Lalu welcomed with folk dance at memorial event

Time of Indiaa day ago
Patna: The occasion was the second death anniversary of former
legislator Arun Kumar Yadav's father Bhuwaneshwar Singh Yadav. But when RJD president Lalu Prasad reached there, he was welcomed with "Launda Dance", a kind of folk dance popular in the Bhojpuri belt.

The Launda Dance, popular in parts of Bihar, is performed exclusively by men dressed as women. It has long been a source of entertainment in rural festivities but is increasingly rare in modern times.
Lalu, who is battling serious health complications, travelled to Agiaon village earlier in the day to pay floral tributes to the late Bhuwaneshwar Singh Yadav. He joined havan rituals, offered prayers and wished peace for the departed soul.
What drew considerable attention was the choice of welcome. A video that has since gone viral shows colourfully attired male dancers performing to folk songs, aiming to please the RJD chief as he arrived in a van. Upon hearing of the performance, large numbers of local villagers gathered at the venue to watch and join in the festivities.
According to those familiar with the matter, Lalu has long enjoyed Launda Dance. The last such performance attended by him was in Sept 2023 at the official residence of his wife, former CM Rabri Devi, shortly after the RJD returned to power in alliance with the JD(U).
RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan strongly defended the performance. "Launda Dance highlights the rich culture of the state. While he was the CM, Laluji initiated steps to keep alive the dying Launda Dance. Those opposing this folk dance have no idea of Bihar's rich culture," Gagan said on Saturday.

In Bihar, Rahul lets Tejashwi be in the driving seat

Patna, Aug 17 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday made it clear that in Bihar, where his Voter Adhikar Yatra was kicked off, he would like Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD to be in the driving seat. At one point of the rally, Yadav drove a jeep with Gandhi on the passenger seat. Yadav, the INDIA bloc's de facto chief ministerial candidate in the elections due later this year, joined Gandhi at Sasaram where the Yatra was flagged off and the two leaders were together till they retired for the day in Aurangabad. In his speeches, Yadav, a former deputy CM of Bihar, referred to the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha as 'hamare bade bhai (my elder brother)". For most part of the day, the two leaders sat together atop an open vehicle, waving at the crowds that stood on both sides of the road. However, at one place, Gandhi decided that they move forward in a jeep with Yadav behind the steering wheels. The picture was complete with junior alliance partners, CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya and Vikassheel Insan Party president Mukesh Sahni, settling on the rear seat. The sight was reminiscent of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which passed through Bihar last year, barely a month before the Lok Sabha polls. Yadav, on his part, seemed pleased with the way things were going. He shared a picture of himself driving along his allies, all of them his senior in terms of age, on his X handle. 'Let's take Bihar on the path of justice, economic equality, industralisation and inclusive development", wrote the RJD leader, by way of caption. NDA to hold workers' meetings from Aug 23

Patna: The NDA has announced that joint meetings of party workers will be held in all 243 assembly constituencies of the state from Aug 23. The decision was taken at an NDA meeting held at the JD(U) office in Patna on Sunday. At the same meeting, leaders flagged off 40 teams of Mahila JD(U) as part of the 'Sushasan Ka Saar-Aapke Dwar' campaign. These teams will conduct intensive booth-level outreach in constituencies to showcase the achievements of CM Nitish Kumar over the past 20 years, particularly in the sphere of women's empowerment. JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha said the assembly-wise workers' conferences would be organised in seven phases over about a month. "Teams have been formed under the leadership of 14 senior leaders of all NDA partners. All 14 teams will go to each assembly with the resolution of '225 in 2025 and phir se Nitish' to boost the morale of NDA workers," he said. Praising Nitish's governance, BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal said, "CM Nitish transformed Bihar with his social engineering. The opposition parties are busy confusing the public with the help of absurd issues instead of discussing the development agenda." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo LJP (RV) state president Raju Tiwari added, "The opposition has no concrete issue and NDA will get a bigger majority than in the 2010 elections. There was huge public support in the NDA district conferences held earlier and our workers are full of enthusiasm and zeal." HAM(S) Bihar chief and MLA Anil Kumar stressed that the "double engine NDA govt is continuously working in public interest." Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) state president Madan Chaudhary said, "The people have seen the development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar." Rahul Gandhi earns praise for ‘gentlemanly' behaviour as he offers water to Mallikarjun Kharge, Lalu Prasad in Bihar

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has earned a lot of praise from social media users for his 'gentlemanly behaviour' for offering glasses of water to party president Mallikarjun Kharge and RJD chief Lalu Prasad, both several years his senior, in Bihar, on Sunday. The INDIA bloc heavyweights were sharing the stage in Sasaram town for the launch of 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', which will cover over 1,000 km across 25 districts of the state within a span of a fortnight. A video of the event has gone viral on the Internet in which Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, can be seen pouring water into glass tumblers and handing those over to Kharge and Lalu, before himself taking a sip in the sweltering afternoon. Netizens were impressed by Rahul Gandhi's kind gesture and said that moments like these 'truly reflect the spirit of values and unity.' 'Rahul Gandhi is such a loving and respectful person. It's truly heartwarming to see him sitting together with Lalu Prasad Ji and Mallikarjun in this amazing video, where Rahul is even serving water. Moments like these truly reflect the spirit of values and unity,' said a social media user. Another added, 'This gesture embodies Bharatiya sanskaar — respect for elders, humility in leadership, and compassion at heart.' 'So much respect for elders!' a user said. Another said, 'Sanskari hai admi.' However, a few users questioned why the Internet was making such a big deal about it, asking, 'What's so great about it? Don't people in your family serve water to guests? Haven't you seen younger people serve water to older people?' The Raebareli MP, who has transformed self-effacement into a style statement, was supposed to be the final speaker at the function, an honour usually reserved for the most senior person, as per the unofficial protocol for such public events. However, Rahul Gandhi, who is the undisputed star attraction of the yatra, took the mic ahead of the Congress president and the RJD supremo.
