Astros' Jeremy Pena nears return in latest injury update
The Houston Astros have run into an injury bug while experiencing a midseason slump in the week of the MLB trade deadline. Key players who are currently rehabbing injuries on the injury list include outfielder Yordan Alvarez, third baseman Isaac Paredes, as well as pitchers Cristian Javier and shortstop Jeremy Pena. Heading into the Astros series against the Washington Nationals on Monday, Houston was able to give an update on Jeremy Pena, who's been rehabbing a small rib fracture he sustained after getting hit by a pitch against the Chicago Cubs on June 27. According to The Athletic's Chandler Rome, Pena hit against live pitching at the Astros' Florida Complex over the weekend and will be returning to practice in Houston before their series against the Nationals. This is great for the Astros as they haven't been able to find the same success in July as they did in previous months. They have a record of 10-12 this month. Before Jeremy Pena went down with the injury, he was having the best season of his young career. He was elected as a 2025 All-Star while posting a .322 batting average, .278 on-base percentage, .867 OPS, and 4.5 WAR, hitting 11 home runs and 40 RBI through 82 games this season. Houston hasn't made a set time for Pena to return to the lineup, but he's expected to come back before the end of the month.

Astros' Isaac Paredes exits Mariners game with potentially serious injury
The post Astros' Isaac Paredes exits Mariners game with potentially serious injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros are squaring off against the Seattle Mariners in a pivotal AL West showdown. The Astros are attempting to recover from a pre-All-Star Game skid that allowed the Mariners to gain ground in the division. But the team is now dealing with yet another injury. Isaac Paredes was forced to exit Saturday's game in the third inning with 'what looks like a significant hamstring injury,' per John McClain on X. Paredes led off the inning with a deep drive that bounced off the wall in left field. But he appeared to pull his hamstring while running as he could be seen limping to first base, via Talkin' Baseball. The Astros have been hit hard by injuries this season. The team is already missing slugger Yordan Alvarez and star shortstop Jeremy Pena. Paredes has been leading off for Houston with Pena sidelined. Now, he too could miss time. If Paredes lands on the injured list, he would be the 16th Astros player on the IL. Isaac Paredes could join a crowded Astros IL The Astros acquired Paredes in the blockbuster Kyle Tucker trade with the Cubs this offseason. The sixth-year veteran is having a strong debut season with Houston, leading the team in home runs and runs scored. Paredes made his second career All-Star Game this year, replacing Jose Ramirez for the AL. However, the Astros' third baseman skipped the Midsummer Classic as he dealt with a family matter. Houston can ill afford to lose another key player to injury. After overtaking the Mariners in the AL Central and building a commanding lead, the team hit a slump. The Astros have lost six of their last seven games and their division lead is down to four games. The Mariners have an opportunity to get within two games of Houston with a series sweep. And the Astros will now likely be without Paredes. While Pena received an encouraging update prior to the All-Star Game, it's still unclear when he'll be able to return to the lineup. Alvarez is also reportedly making his way back to the Astros. But there's no timeline for the three-time All-Star's return. Alvarez has been out with a hand injury since the beginning of May. Astros' Yordan Alvarez takes big step toward injury return
The post Astros' Yordan Alvarez takes big step toward injury return appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros may lead the American League West by five games, but they are dealing with injury trouble at the moment. Houston received an encouraging Yordan Alvarez update on Friday, however, via Chandler Rome of The Athletic. 'Yordan Alvarez is swinging again,' Rome wrote on X, formerly Twitter, before providing a number of other important Astros updates. 'Chas McCormick has been reinstated from the IL and Kenedy Corona was optioned. Spencer Arrightetti and Cristian Javier headed to Double-A Corpus Christi this week. Luis Garcia is going to Single-A Fayetteville. Jeremy Peña is in Florida.' Alvarez is dealing with right hand inflammation. The Astros — who play the Seattle Mariners this weekend — will closely monitor his status. The fact that Alvarez is swinging a bat is especially encouraging given the fact that he is battling a hand injury. Alvarez has been limited to 29 games played during the '25 season because of injuries. During that time, the 28-year-old has slashed just .210/.306/.340 to go along with a .646 OPS and three home runs. Although those numbers are far from ideal, Alvarez features the talent of a serious MVP candidate. He made three consecutive All-Star teams from 2022-2024 and finished within the top 10 of AL MVP voting twice during that span, even earning a third place finish in 2022. At 56-40, the Astros hold a five-game lead over the 51-45 Mariners in the AL West. The Astros-Mariners three-game weekend series is certainly important given the standings. A Mariners' sweep would instantly place Seattle back in serious contention for the division lead. An Astros sweep would lead to an extremely convincing division advantage, though. Friday night's first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM EST in Seattle as the Astros look to get the job done on the road. As for Yordan Alvarez, updates will continue to be provided on his injury status as they are made available. Streaking Astros open series against stumbling A's
