Ringgit rises against US dollar amid heightened uncertainties
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit ended higher against the US dollar, supported by a weaker US Dollar Index (DXY) which fell by 0.21 per cent to 97.979 points amid heightened uncertainties, an economist said.
At 6 pm, the local note appreciated to 4.2370/2450 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2435/2480.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ongoing military conflict between Israel and Iran continues to dominate market attention at a time when investors are bracing for the upcoming US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, scheduled for June 17-18.
"Euro, British pound and Swedish krona were gaining against the greenback, while emerging market currencies were mixed with dollar-ringgit oscillating within a tight range.
"The USD/MYR started off in the morning session at RM4.2513 but later in the day appreciated towards RM4.2450,' he told Bernama.
He noted Brent crude oil is currently hovering around US$73.84 per barrel suggesting that the crude oil market is fairly calm today compared to last Friday where it hit around US$77 in the intraday session.
"Expect market sentiments to be guarded as they observe how the military conflict would evolve,' he said, adding that the downside risks to growth are clearly visible.
Mohd Afzanizam said that this week's FOMC meeting will be critical as to how the US Federal Reserve would navigate such challenges along with weak fiscal position by the US government and disruptive trade policies adopted by the current administration.
At the closing, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies.
It rose versus the Japanese yen to 2.9397/9455 from 2.9448/9482 at Friday's close, but weakened against the British pound to 5.7555/7664 from 5.7482/7543 and decreased vis-à-vis the euro to 4.9077/9170 from 4.8906/8958 previously.
The ringgit was mixed versus its ASEAN counterparts.
It improved versus the Thai baht to 13.0389/0696 from 13.0807/1018 at Friday's close and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.51/7.53 from 7.55/7.56.
However, it fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.3102/3167 from 3.3077/3118 and edged down vis-a-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 260.4/261.1 from 260.2/260.6 previously. - Bernama

1,300 shops gutted in devastating fire in India's Kolkata
NEW DELHI: At least 1,300 shops were gutted in a devastating fire Monday at a marketplace in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, officials said, reported Xinhua. However, no loss of life or injuries have been reported in the blaze. The fire broke out early Monday in the 150-year-old Khidirpur market of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. Following the fire, authorities rushed 20 fire tenders to the spot to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to adjacent areas. A senior fire service official said the blaze in the market spread rapidly due to the densely congested area. The presence of highly flammable materials such as gunny sacks, edible oil, and butter in nearby warehouses intensified the flames, the official said. Police have registered a case to ascertain the cause of the fire. However, a short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire. –BERNAMA

Two Retirees Lose Over RM1 Mln To Online Investment Scams
-- Photograph for illustrative purposes GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- Two retirees lost over RM1 million after falling victim to online investment scams recently, according to Penang police. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a statement that in the first case, the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters received a report from a 55-year-old man on June 12, alleging that he had been scammed by an online investment company for RM827,120. 'In early April, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook promising high returns and subsequently got in touch with a woman…via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a seven per cent return on each investment made,' he said, adding that the man was told to download the company's app to register as a member and invest through the platform. Hamzah said the victim made 22 fund transfers into six different company accounts between April 19 and May 26. 'He realised he had been scammed after being unable to withdraw profits totalling RM23,241,952 as shown on the investment app and subsequently lodged a police report,' he said. In a separate case, he stated that a 56-year-old retired factory technician lost RM321,250 after falling victim to another online investment scam, adding that the victim lodged a police report on June 12 at the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters. Hamzah stated that around December of last year, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Instagram that promised high returns. He then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp, who promised a 30 per cent return within three months. He said that on March 21, the victim made the first fund transfer of RM20,000 through the company's app, and within less than three months, he received RM14,150 in profits. 'He made 11 additional fund transfers between March 27 and June 3 into four different company accounts linked to the scheme, but realised he had been scammed after he could not withdraw RM280,000 in purported profits and was instead asked by the suspect to pay an RM120,000 withdrawal fee,' he added. He said investigations are ongoing, and both cases are classified under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies.
