Kirby Air Riders release date announced as creator reveals why he's making it
One of the most unexpected announcements during the Switch 2 reveal in April was Kirby Air Riders, a sequel to 2003's Kirby Air Ride on the Nintendo GameCube.
The original didn't set the world alight, with overly simplistic one-button controls and limited modes, so a sequel seems like an odd proposition – especially when it comes not long after fellow racer Mario Kart World.
While some fans speculated that Nintendo greenlit Kirby Air Riders as a favour to director Masahiro Sakurai, in exchange for a new Super Smash Bros. game, a 45-minute Nintendo Direct dedicated to Kirby Air Riders revealed the idea for a sequel came from elsewhere.
'You might be wondering why I ended up creating a new Kirby Air Ride game,' Sakurai said in the presentation. 'There was a strong request from [Shinya] Takahashi, head of software development at Nintendo, and [Satoshi] Mitsuhara, the president of HAL Laboratory, Inc. at the time.
'At the time, I was working on the DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and wasn't really able to get around to the request. But I managed to complete a written proposal at high speed.'
In the presentation, Sakurai covered all the new additions (and general basics) of Kirby Air Riders in some detail. The biggest change is that it's no longer a one-button racing game. Along with the 'boost charge' to drift around corners for bursts of speed, there's now a 'special button' to unleash power-ups specific to each character.

These range from attacks to damage other racers, with Kirby unleashing a sword flurry, while others like King Dedede possess a turbo hammer to launch themselves forward at great speed. Others on the roster include Kirby staples such as Meta Knight, Magalor, and Banana Waddle Dee. More Trending
Whereas Kirby was the only playable character in the original who could ride different machines and use copy abilities to transform, this has been expanded to the whole roster in the sequel. Both the characters and the machines possess different stats too, in a similar vein to Mario Kart.
City Trial, a core mode from Kirby Air Ride, is back too. Here you roam an open area with up to 15 other players, either CPUs, locally, or against others online, to collect power-ups to boost your machine's stats, before you compete in a mini-game with your upgraded vehicle to determine the winner. These range from racing sprints, battles, a gliding mini-game, and Target Flight where you hit score panels.
For anyone who has played the original, it all looks familiar but with more robust options and a greater level of chaos. Sakurai has promised there are 'still a lot of things' in Kirby Air Riders they 'weren't able to cover' in this Direct too, so it might be expanded in other ways.
As confirmed in the Direct, Kirby Air Riders launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20, 2025, priced at £58.99 in the UK. As such, this might be Nintendo's Christmas title, although we're still waiting on a release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Indiana Jones not the only Xbox game coming to Switch 2 next year claims insider
Microsoft is bringing another Xbox game to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026 according to an insider, alongside the recently announced Indiana Jones And The Great Circle. Over the past few months, Microsoft has repeatedly said it will support the Nintendo Switch 2 but there's been no actual games to show for it. That all changed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, where Microsoft debuted a trailer for the Indiana Jones And The Great Circle DLC, titled The Order Of Giants. Shortly afterwards, a splash screen confirmed the title is coming to the Switch 2 next year. This is the first Xbox-published game confirmed for Nintendo's console, yet according to an insider, it isn't the only one planned for release in 2026. According to NateTheHate, who has been very accurate when it comes to Nintendo Direct announcements recently, Microsoft will bring Bethesda's space epic Starfield to the console too. 'Indiana Jones & The Great Circle won't be the only Bethesda game coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026,' they wrote in a post on X shortly after the Gamescom announcement. 'See that planet? You can go there. 'Aside from landing on PlayStation 5… Starfield is planned for release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.' Indiana Jones & the Great Circle won't be the only Bethesda game coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in that planet? You can go from landing on PS5… Starfield is planned for release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. — NateTheHate2 (@NateTheHate2) August 19, 2025 A PlayStation 5 port of Starfield has been rumoured for months, but it still hasn't been announced. With Microsoft's multiplatform push though, a port feels inevitable – with some speculating it could be tied to the next expansion. More Trending The same insider previously claimed Xbox is planning to release Switch 2 ports of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator, although neither of those have been confirmed. Microsoft released several Xbox-published games on the original Switch, including Ori And The Blind Forest, Ori And The Will Of The Wisps, Pentiment, and Grounded. As for the Indiana Jones DLC, The Order Of Giants is set to be released September 4, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A synopsis reads: 'Mysteries of the Roman empire await Indy, where forgotten catacombs twist into something far more sinister.' Elsewhere at Gamescom Opening Night Live, Activision debuted the first gameplay footage from Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7, while the show closed with a sequel to Black Myth: Wukong. Black Myth: Wukong sequel revealed but don't expect it anytime soon
