
You don't have to almost die to be happy at work, but it helps
Singer-songwriter Aysanabee was snowshoeing across a frozen lake in remote northern Ontario over a decade ago, when the ice gave way beneath him, plunging him into frigid waters.
"I could like feel the icy water filling up my snow pants and I knew I couldn't swim with the snowshoes — and all these different things are running through my mind," said Aysanabee, who is Oji-Cree, Sucker Clan of the Sandy Lake First Nation.
"I just thought, 'Wow, this is it, this is it for me and I haven't done anything with my life," he told The Current's Matt Galloway.
Aysanabee is now an award-winning musician, but at the time he was 19 and working for a mining company, playing music in bars in his spare time. It was around -40C on that early January day, and the young man was alone, more than six hours outside Ear Falls, Ont.
But Aysanabee had managed to fall slightly forward as the ice broke, allowing him to sink an axe into the ice shelf. As he struggled to drag himself out, one swing of the axe at a time, he frantically bargained with "whoever was listening … a higher power or something."
"If I get out of this, I promise … I will do this thing, I'll go play music," he remembers pledging.
He eventually managed to pull himself back onto solid ground, where he started a small fire to warm up and dry off. On the long walk back to camp, he had time to reflect on how close he came to death — and what he wanted to do with this second chance.
"Then, three months later, I bought a one-way ticket to Toronto to go do music," he said.
At the University of Guelph, Jamie Gruman and his research team recently interviewed 14 people who suffered near-death experiences, examining the impact on their work and careers. Published in the Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion in April, their research showed that survivors gained new insights, from a greater interest in spirituality to a belief that everyone is born equal, and here for a reason.
"Specifically as a result of those things, the insights and the personal transformations, work often became much less important to people," said Gruman, a professor of organizational behaviour at Guelph University.
"They thought, 'Well, why am I doing this? Like, what's the point? Is this meaningful? Does it matter?'" he said.

In the years since he fell through the ice, Aysanabee has released two critically acclaimed albums. He's been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize and took home two awards at the 2024 Junos, including Songwriter of the Year.
Looking back at his younger self, he says he always knew he wanted to be a musician, but didn't know "how to do it." He credits what happened with giving him the courage to pursue that dream.
"I think that whole experience definitely made me realize how precious time is," he said.
"I don't want to waste any of it, you know, wondering, 'What if?'"
Workers 'lost interest' in money
Gruman said that what people want from their work boils down to three things: economic security, meaningful work that allows them to grow and develop, and high-quality relationships.
But for the study participants who had come close to death, that changed.
"They all completely lost interest in making money and any external measures of success," he said.
"They didn't want big houses and cars and boats. They didn't want to be the executive vice president. They didn't want to get rich."
By contrast, the desire for meaningful work and strong workplace relationships skyrocketed, he said. That led some participants to change jobs, or even completely change careers.
Others were able to find what they needed by rethinking how they approached their work, Gruman said, giving the example of a teacher who "didn't really like teaching."
After her near-death experience, "she considered herself now to be a teacher in the school of life," he said.
"Teaching math and science was just incidental to teaching students about the importance of treating people well and living well."
Like Aysanabee, a brush with death taught the participants a lesson about time.
"They decided, 'Look, you know, my time here is limited, so let me make a move. And do something that speaks to my soul,'" Gruman said.
Listen to your gut, says career coach
Career counsellor Stephanie Koonar says there are lots of reasons people can be dissatisfied with their work, but you don't necessarily need a life-or-death experience to make a change.
"A lot of it is about being in touch with your own gut instincts," said Koonar, Vancouver-based co-founder of PeerSpectives Consulting, which offers career coaching and leadership development.
"My husband calls it the toothbrush challenge: in the morning when you're brushing your teeth, are you excited to go to work?"
Koonar helps people dig into those feelings with the Japanese concept of ikigai, which involves asking yourself four questions:
What do I love?
What am I good at?
What does the world need?
What can I be paid for?
She said the responses can offer clues to what matters most to someone, but it doesn't always mean completely changing your career to get involved with something important to you.
