On Thursday, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners seemed to start the trade deadline season off with a bang. Arizona agreed to a deal that would send first baseman Josh Naylor to the Mariners in exchange for two talented pitching prospects.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Diamondbacks would continue to make moves following the Naylor trade. Rotman suggested the Diamondbacks would cut ties with Merrill Kelly in another trade deadline blockbuster.
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Merrill Kelly #29 of the Arizona Diamondbacks delivers a first inning pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona.
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Merrill Kelly #29 of the Arizona Diamondbacks delivers a first inning pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona."The right-hander has a 3.32 ERA in 21 starts and 122 innings of work, and if a start in which he allowed nine runs in 3.2 innings in early April were removed, his numbers would look even better," Rotman wrote. "Kelly has gone at least five innings in all but one of his starts, and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 14 of his 21 outings. Essentially, in two out of every three starts he makes, Kelly puts his team in a tremendous position to win, which is why, even while pitching on a Diamondbacks team bad enough to sell, Arizona has a winning record in his starts.
"Virtually every contender needs starting pitching help. Kelly might not be a true ace, but he can be a low-end No. 2 or a high-end No. 3 on a World Series team. He's underrated, and can help tilt a postseason series."
Kelly makes plenty of sense as a trade chip. He's on an expiring contract and enjoying a very solid season. The veteran seems unlikely to return to Arizona after the season, so a trade is the next reasonable step to take.
Nearly every contender could look to land Kelly because of his consistency this year. The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, and Chicago Cubs are just a handful of teams that will likely have interest in Kelly going forward.

Mariners' Josh Naylor sets insane Seattle stolen bases record in just 4 games after trade

No, you didn't misread that headline. Josh Naylor just set a Seattle Mariners stolen base record. Yeah, 250-pound first baseman Josh Naylor. In Naylor's first four games with the Mariners, he has stolen four bases. He didn't swipe one in his debut, then has gone 1-2-1 in the last three games. He's the first player in Seattle franchise history to steal four bases across his first four games with the team, according to the Mariners. Who knew the Mariners were getting such a speedster from the Diamondbacks in their trade? Naylor isn't a total shock as a base runner. He was 11-for-13 on steal attempts in Arizona this season, which was already a career-high for him in SBs. But to go four steals in four games right off the bat? That's quite the initiation. MORE: New York Mets on insane win streak thanks to Backyard Baseball legend Pablo Sanchez Smart base runners have gotten better and better at using that to steal second even if they aren't the fastest player around. Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has double-digit steals this season, too. Naylor is probably energized by the chance to join a winning ballclub and compete for a playoff spot, too. He's doing what it takes to contribute to the Mariners, and so far, that means taking off and swiping an extra base. Western Pa. native A.Q. Shipley named new radio analyst with Arizona Cardinals

Western Pennsylvania native A.Q. Shipley has been named a new radio analyst with the Arizona Cardinals. Shipley spent four of his eight NFL seasons playing for the Cardinals and now he'll be joining the organization as part of the broadcast team, replacing Ron Wolfley as the team's color analyst. Following his NFL playing career, Shipley has done some podcast work and has been making appearances on the Pat McAfee Show. "I love being able to talk football," Shipley said. "It's basically doing exactly what I like to do in terms of a coaching aspect except now it's in front of people from the media angle." Prior to playing in the NFL, Shipley was a multi-sport star at Moon Area High School and then played at Penn State University. Shipley was selected by his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2009 NFL Draft and bounced around a few practice squads until finally making the Indianapolis Colts' roster in 2021. Shipley moved back and forth between the Colts and the Baltimore Ravens for a few years before cementing his career in Arizona, where he served as the team's starting center for four straight seasons. After his playing career, Shipley said he thought he would be involved in coaching, but decided it wasn't a fit with a growing family.

Eugenio Suárez says X-rays were negative after he was hit on index finger by pitch against Tigers

DETROIT — Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez hopes he avoided major injury when he was hit in the right index finger by a pitch late in Monday night's 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Suárez, who is a candidate to be traded to a contender, was hit by a 95.6 mph sinker from Will Vest in the ninth inning. He immediately doubled over in pain and quickly left the field.
