI looking to phase him and Virat Kohli out soon. 'I believe you should play domestic cricket; the more you play that, the fitter you'll be. Who got the Man of the Match in the final? Rohit Sharma. So you should only talk about things that you know. If you want to talk about his game and fitness, do that only if you have played at some level. Do you feel ashamed for talking like this?" he added. Rohit's next international assignment would be a three-ODI tour of Australia in November. It could be a key time to determine how BCCI were thinking about his role in the team, and if they believed he was the right man to lead the team to the 2027 World Cup in Africa.
