No urgency for Cabinet reshuffle, says PM

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) said there is no urgency to carry out a Cabinet reshuffle at this time. He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. Anwar said the Cabinet continues to operate as usual and that temporary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that they had submitted their leave applications and resignation letters, which will take effect on June 17 and July 4, respectively. 'In the next Cabinet meeting, I will ask (other) ministers to cover (the portfolios of the Economy Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry),' he said. At the same time, the prime minister said he has instructed the secretaries-general of both ministries to continue carrying out their responsibilities. 'All secretary-generals have been asked to continue (their duties), because we are in the midst of serious negotiations... Asean, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), China and the United States, including over (US President) Donald Trump's tariff proposals,' he added. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi were defeated in the 2025 PKR elections held last month. Rafizi failed to retain his position as PKR deputy president after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi lost in the contest for the vice-president post. Following their resignations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement that the Prime Minister had received letters from both ministers requesting leave and to step down from their Cabinet positions. Business couple pleads not guilty to RM3.6 million false claim charges

KOTA KINABALU: A husband-and-wife business duo have claimed trial to charges of abetting a company director in submitting false claims amounting to more than RM3.6 million to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR). Anita Mohamed, 54, and Ang Ka Fat @ Kenny, 57, pleaded not guilty to their respective charges when brought before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga on Thursday. Both face two separate charges each, as well as one joint charge, over the alleged offences. The charges were framed under Section 28(1)(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, read together with Section 18 of the same Act, and punishable under Section 24(2). Upon conviction, the provision carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and a fine of at least five times the value of the false particulars, or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The documents were allegedly submitted to an administrative assistant at the DIDR office between 2022 and 2023. AGC: No issue of Anwar being disqualified as PM, MP

In a statement today, the AGC said this was because the royal pardon granted by the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong stated that Anwar had been fully pardoned and regarded as a person who had never committed any offence. 'Any challenge to the election of an MP should be through an election petition, as provided for under Article 118 of the Federal Constitution, and must be filed within the time frame set out under Section 38 of the Election Offences Act 1954,' it said. The AGC was responding to a suit filed by former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P. Waytha Moorthy, who is seeking to nullify Anwar's election as Tambun MP and his appointment as Prime Minister. It said Waytha Moorthy's action was based on the argument that the pardon granted to Anwar did not include the annulment of his disqualification under Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution. 'The AGC respects the right of any individual to file an action in court. In this matter, the Court of Appeal, in the case of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim v Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz [2023] 2 MLJ 545, decided that the King has the power to grant a pardon in respect of a conviction and sentence,' it said. On Aug 12, Waytha Moorthy filed an originating summons in the High Court here seeking a declaration that Anwar's appointment as Prime Minister on Nov 24, 2022, was unconstitutional, null and void. This follows a royal pardon granted by the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which fully absolved Anwar of any past offences. The AGC stated that any challenge to an MP's election must be filed via an election petition under Article 118 of the Federal Constitution. The clarification comes in response to a lawsuit by former minister P. Waytha Moorthy, who sought to nullify Anwar's election as Tambun MP and his appointment as PM. Waytha Moorthy argued that Anwar's pardon did not remove his disqualification under Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution. The AGC emphasised that the Court of Appeal had already ruled in Anwar's favour, affirming the King's power to grant pardons.
