Baba Sehgal recalls Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman being against him singing Rukmani song in Roja: 'Rahman was just a bachcha then'

Rapper Baba Sehgal recently shared an interesting story. He said that Mani Ratnam and A.R. Rahman were against him singing 'Rukmani' for Roja. The music company insisted on Baba's involvement. Baba initially disliked the song's lyrics. He recorded it despite reservations. He believes his voice contributed significantly to the song's success. This was his only collaboration with AR Rahman. Before Roja became a musical milestone in Indian cinema, an unlikely collaboration was brewing behind the scenes—one that nearly didn't happen. In a surprising revelation, rapper Baba Sehgal has opened up about how director Mani Ratnam and a young AR Rahman were initially against him singing the iconic 'Rukmani' track in the film's Hindi version. Recalling the incident in a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Baba Sehgal shared that he was approached after performing a solo show in Chennai with a massive crowd of 50,000–60,000 people. An organiser introduced him to a director, who played the Tamil version of a Roja song. Confused at first, Baba said he didn't understand why he was being made to listen to it. He believes AR Rahman, then quite young, was also present during the meeting. Since Baba Sehgal was occupied with his concert, he asked the team to meet him later at his hotel. There, they requested his help in getting the music released. Baba connected them with a music company that was venturing into film music for the first time. The company agreed, but on the condition that Baba would sing at least one track. That track turned out to be part of the Hindi version of Roja, with Shweta Shetty as the female vocalist. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Home Efficient with This Plug-In elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Undo Baba Sehgal revealed that when he received the lyrics for 'Rukmani,' he found them distasteful and was taken aback by how vulgar they sounded. Despite his reservations, he went ahead and recorded the song, aware that the makers hadn't originally wanted him as the singer—they had preferred a classical artist. However, since the music company had made his involvement a condition, Rahman and the team had no choice. The song was recorded in just two takes. When an elderly female singer was brought in to record a specific line, Baba insisted that Shweta Shetty sing it instead. That track ended up being his first and only collaboration with AR Rahman, as language barriers prevented further projects. Reflecting on that time, he recalled Rahman being very young and relatively new to the industry. Baba Sehgal later learned that director Mani Ratnam had initially opposed the idea of him singing the song. However, he firmly believes that his voice played a key role in the track's popularity, crediting his contribution as a major reason behind its success.

Ektaa Kapoor slams Anurag Kashyap as 'so dumb' after his rant against Netflix and ‘saas-bahu' shows

In a clash that has stirred up Bollywood's OTT circles, two creative giants, Anurag Kashyap and Ektaa R Kapoor, have found themselves at ideological loggerheads over the future of Indian streaming content . What began as a sharp comment by Kashyap on Netflix 's evolving strategy has now snowballed into a larger debate about elitism, populism, and the cultural legacy of 'saas-bahu' television dramas. The Sacred Games director's biting remarks about Netflix's co-CEO Ted Sarandos and his jab at mainstream Indian content have prompted a fiery response from Kapoor, who defended mass entertainment with passion and a few pointed words of her own. The storm was triggered when Kashyap reposted a headline quoting Ted Sarandos, who, in a conversation with Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath, suggested that Sacred Games 'perhaps shouldn't have been Netflix's first Indian original.' Sarandos implied that a more populist show might have served the platform's debut in India better. Kashyap, clearly unimpressed, responded with scathing sarcasm. 'He should have started with Saas-Bahu, he would have done well,' he posted on Instagram. The director then launched a more direct attack on Sarandos, calling "tech guys" "dumb" in the area of storytelling. Ektaa Kapoor slams Sacred Games director Kashyap's pointed remarks didn't go unchallenged. Ektaa R Kapoor, often hailed as the queen of Indian television and a strong voice in the streaming industry, responded firmly without naming Kashyap directly. Kapoor criticised Kashyap's remarks, suggesting that his tone appeared self-congratulatory and condescending, as if trying to assert intellectual superiority. She highlighted the cultural significance of 'saas-bahu' serials, pointing to a well-regarded study from Chicago that recognized their role in empowering women through mainstream Indian media. She also accused artists like Kashyap of being classist in their attitudes, despite often advocating for inclusivity in their storytelling. Her message was not just a rebuttal but a reflection on the broader dynamics of creative hierarchy in India's entertainment industry. 'We must do away with this 'you can't sit with us, we are better' attitude for democracy and fair play!' she wrote, ending her post with a note of peace: 'Love and light to all.' Ektaa Kapoor and Netflix Interestingly, Kapoor's rebuke comes just days after Netflix announced a new creative collaboration with her production house, Balaji Telefilms, on the occasion of her birthday. 'Netflix and Ektaa Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms come together in a creative collaboration to craft compelling stories across formats,' the platform posted on June 7. Kapoor also called it her 'best gift ever.'

Sara Ali Khan's Metro In Dino Look Draws Comparisons To Saif Ali Khan's Humshakals Drag Avatar

Last Updated: Sara Ali Khan's Metro In Dino look draws funny comparisons to Saif Ali Khan's drag role in Humshakals. Fans say, "Saif's genes are too strong!" After her nostalgic onscreen reunion with ex-boyfriend Veer Pahariya in Sky Force, Sara Ali Khan is ready to shift gears with Metro In Dino—a romantic anthology that promises layered emotions, contemporary love stories, and a bold new look for Sara. In Anurag Basu's upcoming film, the actress appears opposite Aditya Roy Kapur in a never-seen-before avatar: short hair, full bangs, geek-chic glasses, and a soft, understated aesthetic that's a far cry from her usual glamorous screen presence. But while the chemistry between the lead pair has already made waves through the film's romantic tracks, it's Sara's transformation that has truly captured the internet's imagination. Initially, netizens were quick to compare her makeover to Kriti Sanon's look in Bhediya and Katrina Kaif's iconic fringe in Jagga Jasoos—compliments any actor would welcome. However, the comparisons didn't stop there. In an unexpected twist, some social media users started drawing parallels between Sara's new look and her father Saif Ali Khan—specifically his drag transformation in the 2014 comedy Humshakals. Fans and trolls alike have flooded Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) with reels, side-by-side collages, and cheeky commentary featuring Sara's look from Metro In Dino placed next to Saif's wig-and-makeup-clad avatar from Humshakals. The resemblance? Uncanny, if you ask the internet. One user joked, 'That's how almost all daughters look—dad versions but with frocks and makeup." Another quipped, '19-20 ka hi farq hai." Others couldn't get over the family resemblance, writing, 'Carbon copy," and 'Saif's genes are way too strong." A few fans even noted that Saif resembled Kareena Kapoor Khan more than Sara herself: 'Saif is looking more like Bebo!" one comment read. Another declared, 'Saif looks like a combo of Sara and Kareena!" It's worth noting that Humshakals, though panned by critics, featured a now-viral segment where Saif, Riteish Deshmukh, and Ram Kapoor dressed in women's clothing. In a throwback BTS video, Kareena had even called Saif's drag look 'beautiful." Despite the online banter, Sara's Metro In Dino character is being praised for breaking her on-screen mold. This is her first collaboration with filmmaker Anurag Basu, and the ensemble film also stars Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Konkona Sensharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, and Saswata Chatterjee. Slated to release on July 4, Metro In Dino is poised to be a heartfelt slice-of-life drama with multiple storylines interwoven through a city's emotional chaos.
