No urgency for Cabinet reshuffle, says PM

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) said there is no urgency to carry out a Cabinet reshuffle at this time. He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. Anwar said the Cabinet continues to operate as usual and that temporary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that they had submitted their leave applications and resignation letters, which will take effect on June 17 and July 4, respectively. 'In the next Cabinet meeting, I will ask (other) ministers to cover (the portfolios of the Economy Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry),' he said. At the same time, the prime minister said he has instructed the secretaries-general of both ministries to continue carrying out their responsibilities. 'All secretary-generals have been asked to continue (their duties), because we are in the midst of serious negotiations... Asean, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), China and the United States, including over (US President) Donald Trump's tariff proposals,' he added. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi were defeated in the 2025 PKR elections held last month. Rafizi failed to retain his position as PKR deputy president after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi lost in the contest for the vice-president post. Following their resignations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement that the Prime Minister had received letters from both ministers requesting leave and to step down from their Cabinet positions. Selangor Umno Youth urges Tengku Zafrul to step down from minister's post
SHAH ALAM: Selangor Umno Youth has described Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz's decision to resign from Umno and join PKR while remaining in Cabinet as irresponsible and disappointing, Sinar Harian reports. Its leader, Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, said that such an action should not be emulated and does not set a good precedent in the country's political practices, the Malay language daily reported. "His position in the Cabinet was previously based on his capacity as a senior Umno leader. When he leaves the party and joins PKR, he should also step down from his government position," he told Sinar Harian. Selangor Umno Youth also urged the Umno leadership to maintain the number of ministers and deputy ministers from the party in the unity government Cabinet. "We want the number of ministers (seven) and deputy ministers (five) from Umno to be retained. "This is important to maintain the party's voice in the government," Imran stressed further in a press conference late Monday (June 2) night. Previously, it was reported that Tengku Zafrul had submitted his resignation letter from Umno to join PKR. He also confirmed that the resignation letters as a member of the Umno supreme council, Kota Raja Umno chief and Umno member have been submitted to the party leadership. In addition, Tengku Zafrul confirmed that he had expressed his intention to join PKR to its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul also expressed his gratitude to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and fellow party members for their support and encouragement throughout his involvement in Umno.

Matching grant sought for eco-friendly waste facilities

Kota Kinabalu: Kinabatangan-Corridor of Life Tourism Operators Association, Sabah (KiTA) is seeking a matching grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment for proper waste management and river cleaning initiatives at two villages in the Kinabatangan area. During a recent courtesy call on its Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, President of KiTA Johnny Lim presented an application for the matching grant for the Ministry's consideration. She noted that KiTA's undertaking to put up a new waste disposal centre at Kg Bilit and Kg Sukau is an important environmental initiative aimed at protecting the environment and enhancing eco-tourism sustainability in the Kinabatangan area. In his briefing, Lim said the proposed project involves three key components, namely construction of the village waste disposal centre at Kg Bilit, building a similar one at Kg Sukau, and river cleaning awareness programme to educate the communities. 'We (KiTA) hope the Ministry will support our ongoing community-based environmental awareness programme in Kinabatangan for the long-term benefit of both the local community and eco-tourism development in the region. 'And we need a matching grant for the proposed project to ensure its successful implementation,' he said, adding that KiTA is a non-profit organisation. According to Lim, the original waste disposal centre at Kampung Bilit was built by KiTA in September 2015. He said this facility played a vital role in raising awareness among the local community on the importance of village and river cleanliness as well as environmental protection. 'However, after several years, the waste disposal centre there has deteriorated and is now negatively impacting the local environment and tourism appeal,' he lamented. 'We propose to build a new one close to the existing site, with regular garbage collection by the local authority.' Ringgit opens higher against us dollar amid tariff policy concerns

He said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.11 per cent to 98.60 points from 99.00 at Friday's close, supporting other currencies as well. 'The comments from Beijing and Washington signal frustration over unmet trade commitments. 'Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding Trump's proposed Section 899 'revenge tax' in the House-passed reconciliation bill and dovish expectations for the US Federal Reserve continue to weigh on the greenback,' he told Bernama. At the opening, the ringgit traded mixed against a basket of major currencies and ASEAN peers. It appreciated against the British pound to 5.7134/7574 from Friday's close of 5.7284/7385, but weakened versus the Japanese yen to 2.9567/9799 from 2.9531/9585, and slipped against the euro to 4.8270/8643 from 4.8169/8254.