"Maybe you're an accountant or maybe you do website development or social media but you could … seek out those organizations that are working on issues and challenges that you think are important and bring your skills and talents to them," she said.
She added that bosses and managers also have a role to play.
"Nowadays people don't want a boss; they want a coach," she said.
"That includes helping them course correct if they've made some mistakes … [but also] spotting their strengths and talents and then maybe giving them opportunities."
Ultimately, Koonar says that being happy every day at work might not be the goal.
"Happiness is fleeting and at the end of our lives we are looking for more meaning," she said.
"[That] might be bringing your talents and your strengths to a challenge. It may not even make you feel happy all the time … but it's rewarding because you're making a difference."
For researcher Gruman, the lesson is to focus on what matters in your work life, both in terms of your own well-being and the people you build work relationships with.

Hamilton non-profit marks 5 years of support for Black-owned businesses, hopes to make bigger impact
Social Sharing A non-profit organization that supports Black-owned businesses in the Hamilton area celebrates its fifth anniversary this week, and one of its leaders said the group wants to make an even bigger impact in Ontario and Canada. Ashleigh Montague, co-founder of Blk Owned, said while they started in Hamilton, where most of the businesses they support are located, they've also partnered with organizations in the Niagara Region. Montague said they are now ready to take Blk Owned even further. "When I think years from now I am seeing more of a national impact," Montague told CBC Hamilton. "Within the next three years, I see expanding geographically within Ontario, strengthening the reach that we have been able to foster over the last five years." Montague and her sisters — Alexandria Montague and Abygail Montague — co-founded Blk Owned on June 2, 2020 at a time when people around the world had taken to social media to post black squares after the resurgence of Black Lives Matter, and, specifically, the murder of George Floyd by white police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis. Since then, the organization created an Instagram page to showcase Black-owned businesses, launched, and has hosted markets, events, and workshops along with a Black-owned business directory that highlights and showcases businesses to the community. In 2022, Blk Owned launched a trailblazer program to help young Black entrepreneurs gain fundamental skills to help improve their business. They've had three cohorts of participants since. In all, they've supported hundreds of Black entrepreneurs, Montague said. 'Entrepreneurship is really lonely' Blk Owned has received funding from Toronto Pearson airport's Uplift Fund, as well as the Hamilton Community Foundation, Montague said, which has allowed them to launch the community platform and a hybrid version of the trailblazer program. Montague said the trailblazer program runs over a two-month period with online and in-person components. At the end of each cohort, participants receive an award and networking opportunities with more established businesses, with the other participants and with facilitators, Montague said. The in-person segment has been held at Sheridan College the past two cohorts, she added. "Because of our expansion of our program... we've had people connecting with businesses from the Brampton region, the Scarborough region, all the way through to London," she said. "With our work with the Southwestern Ontario Black Business Network, we've been able to stretch our reach all the way to Windsor." Gugu Mpofu is the owner of Oaesis Within, an organic body care and wellness company. She told CBC Hamilton that she was one of the first participants in the trailblazer program, adding that "they've really helped propel my business." "They had mentors who were part of the Hamilton Business Centre and I ended up joining their startup company plus program where I got a grant of $5,000," Mpofu said. "I've always had the support of Blk Owned, whether it's just through their programming, through their vendor markets, through their networking events, and also through them recommending me into spaces where I was able to have wholesales," she added. Mpofu, who also serves as community relationships co-ordinator at Blk Owned, said the organization is more than a support system. "Entrepreneurship is really lonely, very scary, and starting my business, I was worried about being the only Black or racialized person in the room, and just having Blk Owned it's like somebody to lean on," she said. "I can always go back to them if I'm feeling like I need a resource or if I feel like I need to join a market or if I need to network with other people … and that's something that's very precious." Anniversary celebration on June 5 Matheus Brasileiro, the founder and owner of vegan Brazilian bakery Sau Bake in the Hamilton Farmers' Market, has been in business for more than two years — first in Toronto, and then Hamilton. They said they learned about Blk Owned through a friend and participated in the trailblazer program last year, adding that it was "very helpful." Brasileiro said the support Blk Owned provides to small businesses is like "having someone that gets your back and understands the struggle that you go through as a Black business and small business." "You can't run a small business without a community, without having support, and one of the big reasons that I [got] to where I am right now with my little shop … was knowing that I had Blk Owned [to support me]," Brasileiro added. To mark the fifth anniversary of Blk Owned, Montague said the organization will be hosting a community celebration on June 5 at CoMotion On King, the co-working space out of which staff work. Montague said part of the free event will be "taking a look back at the last five years, but also taking a moment to reflect on where we're going to be going, moving forward from here." Later in the summer, on July 13, they will also be hosting a fundraiser and awards gala, called the Garden Party at the Royal Botanical Gardens, where Blk Owned will be honouring seven business owners in the Hamilton community, Montague said.

