King Charles III Reaffirms Commitment to Youth in Canada with The King's Trust Canada
OTTAWA, ON, May 27, 2025 /CNW/ – During his first official Canadian visit as King, His Majesty King Charles III yesterday reaffirmed his lifelong dedication to young people as he met four Members of The King's Trust Canada's inaugural Youth Council; one 360 employment program participant; Mark Fell, Chair of The King's Trust Canada Board; Sarah Vickery, Director of Programming; and Cynthia Caron Thorburn, Interim Co-CEO. All from The King's Trust Canada party were at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, where they had been invited to watch His Majesty and Her Majesty, Queen Camilla, plant a native species tree in honour of their visit.
His Majesty spoke with the group, asking about their experience with The King's Trust Canada and specifically referencing the organization's Skills Academy program, a free program designed to equip young people with essential skills that employers are seeking.
This interaction showcased His Majesty's steadfast commitment to improving the lives of young people, a cause he has championed for decades through The Prince's Trust in the UK and now globally through The King's Trust. Since 2011, The King's Trust Canada has created pathways to employment for young people facing barriers by providing free skills training, work experience and networking opportunities.
'Meeting His Majesty was such a special and meaningful experience,' said King's Trust Canada Youth Council member, Ahdithya Visweswaran, who also is a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Visweswaran, an advocate for bilingualism through public education, went on to say about the royal visit, 'It was an honour to be part of the traditions and protocols that are so uniquely and authentically Canadian, especially at a time when we're reflecting on our identity and what it means to assert our sovereignty. His Majesty was so warm and genuinely curious, asking us about The King's Trust has impacted our lives – a memory I'll hold onto.'
'We are truly honoured by His Majesty's recognition of the work we do to close the skills, network, and experience gaps that many young Canadians face when they look for meaningful employment,' said Cynthia Caron Thorburn, Interim CEO of The King Trust Canada. 'To introduce members of our Youth Council and other programmes to His Majesty brings the journey of our young people full circle.'

Two relatives of wanted Hong Kong activist Joseph Tay taken in for questioning
A cousin of wanted Hong Kong activist Joseph Tay and her husband were taken away for questioning on Thursday morning, the Post has learned. A source said the couple were escorted to Tsing Yi police station to assist with an investigation into the Canada-based activist's alleged national security law violations. 'They were expected to leave Tsing Yi police station at around 11am,' the insider said. The source later confirmed that the pair left around that time. Tay, a 62-year-old former actor and founder of Canada-based non-profit Hongkonger Station, was among six activists in December last year who had HK$1 million (US$127,600) bounties placed on their heads for allegedly violating the 2020 national security law. He is among 19 activists wanted on suspicion of contravening the Beijing-decreed legislation. Tay has been charged with inciting secession and collusion with foreign forces after he allegedly posted videos calling for international sanctions on social media platforms via his channel between July 2020 and June last year. The Canadian national left Hong Kong before the national security law came into force. Earlier this year, he stood as a candidate for the Conservative Party in the country's federal elections. Trump says he plans to double steel tariffs to 50%
WEST MIFFLIN (Pennsylvania): U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he planned to increase tariffs on foreign imports of steel from 25% to 50%, ratcheting up pressure on global steel producers and vowing to deepen his trade war. 'We are going to be imposing a 25% increase. We're going to bring it from 25% to 50% the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States,' he said at a rally in Pennsylvania. The levy increase will take effect next week. The steel tariffs, along with levies on aluminum, were among the earliest put into effect by Trump when he returned to office in January. The tariffs of 25% on most steel and aluminum imported to the U.S. went into effect in March, and he had briefly threatened a 50% levy on Canadian steel but ultimately backed off. Under the so-called Section 232 national security authority, the import taxes include both raw metals and derivative products as diverse as stainless steel sinks, gas ranges, air conditioner evaporator coils, horseshoes, aluminum fry pans and steel door hinges. The total 2024 import value for the 289 product categories came to $147.3 billion with nearly two-thirds aluminum and one-third steel, according to Census Bureau data retrieved through the U.S. International Trade Commission's Data Web system. By contrast, Trump's first two rounds of punitive tariffs on Chinese industrial goods in 2018 during his first term totaled $50 billion in annual import value.

Cops seek answers following car-ramming at Liverpool parade

(AP pic) LIVERPOOL : Football fans from the UK and abroad rallied around Liverpool today, vowing to stand by the port city after a car-ramming injured dozens of people, four seriously, and devastated celebrations for its Premier League win. As investigators sought to answer the key question about why a driver ploughed into the crowds as the team's parade wrapped up late yesterday, messages of support flooded in. A 53-year-old white British man, believed to be the driver of the car, was arrested, but police have said they are not treating the incident as terrorism. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You'll never walk alone,' said former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, echoing the club's famous anthem which only hours before had echoed joyfully around the city. King Charles III, who is currently visiting Canada, said he was 'deeply shocked and saddened'. 'It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances,' he said in a statement.
