It has been a disastrous 2025 season for Houston Astros star slugger Yordan Alvarez so far.
After slumping to start the year, with just 3 home runs, 18 RBIs and a .210 batting average, Alvarez was placed on the injured list with a hand injury.

His last appearance came on May 2, although Alvarez was trending toward returning this weekend with one final test — a live batting practice session on May 30 — standing in the way of his return.

Unfortunately, Alvarez appears to have failed that final test, according to The Athletic's Astros beat writer Chandler Rome.
"Yordan Alvarez felt discomfort after his live BP yesterday and the Astros sent him for imaging," Rome reported on May 31.
Adding: "General manager Dana Brown said it showed a fracture that is '60 percent healed.' Alvarez will be shut down, but Brown hopes he can return 'in the near future.'"

Needless to say, this is yet another concerning injury update for the Astros, who have dealt with their fair share of issues this season.
Although Brown provided a sliver of hope with the "in the near future" quote, it's never a good sign when a player goes from a day away from returning to "shut down."
This news came ahead of a 16-run drubbing at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, which finished with a 13-run deficit.
The loss drops the Astros to 31-27 on the year, mere percentage points behind the Seattle Mariners for first place in the AL West. Considering all of their injuries, Houston has to be pleased with the overall result.
