
Jaecoo 7 SHS - long-term review 2025
To be honest, right now I'm unsure how to answer that question. Not least because I'm not certain of the pronunciation of 'Jaecoo'. (Jai-coo? Jay-coo? J'atchoo?)

Google 'Jaecoo 7 rivals' and you'll find reference to everything from the Dacia Bigster to a Range Rover, which is quite the spread. So what does the 7 rival? And whatever it does rival, does it… outrival them? That's what it's here to answer.
What the Jaecoo 7 isn't – to the surprise of my many interrogators – is an EV. Though, yes, it's a new Chinese arrival (Jaecoo is a sub-brand of state-owned Chery, and arrives in the UK alongside sister brand Omoda), no, this one's not electric. At least not fully electric: the 7 comes in either pure petrol or plug-in hybrid guise.
We've gone for the latter, grandly dubbed the Super Hybrid System (SHS). This sees a 1.5-litre turbo petrol supplemented by an additional e-motor on the front wheels fed from an 18kWh battery, offering a total output of 201bhp and an official 56 miles of electric-only driving. That's a more substantial e-range than many PHEVs. Could come in handy. Could just be an even-heavier second powertrain to lug around.
The 7 also isn't, despite the name, a seven-seater. Room for five only here, within an SUV similar in footprint to the Hyundai Tucson, VW Tiguan and BMW X1. Judged by the attention it's garnering, the 7 is more visually distinctive than any of that crew. Wearing optional Amazonite Blue paint, first impressions are… it looks tidy, right? The merits of that cheese-slicer grille will be, I suspect, a matter of personal taste, but the surfacing is smart and the detailing is neat. There's more than a hint of Evoque and Velar about its straight-edged profile. It looks, to me, quite expensive.

It isn't. At least not by modern SUV standards. The 7 range starts at a smidge over 30 grand, with this plug-in hybrid weighing in at £35,000 with all the trimmings. That looks like strong value if the 7 can mix it with premium offerings like the Audi Q3 and X1, fair value if it's up there with the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage… and a bit on the pricey side if it's playing in the Bigster/MG HS ballpool. We shall see.