July 24 - Even with four regulars on the injured list, Houston Astros manager Joe Espada stuck with his scheduled off days for Jose Altuve and Cam Smith on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Undaunted, the Astros continued their resilient play with a 4-3 victory that capped a three-game series sweep and concluded a six-game road trip with four consecutive wins. The Astros will open a seven-game homestand on Thursday, starting with a four-game series against the Athletics. Houston is one of three teams tied for the American League lead with 60 victories. Even with 17 players on the IL, including frontline starters Yordan Alvarez, Jake Meyers, Jeremy Pena and Isaac Paredes, the Astros have maintained a stellar clip while excavating their organizational depth. "We're all in it," Espada said. "I trust those guys. I'm watching them out there, and they're playing their (behinds) off. And as a manager, that's all you can ask for. "They're leaving everything on the field, and when you have a ton of guys pulling together and rowing the same way, that's what you want. We're going to grind it until the end." That mentality has come to represent these Astros. A winning culture established through a decade of success certainly plays a role in what Houston has accomplished thus far this season. Still, the Astros have committed to finding a path to victory despite their gutted roster. "As a team, what's our identity? Who do we want to be when it's time to show up? For us, it's the grinders," Astros first baseman Christian Walker said. "It doesn't matter if it's the leadoff spot or the seven-hole or the four-hole, we trust everybody to come through in a big situation. "You can feel it. It's a fun group to be a part of." Jason Alexander (1-0, 8.40 ERA) will be recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to start for the Astros on Thursday. The right-hander will make his third appearance and second start this season for the Astros. Alexander opened the campaign with the Athletics, recording no decisions and an 18.00 ERA across four relief appearances before the Astros claimed him off waivers on May 18. Alexander went 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) with Sugar Land. Alexander opposed the Athletics for the first time in his career on June 17, and he allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six-plus innings in a 13-3 road victory. Right-hander Luis Severino (3-11, 5.10 ERA) is set to take his turn in the Athletics' rotation. He has allowed the most earned runs (67) in the American League, and he also paces the AL in losses while sharing the major league lead in starts (21). Severino snapped a five-start losing streak by allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings in an 8-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday. Severino is 2-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 12 career appearances (11 starts) against the Astros. In two starts vs. Houston this year, he is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA. The Athletics lost 2-1 to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, their fourth consecutive loss and fifth in six games since the All-Star break. They are a season-worst 20 games below .500. "The break, obviously coming out of it, it can sometimes be challenging just to find your rhythm and get back into the groove," Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said. --Field Level Media

Astros get discouraging news on injured All-Star slugger
The Houston Astros might have to wait just a little bit longer to see the return of Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez has been nursing a hand fracture since early May. On Monday, he provided an update on his potential return, and it's not what the Astros want to hear. 'Where the pain is in the hand, it's a little bit difficult to have surgery there,' Alvarez said, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. 'That's why I say I need a little bit of rest right now. It's an area where normally we don't get surgery in that area. But I think it isn't something I'll have to keep dealing with.' It feels like any day now Alvarez could return from his injury, but that day seems to be getting further and further away. Prior to his injury, Alvarez had yet to get going at the plate, hitting .210 with 3 home runs and a .646 OPS in 29 games, well below his usual All-Star standard. Despite the injury, the Astros have survived. The team is 57-42 with a four-game lead in the AL West, and have been a top hitting team in the majors thanks to Jeremy Pena, rookie Cam Smith, Jose Altuve, and Issac Paredes.
