Venus Williams, 45, accepts wildcard for WTA DC Open
The five-time Wimbledon winner and two-time US Open champion is set to compete in the Washington tournament that runs from July 21-27.
"I'm excited to accept a wild card to the DC Open. There's something truly special about DC: the energy, the fans, the history," Williams said. "This city has always shown me so much love and I can't wait to compete there again."
Former world number one Williams played in the event in 2022 and competed several years for Washington in World Team Tennis.
Williams won Olympic singles gold in 2000 at Sydney and alongside younger sister Serena captured women's doubles gold in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
Williams,who has won 49 career singles titles and 22 doubles crowns, has Sjogren's syndrome, an auto-immune disease that can leave people weakened and with joint pain.

Last-gasp Van Poortvliet try edges England to Argentina victory
Replacement Van Poortvliet, 24, crossed with less than two minutes to go as Steve Borthwick's tourists followed up last weekend's win in La Plata with another victory before they finish the season by facing the USA in Washington next Saturday. Swiatek hits back at critics after Wimbledon win
The 24-year-old was seeded eighth at the All England Club after a disappointing first half of the season, though she is fourth in the rankings after a run to the Bad Homburg final two weeks ago. Swiatek was asked at her post-match press conference whether winning Wimbledon so convincingly was a fitting riposte to those who have criticised her over her performances. "For sure the past months, how the media sometimes describe me, and I've got to say unfortunately Polish media, how they treated me and my team, it wasn't really pleasant," she said. "I hope they will just leave me alone and let me do my job because obviously you can see that we know what we are doing, and I have the best people around me. "I have already proved a lot. 'Surreal' Swiatek will climb to third in the rankings on Monday after winning her sixth Grand Slam title on a blazing day on Centre Court. "It's something that is just surreal. I feel like tennis keeps surprising me, and I keep surprising myself.