However, lately, some automakers have found success with smaller-than-usual offerings, including Ford's Maverick and Hyundai's Santa Cruz, both of which are small pickups. The small truck segment could grow even more with the Bezos-backed Slate pickup, albeit its existence has become a lot more uncertain in the last few weeks as EV incentives go the way of Amelia Earhart. Then, we get to Toyota. They also confirm that the Corolla-based and electrified truck that Toyota is selling in Brazil is decidedly 'too small' for the US. Disappearing incentives/rebates and tariffs are also likely contributing factors as to why we won't get that smaller pickup. Considering even the three-row Grand Highlander is only two inches longer than the Maverick, the platform's size would be right on the money, too. That covers the small SUV and sedan segment; why not bring in an 'entry segment' truck to round things out? Another priority of Ogawa's — and, realistically, all automakers — is getting the most bang per buck at a platform level. 'Products must be refreshed, but the platform can be extended,' he tells AN. 'Toyota's basic policy is to build where we sell and buy where we build,' he starts. Later, we get a real-world example. 'In the case of the Corolla sedan, currently the internal-combustion version is built in Mississippi. But the hybrid is built in Japan, because that plant is more competitive for that product.' We can't imagine any market more ready to chomp at the bit for an affordable, small Toyota pickup than the US. Ford moved 48,041 Mavericks in just the second quarter of 2025. Arguably more importantly, a whopping 60% of Maverick buyers were new to the brand. Some of those customers inevitably migrated from Toyota, and that's got to hurt. We think the chances are high that Toyota wants to bring a competitor to the market. Chancellor's attempt to intervene in car finance scandal branded ‘disgraceful'
Rachel Reeves' efforts to intervene in the supreme court case on the car finance scandal were 'unprecedented and disgraceful' and send a 'really bad message' to consumers that the government is willing to defend wrongdoing by banks, Treasury committee member and Lib Dem MP Bobby Dean has said. While the supreme court largely sided with finance companies on Friday – helping lenders avoid a £44bn compensation bill – Dean said the chancellor had gone too far to show she was on the side of business. That included a controversial bid to intervene in the supreme court hearing in January, in which she urged judges to avoid handing 'windfall' compensation to borrowers. That attempt was ultimately rejected. 'I thought it was pretty unprecedented and pretty disgraceful,' said Dean, who sits on an influential parliamentary committee which scrutinises City firms, regulators and the Treasury. The chancellor had also been considering overruling the supreme court's decision with retrospective legislation, to help save lenders billions of pounds, in the event that it upheld the entirety of October's court of appeal ruling, the Guardian revealed last week. 'What message does it send to consumers that the industry can do wrong, the courts can support the claim that they've done something wrong, but the government is ready to intervene and defend the industry that's done wrong, instead of defending the consumer? I think that's a really bad message to put out,' Dean said. 'I feel like this government sometimes is too keen to demonstrate it is on the side of business, and is sometimes not understanding the rights of consumer,' he added. Reeves intervention efforts followed intensive lobbying by the car loan industry, which feared that the supreme court would uphold last October's shock ruling by the appeal court. That October ruling suggested commission payments paid by lenders to car dealers were unlawful, unless explicitly disclosed to borrowers. It could have opened the door to billions of pounds of compensation claims against companies including Lloyds Banking Group, Santander UK, Barclays and Close Brothers, and result in a redress scheme that rivalled the £50bn payment protection insurance saga. Lobby group the Financing and Leasing Association (FLA) – which represents car lenders – had warned the government that a big compensation bill could push some lenders into failure, while others would offer fewer or more expensive loans to claw back their losses. That could restrict options for borrowers who relied on credit. City bosses were also warning the Treasury that ongoing uncertainty over the scandal was deterring international investment in the finance industry, and was therefore putting the UK's economic growth at risk The FLA's head of motor finance Adrian Dally said that the lobby group was 'pleased' with the supreme court's ruling, and felt its concerns had been heard by Treasury and regulators. He confirmed the FLA had been speaking with the Treasury nearly every week in the wake of the court of appeal ruling in October, including about its concerns on the car finance case. However, he rejected suggestions the Treasury had prioritised the industry over consumers. 'We absolutely disagree with that because, ultimately, this [car finance] industry is a vital part of the nation's infrastructure, and enables millions of people to get to work, to get to school, and that was put at risk by these court cases. And ultimately, we believe the industry's interests and the consumers' interests are aligned on this.' Dean added that compensation schemes can give consumers confidence to borrow and invest, knowing will be protected when companies take advantage of customers. 'Obviously, the best industry is one where these redress systems are not needed in the first place, because people play by the rules.' The Financial Conduct Authority is due to confirm whether or not it will press ahead with a compensation scheme before the stock markets open on Monday morning. A Treasury spokesperson said: 'It is vital that consumers have access to motor finance to enable them to spread the cost of a vehicle in a way that is manageable and affordable. 'We respect this judgment from the supreme court, and we are working with regulators and industry to understand the impact for both firms and consumers. 'We recognise the issues this court case has highlighted, and we are already taking forward significant changes to the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Consumer Credit Act.'

A BUSY UK motorway which is used by 130,000 drivers a day has been closed for the entire weekend, causing chaos for airport and port travellers. Motorists heading for Belfast City Airport or the port have been told to add extra time for their journeys as one of the city's main roads has been shut. 2 Friday saw the closure of the eastbound carriageway of the M3 Lagan Bridge from Nelson Street on-slip to Dee Street. It is due to re-open at 6am on Monday. The closure is one of two weekend's worth of disruption on the road, which is undergoing a £400,000 maintenance scheme to replace bridge bearings. The westbound carriageway, from Bridge End to the M2 Foreshore, will be closed to traffic from 9pm on August 15 until 6am on August 18. Northern Ireland 's Department for Infrastructure (DfI) warned delays were 'inevitable' but added the works had been planned to minimise disruption. Traffic heading eastwards on the M3 over the Lagan Bridge will be affected by the current closure. The road will be closed between the M2 and Dee Street, with traffic being diverted off at the Nelson Street off-slip. There will also be no access to the bridge from Nelson Street on-slip. A diversion route is in place which follows: Nelson Street A2 Great Patrick Street A2 Dunbar Link Waring Street Donegall Quay Middlepath Street A2 Eastbound Middlepath Street on-slip Major motorway closed after lorry bursts into flames as drivers face hour-long delays and 7 miles of congestion The news comes after huge delays were reported on the M54 following a horror crash involving a number of vehicles. Two lanes were shut eastbound between Junction 2 for Wolverhampton and Junction 1 for Featherstone following a serious collision. Emergency services were called to the incident at around 2pm on Friday, where four people are thought to have been injured. A female passenger and male driver in one of the cars were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, where they are being treated for serious injuries. A child and lorry driver were also taken to hospital for minor injuries. While at the end of last month, the M6 northbound in Warwickshire was closed between J3A for Coleshill and J4 for the M42, after a lorry caught on fire. 2
