Founded in 2023, Mistral is building advanced open-weight AI models that directly compete with Meta's Llama family. Its approach appeals to developers seeking transparency and customization in contrast to the closed nature of proprietary systems. With former Meta researchers such as Marie-Anne Lachaux, Thibaut Lavril, and Baptiste Rozière now working alongside Mistral's founders, the company may lead the next wave of open-source innovation, Business Insider reports. Taking over the position is Robert Fergus, a FAIR co-founder and former DeepMind scientist, marking a return to Meta following a five-year stint at Google's AI lab, Business Insider says. Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta's largest AI model to date, dubbed Behemoth, has been delayed due to internal concerns over performance and direction. Meanwhile, Business Insider notes that developers are increasingly turning to faster-evolving alternatives such as Qwen and DeepSeek following the Llama 4 investing billions into AI infrastructure, Meta still lacks a model explicitly focused on reasoning tasks, such as multi-step problem-solving or tool use. According to Business Insider, competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic are moving quickly to prioritize those capabilities, and without that strategic leap, Meta's influence over the open-source ecosystem may continue to decline. Of the 11 researchers who left Meta since the Llama paper's publication, most had been with the company for more than five years, according to LinkedIn profiles reviewed by Business Insider. Alphabet is taking full advantage of the opportunity with AI, bolstering its various products and services to better serve users and customers. But as of this writing on May 28, this top technology stock trades 16% below its high, which was reached on Feb. 4. Should you take advantage of the market's pessimism and buy the dip on Alphabet right now? With the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in recent years, investors have rightfully been concerned that Alphabet's crown jewel, Google Search, that represented 56% of sales in the first quarter, would be disrupted. That's because it's believed that users would turn more to AI when seeking out information on a variety of topics, pulling traffic away from Google Search. In turn, this could negatively impact advertising revenue. So far, it appears these fears are overblown. First off, Google Search still commands a whopping 90% of global market share when it comes to search engines. Additionally, Google Search saw revenue increase 10% year over year in Q1. And that $50.7 billion sales figure is up 28% from the same period three years ago. Lastly, it's worth pointing out that Alphabet isn't resting on its laurels. The company has clearly made AI a top priority. At its annual Google I/O developer conference in May, Alphabet did not disappoint. A notable 100 updates were announced, with new AI features coming across the board. Alphabet is already finding ways to make money from AI. "For AI Overviews, overall, we continue to see monetization at approximately the same rate," Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said on the Q1 2025 earnings call when comparing Overviews to traditional search. And when it comes to advertising customers, AI is helping them create more effective marketing campaigns that can increase return on spend and enhance targeting capabilities. In Q1, Alphabet generated $34.5 billion in net income. This puts it in an enviable position to keep plowing sizable financial resources into AI initiatives to bolster its competitive standing. Alphabet's wide economic moat is a key factor that highlights just how outstanding of a business this really is. The company benefits from powerful network effects within Search and YouTube. There are invaluable, intangible assets at play, like the Alphabet and Google brands, unrivaled technological know-how, and the ability to collect unbelievable amounts of data that can directly impact strategic decisions. There is also a cost advantage, particularly with Google Cloud. The platform requires huge fixed costs to build out the infrastructure. This explains why the segment was unprofitable for a long time. However, now that revenue has scaled up to $49 billion on an annualized run-rate in Q1, Google Cloud is boosting the bottom line. Operating income totaled $2.2 billion in the first three months of 2025. Google Cloud's customers also deal with high switching costs. Once they onboard and start to depend on Alphabet as its mission-critical IT partner, it makes sense why they would be inclined to stay put unless they want to cause potential operational disruptions. Investors will notice that Alphabet's valuation is too hard to ignore. Shares trade at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 19.2. This is a discount to the S&P 500 Index, which just doesn't seem warranted given the quality of this business. And of all the "Magnificent Seven" stocks, Alphabet is the cheapest. Finding such a great deal in the stock market can make investors think that they're overlooking something. However, it's best not to overanalyze the situation. Alphabet is a smart buy while on the dip. The ongoing fall-out of the cyber attack on Marks and Spencer — five weeks after the attack it looks like the U.K. retailer will take a £300 million (£403 million) hit to operating profits, while CEO Stuart Machin faces losing a substantial proportion of his pay — is yet another example of the disruption that such action can cause. While speculation continues about who exactly was behind it, and similar ones on other groups, it is a reminder of how vulnerable even the largest organisations are to hacking. Coming at a time of great political and economic uncertainty, the last thing already over-stretched executives need is another issue to keep them awake at night. But the fact remains that the more we all rely on technology the greater the risk of it turning around to hurt us. Moreover, such is the pervasiveness of that reliance, abandoning technology in search of total security is just not an option. Organizations just have to learn to live with it and to create systems that minimize the risk of successful attacks in the first place and then isolate the incursions so that they do not take down the whole enterprise. One of the reasons that these attacks receive so much attention is that they almost invariably involve breaches of customer information. This is not only understandably worrying for the customers but can also have a serious effect on the organization's reputation. Some idea of how difficult it is to deal with a threat that is both ever-present and ever-changing is conveyed in research published earlier this month by SurveyMonkey, the platform for surveys and forms. While 95% of U.K. businesses said they understood and met all requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation, more than half admitted to experiencing data-related issues since the regulation was introduced seven years ago. Of these British businesses, 16% had faced the consequences of a GDPR-related fine or penalty and 18% had experienced an official warning or investigation by a data protection authority. In an interview, Eric Johnson, SurveyMonkey's CEO, accepted that the introduction of the regulation had shaken the technology industry and that the rules could be expensive to adhere to and pose a challenge to how things were done. But he added that his company regarded compliance as a cost of doing business, and urged companies to adopt best practice. SurveyMonkey claims to have had a strong security and privacy program for some time, but it has responded to customers' desire for more transparency by launching the Trust Center as a one-stop hub offering guidance, resources and security assurances for businesses dealing with the difficulty of keeping abreast of legislation and customer expectations. One particular issue arises from technology constantly both doing more and posing more of a threat. As a result, businesses could not set up a program and then forget about it, said Johnson. While pointing out that the majority of U.K. businesses were concerned about using AI, he added that there was an opportunity to 'fight fire with fire' by using the capability of AI to help with the detection of risks. In the end, though, it appears to come down to vigilance and trust. Indeed, 92% of the U.K. businesses questioned by SurveyMonkey said that adhering to GDPR and data privacy laws had given them a competitive edge by strengthening customer trust, with 85% confident that their clients fully trusted their data privacy practices. Moreover, they were working hard to vet third-party vendors. Although 91% of businesses felt confident in their service providers' handling of data, 89% insisted on clear proof of compliance and security before partnering and 78% had cut ties with vendors over concerns about GDPR or data security.