Gamescom Opening Night Live closed the show with a follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong, based around a new character from Chinese mythology. The success of Black Myth: Wukong made a follow-up inevitable, but developer Game Science has announced the next game in the series sooner than you'd expect. Almost exactly a year after Black Myth: Wukong was released, the studio has revealed its successor titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui. It's described as a new entry in the Black Myth series and not a direct sequel to Wukong, although it will still be rooted in Chinese mythology. A brief teaser trailer was shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live, where we see Zhong Kui riding a giant tiger. Zhong Kui is described as a ghost-catching God who wanders between hell and earth. There is no release date or even a window, but Game Science has explained in a Q&A on its website that the game is 'little more than an empty folder at this stage'. In other words, don't expect it to come out for a few years yet. 'With the project being little more than an empty folder at this stage, there's hardly any game footage we could share,' the studio wrote. 'To keep all hands focused on development, we decided to deliver a CG short to let everyone know that a new project has kicked off.' Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be a single-player action role playing game like its predecessor, but the studio wants to make 'refreshing changes' to the formula. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. When writing about its reasons for picking this project over a direct sequel to Wukong, the studio wrote: 'Upon completing the journey with the Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step – to build more distinct gaming experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design. More Trending 'Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors. We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things, while taking a hard look at our past flaws and regrets.' The studio also reaffirmed DLC for Black Myth: Wukong is on the way, and possibly alluded to a sequel, adding: 'And to all the friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won't end here.' Black Myth: Zhong Kui is planned for PC and 'all mainstream console platforms', although it's unclear if that will include the Switch 2. Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 launch date and beta announced in gameplay trailer
Activision has showcased what to expect from this year's Call Of Duty, including a new PvE mode and expanded progression. After a mountain of leaks, Activision has officially pulled back the curtain on Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, the upcoming shooter received its first gameplay trailer which confirmed a number of details, including the title's release date. As outed by leaks beforehand, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches worldwide on November 14, 2025 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Notably, despite promises from Microsoft to bring the franchise to Nintendo's console as part of a 10-year deal, there was no mention of a Switch 2 version. If you want to try it out before this date, Activision is holding an open beta for all players on October 5, 2025. You can get three days early access to the beta starting on October 2 if you pre-order Black Ops 7 too. The game will remain at the usual price of £69.99 in the UK. Like Black Ops 3, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 features a co-op campaign for up to four players. The story itself is set in 2035, 40 years after the events of Black Ops 6, as David Mason leads an elite team on a covert mission to the Mediterranean city of Avalon. Based on the trailer, it looks like it's leaning harder on the psychological elements, with roads suspended in the air, horror-esque sequences, and even a giant Godzilla-like character. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Weirdly, after it leaked last week, Activision spoiled what you unlock when you complete the campaign. After you complete all the missions, you'll unlock the 'Endgame', which is a 1-32 player PvE experience set on the Avalon map. In this mode, you'll complete missions to level up your character and gain abilities, but if you die, you'll lose all your progress and have to start over. At launch on the multiplayer side, Black Ops 7 will have sixteen 6v6 maps (including three from Black Ops 2) and two 20v20 Skirmish maps, with environments spanning futuristic Tokyo to the frozen landscape of Alaska. More Trending The omnimovement system from the last entry will also be back, albeit in an 'evolved' fashion according to Activision. As part of the Co-Op Campaign in Black Ops 7, the team is unleashing something bold: Endgame. You've never seen anything like this in a Call of Duty Campaign before. — Call of Duty (@CallofDuty) August 19, 2025 While not the main focus of the trailer, Zombies will also be back, along with the next edition of Dead Ops Arcade – a top-down twin stick shooter which was last seen in Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. For the first time in the series, player progression will be spread across every mode in Black Ops 7. So when you're playing the campaign, you'll earn XP and weapon upgrades in the multiplayer, Zombies, and Call Of Duty: Warzone. More is set to be announced about this year's Zombies and multiplayer modes at Call Of Duty Next, which will take place on September 30, 2025.
