Government to introduce AI facial recognition at major railway stations to track sex offenders

The Union government has informed the Supreme Court that it plans to introduce artificial intelligence-based facial recognition systems at seven major railway stations to aid in combating crimes against women , according to a report by the Times of India.In addition to these stations, which include Mumbai CST and New Delhi, eight cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Lucknow — have already implemented safe city projects through local police and municipal bodies, according to the news report.In response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers' Association over the increasing number of crimes against women, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) submitted an affidavit outlining various measures. These include installing CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and automatic number plate recognition, smart street lighting, and the use of drones to monitor high-risk areas, the publication said.The MHA also informed the court that the number of offenders listed in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO) has now crossed 20 lakh. This database contains names, addresses, photographs, and fingerprint details of individuals involved in crimes such as rape, gangrape, eve teasing, stalking and child abuse. It is accessible to all police stations and law enforcement agencies via the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS).The ministry added that the Integrated Emergency Response Management System (IERMS) is now active at 499 out of 983 major railway stations, providing round-the-clock security for women. The Konkan Railway Network has already installed 740 CCTV cameras at 67 stations, and plans are in place to expand surveillance with AI-powered facial recognition systems at seven key stations.However, senior advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, representing the women lawyers' association, argued that more needs to be done. She pointed to National Crime Records Bureau data showing a rise in crimes against women from 58.8 per lakh in 2018 to 66.4 per lakh in 2022.In her rejoinder, Pavani said, 'In 2022, there were 23.66 lakh cases of crime against women pending trial, of which only 1.5 lakh were decided in 2022 and only 38,136 ended in conviction.'The association further stated, 'Introduction of technology-based projects like Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS), Crime Multi Agency Centre (Cr-MAC), NDSO, Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offenders (ITSSO), Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to improve and make the criminal justice system efficient are not making a big difference.'A bench led by Justice Surya Kant is expected to hear the matter on Monday.

I have gotten used to these kinds of comments, and that's the sad part. Unfortunately, I have become immune to it. Imagine the trauma women carry by facing constant abuse online. A couple of years ago, fans of two stars were targeting each other, and they commented badly about the children of one of the stars. I found it disgusting, and I put out the screenshots of those uncivilised messages on social media to expose these fans. The stars should have stepped in to bring some sense to their respective fans. Darshan should have said he doesn't like such behaviour from his fans. Maybe then, the Renukaswamy incident might not have happened. He (Renukaswamy) was your fan, and this is the kind of behaviour you have encouraged. What made you take a stand against Darshan in the Renukaswamy murder case? Most women cannot afford legal fees in such battles. They can't afford to put themselves out in public because they have a family to take care. They have confided this to me. Fortunately, I am in a position of privilege; I have been a former MP. I have been in politics, so I have the contacts and the support. I don't want to deny that. That said, if I don't use that privilege for something meaningful, I am letting down other women. Those clubs used to conduct blood donation camps and involve themselves in philanthropy. However, fan wars have become the norm now. You think these fans are faceless and can't go beyond their so-called bravado online, but they are actually capable of going on the roads and beating people who speak against their favourite stars.

Nimisha Priya case: Yemen cancels death sentence of Indian nurse, claims Grand Mufti's office
In a big relief for Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse who was facing the death penalty in Yemen, her death sentence has now been officially cancelled. This good news was shared by the office of Indian Grand Mufti Kanthapuram AP Abubakker Musliyar. 'The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was previously suspended, has now been completely cancelled,' read a statement from the Grand Mufti's office. This comes after her execution, which was originally scheduled to happen on July 16, was halted temporarily just a day earlier, after Grand Mufti AP Abubakker Muslaiyar intervened and requested Yemeni authorities to reconsider. This decision was reportedly made during a high-level meeting in Yemen's capital, Sanaa. India's Attorney General R Venkataramani, speaking in the Supreme Court, said that efforts are ongoing to bring Nimisha back home safely. The court, which is hearing a request for stronger diplomatic steps, has scheduled the next hearing for August 14. What is Nimisha Priya's issue? Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old trained nurse from Kerala, went to Yemen in search of work. In 2015, she teamed up with a local man, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to start a clinic, since foreigners aren't allowed to own businesses there on their own. Mahdi reportedly misused a wedding photo taken during a visit to India to falsely claim he was married to Nimisha. He took control of the clinic and began forcing her to hand over her monthly earnings. According to her family, he abused her in many ways, including physical torture, drugging her, and taking her passport so she couldn't leave Yemen. When Nimisha turned to the police for help, she was briefly jailed instead of being protected. Desperate to escape, she allegedly tried to sedate Mahdi to get her passport back. But the dose turned out to be too strong, and Mahdi died leading to her arrest and a murder conviction.
