The 45-year-old American, listed as inactive on the WTA Tour website, has not played a tour event since losing a first-round match last year at Miami.
The five-time Wimbledon winner and two-time US Open champion is set to compete in the Washington tournament that runs from July 21-27.
"I'm excited to accept a wild card to the DC Open. There's something truly special about DC: the energy, the fans, the history," Williams said. "This city has always shown me so much love and I can't wait to compete there again."
Former world number one Williams played in the event in 2022 and competed several years for Washington in World Team Tennis.
Williams won Olympic singles gold in 2000 at Sydney and alongside younger sister Serena captured women's doubles gold in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
Williams, who has won 49 career singles titles and 22 doubles crowns, has Sjogren's syndrome, an auto-immune disease that can leave people weakened and with joint pain.

Yankees' Judge fastest to reach 350 MLB homers

Judge's 350th career home run came in his 1,088th game -- beating the previous mark set by Mark McGwire who needed 1,280 games to hit the milestone. Judge is the fourth player to reach 350 home runs as a Yankee, after Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez and current teammate Giancarlo Stanton. The homer was Judge's 35th of the season -- three behind the 38 of Seattle's Cal Raleigh atop the season list. Judge has hit more than 50 homers in three separate seasons, belting 58 last year to help the Yankees reach the World Series. He leads the American League in batting average (.358), on-base percentage (.465) and slugging percentage (.739). The reigning American League Most Valuable Player is set to serve as captain of the AL team in Tuesday's All-Star Game in Atlanta after winning the fan vote. © 2025 AFP

Last-gasp Van Poortvliet try edges England to Argentina victory

Replacement Van Poortvliet, 24, crossed with less than two minutes to go as Steve Borthwick's tourists followed up last weekend's win in La Plata with another victory before they finish the season by facing the USA in Washington next Saturday. Centre Seb Atkinson and full-back Freddie Steward also crossed as fly-half George Ford kicked seven points for the visitors, who claimed their sixth straight Test win -- their best run in five years. "We found a way in the end," captain Ford told Sky Sports. "I like our fight, our togetherness, showing how much we care. "There was some great stuff, we should have scored more tries but the attitude of the group is great," the 32-year-old added. The Pumas led by three points at the interval thanks to tries from centre Lucio Cinti and winger Ignacio Mendy, but were unable to claim a first home success over England since 2009. They host Uruguay in Salta next Saturday before opening their Rugby Championship campaign against New Zealand on August 16. Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi handed flanker Pablo Matera his 111th appearance as the former skipper became the country's most-capped player, taking over from Agustin Creevy. England were forced into a late change as co-captain Jamie George withdrew from the game hours before kick-off after being called up to the British and Irish Lions squad. Theo Dan started at hooker instead of George with centre Luke Northmore set for his England debut, replacing the injured Henry Slade. Northmore started his international career in superb fashion, providing the assist for midfielder partner Atkinson to open the scoring after just four minutes. Ford, who was England's only captain with George watching from the stands, added the extras to make it 7-0, having set up the try with a delicate cross-kick. Despite England controlling the first half, Contepomi's side led 17-14 at the break as Cinti and Mendy crossed either side of Steward's effort. Ford, who played his 100th Test last weekend, brought the sides level 17-17 to set up a tense closing 25 minutes with the visitors on top. Argentina displayed ill-discipline throughout, and Matera was shown a yellow card with a quarter of the match to play before Van Poortvliet replaced Ben Spencer at half-back. Despite their dominance, England were finding it difficult to breach Argentina's defence with the first draw in 44 years between the sides looking likely.

Swiatek hits back at critics after Wimbledon win

The 24-year-old was seeded eighth at the All England Club after a disappointing first half of the season, though she is fourth in the rankings after a run to the Bad Homburg final two weeks ago. Swiatek was asked at her post-match press conference whether winning Wimbledon so convincingly was a fitting riposte to those who have criticised her over her performances. "For sure the past months, how the media sometimes describe me, and I've got to say unfortunately Polish media, how they treated me and my team, it wasn't really pleasant," she said. "I hope they will just leave me alone and let me do my job because obviously you can see that we know what we are doing, and I have the best people around me. "I have already proved a lot. I know people want more and more, but it's my own process and my own life and my own career. "Hopefully I'm going to have a freedom from them, as well, to let me do my job the way I want it." 'Surreal' Swiatek will climb to third in the rankings on Monday after winning her sixth Grand Slam title on a blazing day on Centre Court. The former world number one destroyed the hapless US 13th seed in just 57 minutes and the American admitted she was "frozen by nerves". Swiatek, who had not previously gone beyond the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, said she was shocked to have won the grass-court Grand Slam, where she was a junior champion in 2018. She is better known for her prowess on clay, winning four French Open titles as well as the 2022 US Open, played on hard courts. "Who would have expected that?" she said. "It's something that is just surreal. I feel like tennis keeps surprising me, and I keep surprising myself. "I'm really happy with the whole process, how it looked like from the first day we stepped on a grass court. I feel like we did everything for it to go in that direction without expecting it, just working really hard." Swiatek said it was difficult to rank her Grand Slam triumphs but that winning on grass made it more "special and unexpected". "For sure, it feels like the emotions are bigger because at Roland Garros I know I can play well, and I know I can show it every year," she said. "Here, I wasn't sure of that. I also needed to prove that to myself." Swiatek said it had been special to be presented with the Venus Rosewater Dish by Catherine, Princess of Wales. "Overall the process of getting the trophy from her royal highness was something surreal," she said. "Since I'm a kid, honestly I'm a big fan of the royal family. It was amazing. I really appreciate that. I'm really grateful that it was her royal highness giving the trophy." © 2025 AFP