'It's frustrating and tiring': Another western Newfoundland daycare faces government delays
The Mi'kmaw Cultural Foundation in Stephenville is trying to open a registered child-care centre in a newly leased building, but it's stuck in a limbo period while waiting on provincial government approval to move forward with renovations. "It's frustrating and tiring. We are exhausted," Jeffrey Young, president and CEO of the foundation, told CBC News. Young applied for the child-care capacity initiative funding through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in early January. The funding program is designed for not-for-profit organizations, like the Mi'kmaw Cultural Foundation, to develop regulated child-care services where the need has been identified. He said there was a strong response from staff in the regional office, but he is stuck waiting for an approval from the minister's office for the next phase of the project. "It's been this ongoing … silence and no responses. We were initially told by one of the employees in the department to give it a six-month period for you guys to be open. That was in January. We are coming up on six months and we don't even have Phase 2 approved by the government," said Young. The approval would allow renovations, staffing and furniture purchases for the newly rented space, which already has multiple conference rooms, playrooms, two kitchens, bathrooms and access to the outdoors. Young said he has emailed and phoned the department's current and old ministers, and contacted opposition parties about his concerns. Just 24 kilometres away in St. George's, child-care operators face similar frustrations with governments this month, as they wait to open a registered daycare to accommodate an already long waitlist. Young says he is getting calls and emails every day from Stephenville residents wanting to know when the daycare might open. "We needed this daycare yesterday, not tomorrow. People are needing this service now. If the government don't speed things up, we are going to be losing people in our community, and maybe even our province," he said. "Because the services are not here. People want to go to work." While the Education and Early Childhood Development departments wouldn't do an interview with CBC News, Angela Sullivan, a communications director, sent an e-mailed statement. "The department carefully evaluates each submission to ensure a thorough and fair assessment process. The process considers overall project timelines, commitments to other child-care projects, and long-term viability of projects," Sullivan wrote. There was no mention of the specific southwest coast daycare delays. The Mi'kmaw Cultural Foundation was established over a decade ago to preserve and promote the Mi'kmaw culture in the province. Members work on community-based programming and focus mostly on youth. The goal is to open a registered Indigenous child-care centre and offer the service and employment opportunity within the Bay St. George area. "They are not recognizing the value of the programming we want to offer," said chairperson Ang Brockway. She says culturally relevant learning for children is always beneficial. "We want them to learn from authentic people in our communities who grew up on the land and know these things. We are really committed to offering that type of learning and environment." The Education Department says the government is focused on improving access to high-quality and affordable child care for families across the province, and it's trying to increase spaces to ensure families have access to child-care services. Brockway says her foundation is sick of broken promises and their application is very straightforward with no requests for new builds or massive renovation costs. "They have agreed to the reconciliation piece. They have put it out there that they are ready to do this work. But we are coming up against these barriers that make us think … are you really ready to do reconciliation work or are you relying on the people on the ground working to make everything happen?" Brockway said. "We could have [a] culturally relevant daycare, which is something our province is really lacking." As for Young, he is sitting and waiting for government officials to call so he can move on with the next stage. He says the organization has enough money reserved to rent the large building until the end of the summer.
