Car Deal of the Day: a cut-price Mazda MX-5 to soak up the summer sun in

Auto Express6 days ago
Arguably the best sports car money can buy
Engaging handling; old-fashioned thrills
Just £296.57 a month
The UK is currently basking in its fourth heatwave of the year, so what better way to enjoy this than with a drop-top?
The Mazda MX-5 is more than just a drop-top, though, because it's the best-value sports car on sale in Britain, and a multiple Auto Express New Car Awards winner.
You can bag the keys to one of the automotive world's greats for less than £300 right now – but you'd better hurry because deals like this won't hang around for long. Advertisement - Article continues below
Carwow Leasey is offering the terrific MX-5 Roadster for just £296.57 a month right now. This four-year deal requires a £3,853.84 initial payment, while you can enjoy 6,000 miles of top-down motoring a year.
This deal is for the entry-level 1.5-litre Prime-Lime – but, remember, Mazda doesn't make a bad MX-5, and to many enthusiasts the basic package is the best. It still comes with 16-inch black-painted alloys, cruise control and sat-nav, along with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Because this is the soft-top Roadster and not the hard-top RF (Retractable Fastback), the switch from top-up to top-down motoring requires just a flick of your wrist. Then you can hear the rorty exhaust note from that fizzy little 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine.
With 130bhp and just a 1,106kg kerbweight to lug around, performance is brisk, with 0-62mph taking 8.3 seconds. But the MX-5 isn't really about speed – it's a wonderfully involving driving experience, with a rifle-bolt-sharp six-speed direct-action gearbox, and light, engaging steering.
We can't think of many cheaper ways to get good old-fashioned summer thrills for such a low price.
The Car Deal of the Day selections we make are taken from our own Auto Express Buy A Car deals service, which includes the best current offers from car dealers and leasing companies around the UK. New £218m Essex railway station to open this autumn

A new £218 million railway station is on track to open in the UK this autumn. Beaulieu Park Station in Chelmsford, Essex, is expected to welcome commuters later this year following a two-year multi-million pound construction project. Operated by Greater Anglia, the station will ferry commuters to and from London Liverpool Street in just 40 minutes. With three platforms, two car parks and a taxi rank, the stop will be served by the Beaulieu Parkway relief road and the Chelmsford North-East bypass. The railway hub is the first new station to be built on the Great Eastern Main Line in more than 100 years. Essex County Council, in collaboration with Chelmsford City Council and Network Rail, secured £218 million of government funding to begin construction in March 2023. According to Essex County Council, Beaulieu Park will 'ease pressure on the existing train station and reduce car journeys into the city centre.' The Beaulieu Park project was originally scheduled for completion in 2026 as part of the new Chelmsford Garden Community. Chelmsford's Garden Community has planning permission for 4,350 homes, local shops, health services and the first all-through primary and secondary school in Essex. Councillor Louise McKinlay said: 'Essex is pioneering the type of infrastructure-supported growth that's on the national agenda, being bold and ambitious in our commitment to future-proofing the county and putting investment where it's most needed. 'The new Beaulieu Park station is a testament to this, and the role it will play in transforming travel in this part of Chelmsford and surrounding areas will have a positive impact for years to come. 'The progress being made to build the station is remarkable and I want to thank everyone involved for their hard work to get the project to this stage. I'm very much looking forward to the station opening later this year.'

Chris Evans' CarFest moving to Silverstone for 2026

CarFest, an annual music and motoring festival founded by radio presenter Chris Evans, is moving to the Silverstone circuit for 2026. The event, which usually takes place at Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire, was set up by Virgin Radio UK host Evans, 59, in the 2010s to showcase live music and motoring track shows. From next August, the event moves to Silverstone, the Northamptonshire motor racing circuit that is home to Formula One's British Grand Prix and where scenes from Brad Pitt's F1 movie were filmed. Evans said: 'This move opens up possibilities we've never had before, more space, more cars, more ways to surprise and delight our audience and most importantly, an opportunity to raise even more money for UK children's charities. 'The heart of CarFest will always be the same, with charitable fundraising and entertainment, providing unforgettable experiences for all ages, at the core of our mission. As one of the UK's premier entertainment destinations, Silverstone gives us the perfect stage for the next chapter in our story.' He said: 'I wanted to share this incredibly exciting news today, so anyone who wants to join us and say farewell to the amazing home we have had at Laverstoke Park Farm has the opportunity to join us for one last amazing party there this coming weekend. 'Together, we can deliver an even bigger and better event while raising vital funds for charity.' This year's line-up includes music from rock band The Boomtown Rats and Scottish outfit Travis and talks with a number of chefs, wellness experts and more. Silverstone chief executive Stuart Pringle said: 'Silverstone has evolved into a year-round destination for world-class events, and we are thrilled to be working with CarFest for next year's event. 'For more than a decade, CarFest has inspired a devoted community of fans, becoming a true highlight of the British festival calendar. As the ultimate summer celebration, blending music, motors, food, family fun, and unforgettable experiences, CarFest is a perfect fit for Silverstone.' CarFest has run annually since 2012, with the exception of 2020, when it was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. The 2026 CarFest at Silverstone will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, August 27-30, with tickets and further details to be announced soon. CarFest 2025 is taking place between August 22 and August 24 at Laverstoke Park Farm.

UK consumer sentiment recovers to strongest level since October

Sentiment among UK consumers recovered to its strongest level since before the autumn budget last year, according to new figures. The latest monthly S&P Global UK Consumer Sentiment Index found that surveyed consumers were still relatively downbeat but saw sentiment move higher after the latest cut to interest rates. Earlier this month, the Bank of England voted to cut its base interest rate from 4.25% to 4%. The CSI, which surveys more than 1,500 households, reported a reading of 47.0 for August, rising from 45.1 in July. The reading is the highest since October. Any reading below 50 points to negative sentiment, with a reading above 50 suggesting positive feeling among consumers. Households reported the strongest sentiment about their personal finances for 13 months, although this remained in firmly negative territory. There was also an improvement about how households viewed the labour market, with rises in job security and activity at work. Maryam Baluch, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: 'August CSI data comes hot on the heels of the recent rate cut decision made by the Bank of England earlier in the month. 'Data collection began just a day after the central bank's announcement, providing a timely snapshot of sentiment in the wake of monetary policy easing. 'Encouragingly, the data reveals a slight revival in household confidence, which is a telling sign that the easing of monetary policy has been received positively by households across the country.'
