Newport launches Semiquincentennial events, celebrates the city's underrated role in the American Revolution
Q:
First, Newport's role in the Revolution is pretty underrated. Tell us why the city played such a key role.
Bertrand:
The march to Yorktown actually started in Newport. Newport was occupied by British forces for three years, during which time more than half of the city's population fled. After the British left, the French arrived in 1780, and that Franco-American Alliance would ultimately help bring the war to an end. We're excited to share this chapter of history and use the 250th to show people the essential role that Newport played in America and its courageous pursuit of independence.
Q:
On Friday, you're hosting an event called Two Lights for Liberty. What is this celebration all about?

Bertrand:
Two Lights for Liberty is Newport Historical Society's official kickoff celebration for the 250th anniversary of American independence – or what we call the 'semiquincentennial.' It's going to be a fun night of food, drinks, and revolutionary revelry, including a guest appearance from Paul Revere.
Revere's famous ride took place on this date in 1775, so state houses across the country will put two lights in their windows to commemorate the occasion. We're going even bigger. The Colony House was the Rhode Island State House at the start of the Revolution, and tonight it will be beautifully illuminated, inside and out.

Q:
Following Two Lights, you have an exhibition coming up in May about the role of media in the War for Independence. Tell us more about that.
Bertrand:
Yes, this is one of our signature programs for the 250th. 'Newport 1775: Whose Side Are You On?' opens May 15 in our headquarters on Touro Street and will be on display through the end of 2025. The exhibition is about the choices of ordinary people in Newport and how they shaped history. The media, of course, played a role in informing their opinions, so the exhibition features a 17th century Franklin printing press and an interactive display with newspapers from Patriots and Loyalists. One of the really interesting components is that we ask visitors to choose a side and then examine that choice as they go through the exhibition. It's going to be a really dynamic experience.
Q:
What else does the Newport Historical Society have planned for America's 250th birthday?
Bertrand:
Two Lights for Liberty is just the beginning. Inside a half-mile stretch of Newport, you can literally take a walk in the shoes of the men and women whose stories shaped our city. It's our job at the NHS to make that history come alive today. We're offering walking tours, an incredible lineup of speakers in our Tavern Talks series, and in July we will host the 'French in Newport' living history event. There's so much more to come, so if you are interested in history or are just curious about Newport, we invite you to join us! You can learn more

Portugal police launch new search for Madeleine McCann
Portuguese police have launched a new search for Madeleine McCann in Portugal's Algarve region where the three-year-old British girl disappeared in 2007, following a request from German authorities. The country's investigative Judicial Police said in a statement it was executing a European Investigation Order on behalf of the public prosecutor's office in the German city of Braunschweig, which in 2022 formally identified German citizen Christian Brueckner as an official suspect in Madeleine's disappearance. It added that "a wide range of investigations, namely search warrants" would be carried out this week in Portugal's Municipality of Lagos and all evidence seized would be handed over to Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). The search for traces of the child's body will focus on an area between Praia da Luz, a civil parish belonging to Lagos, and one of the houses where Brueckner lived when Madeleine disappeared 18 years ago, according to news reports by CNN Portugal and German newspaper Bild. Braunschweig prosecutors told Reuters "criminal procedural measures" related to the case were taking place in Portugal involving the BKA and Portuguese law enforcement but did not provide further details. London's Metropolitan Police said it was aware of searches carried out by the BKA in Portugal, adding the force was not present there but would "support our international colleagues where necessary". German police said in June 2020 that Madeleine was assumed dead and that Brueckner was likely responsible. Brueckner has denied any involvement and has not been charged with any crime related to the case. The convicted child abuser and drug dealer is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve. The last search for Madeleine was carried out in May 2023, when the police combed an inland reservoir in the Algarve but didn't find anything.

Patriots' Stefon Diggs Sends Five-Word Message Upon Arrival to OTAs Amid Latest Drama
Patriots' Stefon Diggs Sends Five-Word Message Upon Arrival to OTAs Amid Latest Drama originally appeared on Athlon Sports. By now, everyone has seen the viral video of Patriots' receiver Stefon Diggs with a 'pink substance' on a boat over Memorial Day weekend. The drama from the footage only intensified when Diggs failed to appear at OTAs on May 28. However, the four-time Pro Bowl receiver arrived at Monday's OTA with a five-word message as he jogged onto the field. Advertisement "Nice to see you all," Diggs said. There are many feelings fans could have about this return, as Diggs seems rather jolly arriving to the field following the drama of the past week. But, for Patriots fans wanting Diggs to be the No. 1 option for Drake Maye in 2025, like the plan was when he signed, this is the best news possible. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels spoke with the media this morning, expressing his excitement about working with the players at OTAs, which includes Diggs today. Stefon Diggs got in off-field trouble recently, less than three months after joining the Taormina-Imagn Images "It's a voluntary part of the year; we know that. As a coach, selfishly you love it when they're all here ... (Diggs is) here today, and we're excited to have an opportunity to work with the guys that are out here and available to us," McDaniels said. "I know he's staying up on the information and the material, and there's so many things and opportunities for us to teach all of our guys going forward ... so, I'm not concerned about Steph." Advertisement The Patriots' leading pass catcher in 2024 was tight end Hunter Henry. Tight end Austin Hooper was fourth on the team in receiving yards. Only three of the Patriots' top seven pass catchers were receivers last season. DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte led the receivers with 621 and 589 receiving yards, respectively. The Patriots had an obvious need at the position this offseason if they want to see growth from Maye in his sophomore campaign. New England's answer was to sign Diggs to be Maye's No. 1 option. Despite Diggs' history of drama, with Vrable as the new head coach and a shift in culture underway in New England, the Patriots decided to take a chance on the All-Pro receiver. Now, after a week full of drama, Diggs' five-word message as he arrived at OTAs this morning is a welcoming sign for fans. Only time will tell if Diggs will work out with the Patriots. Chuck Todd says his tires were slashed after Trump called him out
Veteran broadcaster Chuck Todd, who left NBC News and launched a solo podcast earlier this year, said in an interview this weekend that someone slashed his car's tires after President Trump criticized him during Trump's previous White House stint. 'There was direct correlation, right? He'd call your name out, [and] you'd get weird phone calls, you'd get weird death threats,' Todd said in the interview Saturday with Times Radio, a British station owned by conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch. 'I got my tires slashed in front of my house.' Todd told Times Radio host Maddie Hale that he addressed the issue of retaliation with the president. 'Honestly, I've had conversations with him. I said, 'You know, when you name-check people who are not in the public square, who do not have the protection you bring a level of —'' the former 'Meet the Press' moderator said. 'He views it as, 'Oh, it's good publicity.'' But Todd added that he does not believe Trump has malicious intent when he calls people out. 'I don't think he's doing it to create a security problem for these people, but what he wants to do is deflect blame,' Todd said. 'But the reality is that it creates a security problem.' Todd, who lives in Arlington, Va., just outside of Washington, D.C., was speaking in reference to reports that judges, lawmakers and others who have crossed Trump have increasingly faced threats, and many have beefed up security since his first presidency. 'More public officials in Washington have their own security detail now than at any point in the 30 years that I've covered Washington, and it's simply because of the name-checking, the threats that take place now from him,' Todd said. The White House didn't immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
