Public roles not ‘political souvenirs', think tank tells PM
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Saturday that political appointments made by a government to qualified individuals do not constitute an abuse of power.
PETALING JAYA : A think tank today cautioned that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's justification of political appointments as rewards for party service sends a dangerous message.
In a statement, the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) said the prime minister was effectively saying that public roles could be handed out 'like political souvenirs rather than earned through merit and competence'.
'Political appointments are not favours to be exchanged. They are positions of public trust that carry real responsibility.
'Whether or not appointees come from political backgrounds, all such appointments must be based on merit, integrity, and professional experience.
'Only through a transparent and performance-driven process can we ensure that our public institutions are led by individuals who can serve the people effectively,' its CEO Aira Azhari said.
Speaking at the PKR national congress on Saturday, Anwar said political appointments made by a government to qualified individuals did not constitute an abuse of power.
He said such appointments were a 'reward' that individuals deserved for their service and contributions to the success of the political party that eventually formed the government.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh praised Anwar for his remarks, saying on Sunday that the government finally 'understood' Barisan Nasional's way of doing things.
However, IDEAS said that state-owned enterprises carried significant fiscal risk, and that even a handful of poorly governed institutions could cause serious economic damage.
It said appointing capable, ethical, and experienced directors was not just good practice, but an economic necessity.
'While there are political realities the prime minister must deal with, transparency, accountability and good governance are not principles that can be compromised,' Aira said.

He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. Anwar said the Cabinet continues to operate as usual and that temporary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that they had submitted their leave applications and resignation letters, which will take effect on June 17 and July 4, respectively. 'In the next Cabinet meeting, I will ask (other) ministers to cover (the portfolios of the Economy Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry),' he said. At the same time, the prime minister said he has instructed the secretaries-general of both ministries to continue carrying out their responsibilities. 'All secretary-generals have been asked to continue (their duties), because we are in the midst of serious negotiations... Asean, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), China and the United States, including over (US President) Donald Trump's tariff proposals,' he added. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi were defeated in the 2025 PKR elections held last month. Rafizi failed to retain his position as PKR deputy president after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi lost in the contest for the vice-president post. Following their resignations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement that the Prime Minister had received letters from both ministers requesting leave and to step down from their Cabinet positions. Myanmar junta extends ceasefire again following quake

(AP pic) YANGON : Myanmar's junta has extended a post-earthquake truce, after the expiry of a previous humanitarian ceasefire it was accused of flouting with a continued campaign of air strikes. The junta initially declared a truce in the many-sided civil war after a huge quake in late March killed nearly 3,800 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The truce has been extended before, although conflict monitors say fighting has continued, including regular air strikes. A statement from the junta information team yesterday said there would be an extension of the armistice – which expired May 31 – until June 30. This would 'facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in earthquake-affected areas', it said in the statement. It added that the state was 'intensively engaging in reconstruction of damaged government offices and departments, public residences and transport facilities'. The ceasefire would also allow the country to hold 'a free and fair multi-party democracy general election', according to the statement. The country's junta chief said earlier this year that a long-promised election will be held by January, the first in the war-torn nation since the military staged a coup in 2021. In the statement, the military also warned it would still strike back against any offensives by the array of ethnic armed groups and anti-coup fighters. The announcement comes after Malaysian foreign minister Mohamad Hasan used a regional meeting last week to call for the extension and expansion of a ceasefire 'beyond the currently affected zones'. Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The bloc has led so far fruitless diplomatic efforts to end Myanmar's conflict since the junta deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Drama around Tengku Zafrul's exit seems orchestrated, says Kedah Umno

PETALING JAYA : Kedah Umno is uncomfortable with what it has called 'a drama' and 'political manoeuvres' orchestrated by PKR following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's decision to quit Umno. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said the statements released by PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari and PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim make the entire matter seem 'planned and celebrated'. 'The series of statements from PKR figures seem to send a direct message to Umno that etiquette does not matter in our cooperation and that political moves can be arranged without regard for the sensitivities of the main partners in the unity government,' he said in a statement today. Shaiful called for a stop to the 'drama' surrounding Tengku Zafrul for the sake of stable, honest and sincere political cooperation. 'We cannot continue to sacrifice our principles for the sake of power. Umno is ready to cooperate, not to be a plaything in the political narratives of others.' Shaiful also branded Tengku Zafrul, who is the investment, trade and industry minister, a 'first-class political tourist'. Yesterday, Amirudin said Tengku Zafrul's entry into PKR could bolster the party's credibility and expressed confidence that they could work well together. Kamil said Tengku Zafrul, being a corporate figure, could bring 'added value' to the party given the latter's experience. However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said any such application to join the party would have to go through the usual processes, taking into account the views and perspectives of the party's partners in the unity government. Tengku Zafrul's decision confirms rumours that spread in February that he would be leaving Umno and joining PKR before his term as a senator expires at the year end.
