LAHAD DATU – A man has come forward to deny allegations linking his daughter to the Zara Qairina Mahathir case that recently went viral on social media.
According to a statement circulated on social media, the man, who claimed to be the father of the teenager whose photo was posted on the same platform, strongly denied the allegations.
"I am the father of this student and I strongly deny the slander linking my daughter to the Zara's case.
"My daughter attended school there from 2022 (Form One) until 2024 (Form Three) and in early 2025, she received an offer and transferred to a Vocational College in Lahad Datu, where she is currently studying," he said in the statement.
Following this, the man warned that he would take legal action against anyone who attempted to link his daughter to the case.
"I will not hesitate to file a civil lawsuit against any individual who tries to associate my daughter with this case.
"For your information, a police report has been lodged against a TikTok account that uploaded photos and videos of my daughter on their account. Although they have apologised and deleted the video, some individuals are still spreading false news," he said. Regarding developments in the Zara's case, Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob has called for a full and professional investigation in accordance with the SOPs to determine whether the case involved criminal elements or not.
He also urged the public to always verify the authenticity of news before sharing it publicly or allowing it to go viral on social media.
Regarding developments in the Zara's case, Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob has called for a full and professional investigation in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to determine whether the case involved criminal elements or not.
"I also urge the school, the Sabah State Education Department and the Education Ministry to investigate and provide reports on compliance with SOPs, school discipline and safety of the school and hostel," he said.
He stressed that he has not made any assumptions, speculations or accused any individuals or groups.
However, after two weeks without news or investigation results, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and netizens have risen up as the matter went viral.
"Now NGOs and various groups will continue to shout 'Justice For Zara' until there is an answer from the authorities. They will not stop until those involved are brought to justice," he said.
At the burial site where Zara was laid to rest, it is understood that the police only conducted security checks during the exhumation process, which was carried out last Saturday and Sunday.

Sipitang MP tears up in Dewan Rakyat over Zara Qairina's death

KUALA LUMPUR: Sipitang member of parliament Datuk Matbali Musah could not hold back his tears in the Dewan Rakyat when speaking about the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was from his constituency. He said the 13-year-old should have been protected at school as it should be a safe environment for learning. "Allow me to share the tragic story of the late Zara, a child from the Sipitang parliamentary constituency, whose death brought grief to her family and sparked concern across the nation. "This child should have been protected at the safest place, the school where she sought knowledge," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan today. He said it was time for anti-bullying legislation to be enacted. He said there should be clear guidelines to protect victims and strict action must be taken against perpetrators. "The government must not let the passing of Zara be in vain. "She will not return, but her story must serve as a constant reminder in our minds." He said every child has the right to safety, to be loved and to be protected. Matbali thank the government for its serious commitment to addressing the issue transparently. "On behalf of the constituents of Sipitang, I wish to express my gratitude to the prime minister, the federal government, the Sabah chief minister, the state government and the lawyers representing the family of the late Zara, as well as all Malaysians, for their concern and serious commitment to addressing this issue in a transparent and thorough manner." Zara Qairina was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory at 3am on July 16. She was reported to have fallen from the third floor of the dormitory and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital. She was pronounced dead the following day. The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) has ordered an inquest into the death of Zara Qairina.

Investigating officer did not follow procedures in Zara Qairina case: CID chief

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 By: Pan Eu Joe, FMT Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Police revealed today that the officer in charge of investigating the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir failed to follow proper procedure by not requesting a post-mortem. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar ( pic ) said Zara's death occurred under suspicious circumstances, in which a post-mortem was warranted. 'Although Zara's mother had signed a statutory declaration declining a post-mortem, the investigating officer should have applied for one,' Kumar told a press conference at Bukit Aman police headquarters. He said the investigating officer and his superior would be referred to Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standard Compliance Department for not following procedure by ordering a post-mortem. A task force from the Bukit Aman CID had been sent to Sabah to take over the investigation. Earlier today, the Attorney-General's Chambers ordered an inquest into Zara's death. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. Her mother, Noraidah Lamat, lodged a police report on Aug 3, saying she noticed bruises on her daughter's back when preparing the body for burial. Kumar said the ongoing investigation by the task force in Sabah had uncovered elements suggesting that Zara may have been a victim of bullying before her death. He said police have recorded statements from 82 individuals. He also revealed that 124 students had undergone counselling following the incident. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah Bersatu demands zero tolerance on bullying and urgent education reform

Syafiqah KOTA KINABALU (Aug 13): 'Parents send their children to school to gain knowledge and learn self-discipline, not to get bullied, physically and mentally tortured, or worse—lose their lives,' declared Dayang Nor Syafiqah binti Abdul Hamid, Bersatu Sipitang Srikandi chief, in a powerful call to action on Wednesday. She was responding to the national outrage over the tragic death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir, which has exposed deep, systemic failures in safeguarding students—especially in boarding schools. 'No parent should ever have to bury their child and be left wondering if more could have been done to protect them. This is not an isolated incident— it is the result of a broken system that has failed to prioritise children's safety,' Syafiqah said. She added that she was deeply outraged and saddened that the alleged bullying, which led to this tragic incident, had taken place in a religious school — a place entrusted to nurture faith, discipline, and the highest standards of moral conduct among its students. She thus demanded the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Sabah Education Department (JPN Sabah) immediately adopt a zero-tolerance policy against bullying — and pair it with urgent, concrete reforms: 1. Mandatory CCTV installation in all hostel corridors and common areas. 2. Zero interference from schools in the filing of police reports. 3. Creation of a Student Protection & Bullying Response Unit under JPN Sabah. 4. Automatic post-mortem and legal inquest for any unnatural student death. 5. Deployment of more qualified counsellors and robust mental health support systems. 6. A prominently displayed Student Welfare Bill of Rights in all schools. 7. An Independent Review Panel to investigate serious incidents and publish findings. 'These are not optional measures. They are life-saving safeguards. Zara's death must be the turning point — not just another statistic in a growing list of preventable tragedies,' she said. Syafiqah also called for the introduction of a Parental Rights Charter, guaranteeing parents full access to incident records and eliminating barriers to lodging police reports. 'Every hour lost in reporting weakens investigations, destroys evidence, and denies justice. In Zara's case, the Attorney-General's Chambers has already flagged serious investigative gaps — this must never happen again,' she stressed. She urged leaders in the Sabah State Government and across political lines to act decisively, without delay. 'This is bigger than politics. This is about our children's lives, safety, and dignity. Zara deserved better. All our children do. Sabah Bersatu Srikandi will work with all stakeholders to make these reforms a reality—immediately,' Syafiqah concluded.
