KPT to expand ‘Telaah' broadcast to foster reading interest, intellectual discussions
KUALA LUMPUR: 'Telaah', a discussion and analysis session of books and works through audio broadcasts, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) yesterday, will be expanded in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE). Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said he has discussed with the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, and the programme will be expanded to a wider audience, involving students, lecturers, teachers, and schoolchildren to foster a love for reading. ''Telaah' is an initiative borne by the Prime Minister, who is indeed known as a book lover and a leader with a scholarly spirit. In all his speeches, there will surely be quotes from prominent figures and important books that enliven discourse and enlighten the minds of the people. ''Telaah' is not just a programme, it is a movement to revive the interest in reading, the culture of book discussions, and intellectual discussions based on knowledge,' he said in a Facebook post today. The first episode of 'Telaah' last night featured the Prime Minister as a special guest, discussing four important works namely 'Kemiskinan Melayu dan Jalan Kepulihannya' by Za'ba, 'Jejak-Jejak di Pantai Zaman' (Prof Diraja Ungku Abdul Aziz), 'Islam dan Sejarah Kebudayaan Melayu' (Prof Diraja Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas), and 'Islam dan Melayu: Martabat Umat dan Daulat Rakyat' (Datuk Dr Siddiq Fadzil) from his personal library. To embrace the development of digital technology, Zambry said an online book review competition will also be held so that people from all corners of the country can participate. 'Our aspiration is clear: to create a nation that not only reads, but reads with understanding and understands with the spirit of building. 'I hope 'Telaah' becomes a platform to revive the culture of knowledge. From the highest leaders of the country to the grassroots of society, 'Telaah' belongs to everyone. Insya-Allah, we'll meet in the next episode of 'Telaah' after this,' he added. 'Telaah', initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), is a contemporary platform that supports the nation's grand aspiration to cultivate a discourse based on reading and transforming the passion for knowledge into a national practice. Airing once a week on an online platform, 'Telaah' brings together scholars, writers, and the general public in open discussions that foster a deeper understanding of various societal and civilisational issues, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI.

No urgency for Cabinet reshuffle, says PM

He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. Anwar said the Cabinet continues to operate as usual and that temporary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that they had submitted their leave applications and resignation letters, which will take effect on June 17 and July 4, respectively. 'In the next Cabinet meeting, I will ask (other) ministers to cover (the portfolios of the Economy Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry),' he said. At the same time, the prime minister said he has instructed the secretaries-general of both ministries to continue carrying out their responsibilities. 'All secretary-generals have been asked to continue (their duties), because we are in the midst of serious negotiations... Asean, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), China and the United States, including over (US President) Donald Trump's tariff proposals,' he added. Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi were defeated in the 2025 PKR elections held last month. Rafizi failed to retain his position as PKR deputy president after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi lost in the contest for the vice-president post. Following their resignations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement that the Prime Minister had received letters from both ministers requesting leave and to step down from their Cabinet positions. Anwar defends Tengku Zafrul's role in investment and trade portfolio, set to stay on as minister despite Umno exit
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz will remain with his portfolio despite quitting Umno to join PKR. He said Tengku Zafrul has performed well in his current role in the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, particularly in overseeing substantial investments involving various agencies. 'His ministerial duties remain unchanged,' he told reporters when met at Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 here. 'We want him to continue his work, especially in the investment portfolio. His contributions are still needed by the country.' Anwar's remark came amid calls from Umno for it to retain seven ministerial posts after Tengku Zafrul announced his is joining PKR. He also reiterated that PKR has not had any detailed discussion over Tengku Zafrul's application to joint. The PKR president also urged the public and media to avoid overthinking the move by the minister formerly from Umno. 'Yes, he has applied to join PKR, but we have not deliberated on it thoroughly. For now, let it be. 'There's no need for excessive interpretations that might be unhealthy,' he added. Anwar said the application would be reviewed with fairness, in consultation with the party's grassroots. Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he is confident Anwar would consider reinstating the allocation in line with the party's role in the unity government. This came after Tengku Zafrul said he has resigned from Umno and is vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief.

Books are a source of true knowledge, not social media, says Anwar
Anwar delivering his speech at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 on June 1. – Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is urging Malaysians to read more, lamenting a less-than-ideal reading culture in the country. "Reading has not yet become a culture in our country, and that to me is disheartening. When we speak of a Madani nation, it is one that is rooted in conviction and love for knowledge," he said. How can we claim to love knowledge if we only rely on speeches, opinions... sometimes filled with insults but not grounded in knowledge? "Reading just four lines or listening to two-minute rants on social media and forming conclusions, this world is challenging and it demands individuals with deep knowledge," he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 here on Sunday (June 1). Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Dr Hazami Jahari and PBAKL 2025 organising chairman Mohd Khair Ngadiron. The prime minister, however, expressed optimism that the reading culture could be cultivated, noting that the PBAKL 2025, which began on May 23, had received an encouraging response, recording a total of 1.8 million visitors. Citing the success of developed nations, Anwar said such countries advanced because their people possessed deep knowledge and understanding. "Look at developed countries – none have progressed while lacking knowledge," he said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that efforts to elevate Malaysia as a great nation must be anchored in building a knowledgeable society that values a reading culture. He said that in the pursuit of success, there remain political leaders, professionals, technocrats and intellectuals who overlook the development of culture. "In the next five or ten years, we want to elevate Malaysia as a great nation in our region. To do that, we must be prepared to compete, to work and to truly read. "Just look at the political and economic discourse in our country… it is not based on knowledge or reading. It is driven by sentiment, anger, hatred, judgment... even religion is turned into a platform (for political gain)," he said. The Prime Minister challenged students, influencers and parents to promote the strengthening of intellectual foundations to realise the goal of uplifting the nation's stature. PBAKL, themed 'Buku: Membaca, Memimpin' (Books: Read, Lead), concluded on Sunday, offering a wide variety of events and is regarded as one of the largest book fairs in Southeast Asia. – Bernama
